I like the annex. :coffee: :coffee: I'm trying to make some Swiss cardamom holiday bread today. I'll bring it in, if I have any success. Even if it comes out flat, it might be good to dunk in some hot mug of fruity spiced bev. Glug, or wassail.

Cardamom, to be honest I haven’t had any in my pantry for years. I saw this recipe and wondered why not. If you like black tea, a little cardamom and cloves is a nice flavor with some milk and sugar. I just put some in my yams and apple casserole to take as a side dish for dinner Sunday. I’ll be over the novelty soon, but it’s in the pumpkin pie spice family to me… nutmeg cloves cinnamon etc. I made some braided wreaths of the Swiss cardamom bread, and some Czech Houska, a braided bread loaf with lemon zest and a little nutmeg. I asked Misa about it, and she said Houska is normally the size of a palm (I took that to mean “hand”?) more like a roll. Both are sweetish, like panettone, but not “cake.” I enjoyed making these. I’ll leave some on the bar buffet. :coffee:

Remember, though, that the underwear is for two legs, one in each hole, if you get confused, you'll only be able to wear one sock.

Home in good weather today. It was sunny and warm for a nice creek side walk on the holiday day. I got a pair of socks, chocolate, and a I.o.u. for something wonderful and handmade. lots of good food, no complaints. I got to spend time with my sister who I haven’t seen in 4 years.

Quiet Christmas here, pretty sure Santa passed the house.lol

Looking forward to rain the next couple of days, bring the temp down.
Cheers to those who had an empty chair at the table this holiday season. Memories will keep the spirit alive.

One day, I'm going to get to meet some of you, I've been burning since 2000.

I see Adam and Sadie on the regular, they both live (in separate homes) within about a 1/2-1 mile from me 😃. My oldest is in Maryland but we phone each other weekly. Xmas was really just another day. We celebrate all together, for those of us who can, on thanksgiving.

Well, :coffee: I thought he was guy with an unpredictable meanness, but the couch had an awesome webpage about how to make stuff for ttitd. https://sites.google.com/site/potatotrap/bluetarp

I miss looking stuff up on the web and finding these human generated encyclopedias of links, without ads. I think we were a better community when we enjoyed sharing how to do it, and how to make it.

indeed a toast to Bob!!! Skal!
we had an interesting friendship, though never met in person, we'd PM at times about subjects and personalities here and on other groups and pages. We didn't always agree, but in a one on one, we had respect and shared a sense of humor at times.
Yes, Elorrum, we were a better group, back then, for your stated reasons, and others. Sad to see it gone.

*shuffles in, grabs MOC (Mug Of Contemplation), turns tap on ENECM*
3 am taps me on the forehead: "hey, whatcha doin? Why, did you not check the float level on the rototiller carb before reinstalling?"

me: I'm sleeping

3:15 am: "no, no you're not. How are you going to get the stripped exhaust manifold bolt out?"
me: I'm tired, leave me alone. rain on the roof is soothing.

3:45: Is it better to own a house, a condo, or rent? and why? I mean, taxes, maintenance, insurance all play a part
me: so does privacy, quiet, no close neighbors, easy living, no maintenance, no landscaping, going back to sleep

4 am: So, you're saying you should have fixed the Ford, instead of letting them total it? New truck is nice, but not the same. Check engine lights are a pain, but so is the CPS in a 7.3L Ford diesel

me: yeah, tough one, shoulda, woulda.........I need to go back to sleep

4:30 am: "so you're saying, you'd be happier had you sold your property and gotten out of PRC?

*door squeaks open, new participant strolls in*
Bladder: time to get up
me: ok....

Brain on overdrive when you're tryin to sleep. ugh

But I do know the easiest way to get the manifold bolt out if the block isn't aluminum.

Heat up the stub with a cuttin torch and blow the slag out.

I've done this many times and even rented the torch rather than fight that bolt.

New bolt goes right in.

Don't know if you can do this with the manifold on the engine, as the hole may be to deep.

What is it about 4 am?
Eyes open, here it comes…
Adrenal gland tap is open
Me: really, we’re doing this?
Body: run! Run now! Doom and death right now!
Me: no, we know that is false, deep breaths. Remember money in bank, food in house, gas in car, we are ok.
Body, and hindbrain: NO! it’s happening now! Doom!
Me: ok, do the breathing. In count 4. Hold for count of seven. Exhale… slowly, count of 8. Keep it up. Go back to sleep, see you in a couple hours.

it's a cast iron head.....but I'm not following: when you say "heat it with a cutting torch", I take that to mean just heat it. but, you say "blow the slag out", which sort of indicated cutting it? But if you cut the head off, nothing to grab hold of? Or am I, again, being dense?

The bolt is still in the head, holding the exhaust manifold on. Small engine, on my rototiller, so it was a #1 phillips head drive, which someone, at some time, stripped... 1/4" threaded body.

I’ve invested in screw extractors in the past, maybe cheap versions, which promptly broke. Can you grind a slot, or grind wrenchable flat edges on a larger rounded top screw? I’m seeing rubber band hacks, but the torque on an engine head would probably laugh at this. Drill it out?

If the screw isn't recessed, can you cut it off?

Then pull the other screw and pull the manifold off the stubb.

Vice grips and penetrating oil to work the stubb out.

Otherwise blow the screw out with the torch.

Use a little finesse and the screw will melt before the block is affected.

It will leave the hole clean enough to put the new screw right in.
