When I used to move with the embassy crowd, every time this topic turned up in the news, they brought it up as to why Europeans have an ongoing mistrust of America. They express disbelief that leaders, adults, can expect to restrict another adult's choice of their personal beliefs, and how can these leaders expect to be taken seriously in the world.
I never had an answer for them.
Them seemed driven, compelled to express these thoughts and were astounded that adults would think like this. There are different world views.
What's with Mississippi!?

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.
.
Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.
.
, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

Re: What's with Mississippi!?
Appears to have been denied.
The governor came out against it.
The extremism of the pro-lifers has been exposed, and it scares the fuck out of most people that oppose abortion in the state, so it was rejected.
They vow to continue the fight, wishing for a world like some of south america, where women suffering complications from abortion are allowed to die, and the Church glories in the blood.
By the way, do hospitals in your state do abortions?
Are they allowed to refuse?
Not so different from Mississippi really, is it?

They have a valid point.Canoe wrote:When I used to move with the embassy crowd, every time this topic turned up in the news, they brought it up as to why Europeans have an ongoing mistrust of America. i wonder how many in the anti-democracy (pro-life) campaign understand that many see it as a tipping point for confirming loss of control of the country.
The campaign is clearly about fascism over democracy.
I can't help but wonder the reaction of "pro-lifers" to a shooting war with real deaths?
I see them as no different than the narco-corporations edging ever closer to controlling Mexico.

On the lighter side - if this law passes can a woman who is pregnant drive in the HOV lane?
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.
Re: What's with Mississippi!?
Definitely yes.
However, every fertility clinic in the state will flee.
I think 'life' as defined in the extremest sense, begins with the possibility of life, with two aroused and fertile people.
Not having sex would therefore be abortion.
(This follows the church's old arguments.)
Just as sensible as every bit of fluff and nonsense put forth.

I believe that you can't defeat evil by adopting it's topics. So, when I really get riled up because of some inflammatory rhetoric that opposes views that I have, I try hard not to get into hyperbolic personal attacks.gyre wrote: i wonder how many in the anti-democracy (pro-life) campaign understand that many see it as a tipping point for confirming loss of control of the country.

The debate about abortion is about when you believe genetic materials develop into a human being. It's not about fascism or democracy. People can honestly believe that fetuses deserve rights without being similar to "narco-corporations". Fuck, I even think the term "narco-corporation" is somewhat misguided. It's very clear to me that "pro-right-to-life" people are allowed to have varied views on deaths from war, euthanasia, or capitol punishment.
If your criticism of your opponent is so easily dismissed because of it's obvious ignorance of your opponents general principles, it's not going to serve much purpose except to inflame people into having an even less reasonable conversation. In my opinion, it hurts the pro-choice movement when people make statements like the above.

Well, I know that this is an older thread, but I thought it was time to bring it back up again. Why, you ask? Wasn't it defeated by a majority vote and it's over with now? Excellent questions! Unfortunately, that would make total sense, but seeing as how we're talking about Mississippi, that's not the case... http://www.wapt.com/politics/30200218/detail.html
Long story short, although it was defeated, the Personhood USA people are trying to get it passed as a bill through our state legislature. ...and considering that our now governor, Phil Bryant, even went so far as to compare the issue to the Holocaust and the Jews of Nazi Germany “being marched into the oven,” because of “the people who were in charge of the government at that time.” He described the ballot measure as “a battle of good or evil,” and warned, “the evil dark side that exists in this world is taking hold. And they’re saying, what we want you to be able to do is continue to extinguish innocent life. You see, if we could do that, Satan wins.” (according to http://www.salon.com/2011/11/08/personh ... _of_truth/) Oh...and he, Govenor Bryant, is the co-chair of the Personhood group.
So, what does that say for us? ........yeah, I dunno either, but it's shitty.
