Reproduction factor (r) of 1.2 does not say:

more like

Seems to me that many burners may be saying to themselves, "They canceled Burning Man this year. What are we going to do? I miss Burning Man!"
Now who is "they"?
Maybe many of these people are consumers of the Burning Man event, like the local state fair or something.
On the other hand, many of us are saying "I'm going to continue to be a burner, no matter what".
How many burners will continue with the ten principles (or at least some of them!)?
A year without Burning Man (and frankly without Larry) is a beautiful test of who has always been a spectator and who has always been a participant.

Spot on cousin!

‘Xcept for one thing ...

I drank the koolaid long before 2004 and the silly Larry prose on the principles...

My default response to anything is “fuck you” followed by politely picking my nose and holding interesting conversations.

2021 will be one of the better BM years, just like 2020 was.

Shit, I need two different burn permits for that, and I gotta call the damn burn line to make sure the air quality board is kind enough to to let me light a match.

The Ten Principles have always been a joke. Even the Org itself didn’t abide by them.

If BRC happens this year face to face, it seems like all the outside services people would have to be tested or vaccinated. This might be a good year to rethink or shrink outside services.

Will be interesting to track Everywhen permit status - see if they get it and when since their schedule is 1 month before BM

also interesting, that they say they are posting "covid safety stuff" for "the authority types".....so does that imply that were there not "authority types", there would be no, or less, "covid safety" protocols?
Seems ironic they'd try to blame someone else for making people be safe from the Rona...

Yes it’s odd for sure. I’m also wondering about all the infrastructure needed and people to man things such as GPE, ice sales (?),med tent, etc. I believe the population they’re going for is 25k, which is a pretty big #, their first time out the gate. I heard the rangers will be called “mustachios”

I wish them well but I’m also going to be making up some popcorn. Want some?

How are Playa conditions this year? Isn't is still kind of muddy up through late spring?

It looks interesting but yeah, 25K for a first go? That's seems pretty ballsy (especially with the plague). I like the idea of an alternative event but I'd prefer a different location if there is going to be one. If it's a success I'd consider going the 2nd year just for something new (but I'm jaded).

N NV got some good snow the last couple days, not sure how much the playa got. Otherwise just like the rest of the West, it’s another drought year so far..

not having read every post in this thread, excuse me if I re-state:
Of places, the playa might be best for Rona safety? I mean, hot, dry, alkalai, lots of UV and breezes...
Not saying anything about personal protocols and such, but if indeed an event were held, that would probably be about the best place, no?
Of course any indoor/sheltered occupancy would change things, as well as physical contact/sharing fluids/food and drink.

Someone has to definitively prove the blue-splash kills The Rona on contact, and then triple the pumping budget for the JOTS.

And don’t pump it out at the garlic farms either!

You know, since there's more than one variant of the virus, I suspect that it might matter WHICH inoculation you get to be "safe"

Twenty years ago I was told that this kind of pandemic couldn't happen while discussing "The Andromeda Strain" with a University of Missouri virologist. Ten years later we both heard of the mutation that had occurred with Ebola potentially making it airborne, which changed both our minds on the possibilities of this occurring.

Today with COVID anything seems to be happening. Will it ever be somewhat safe?? I'm going to wait it out in 2021.

Guess what.
The planet was not engineered as a support system for humans. We are every bit as random as any virus or dinosaur, and equally subject to the forces of nature including extinction.

Also, there are over 7 Billion of us now, which is 6 Billion too many.

Have a nice day.

Elliot, I knew that. Something or another has fucked with living things a bunch times on this planet, the two big nasties being the mass extinctions at the end of the Permian and at the end of the Cretaceous. If it weren't for the human ability to inadvisably change our environment in the short term leading to devastating consequences in the long term, we'd still be fighting off the remnants of the short- faced cave bear population competing for living space or getting picked off by various toothed cats, trampled by elephants or water buffalo, poisoned by any variety of neurotoxic snakes, or our young getting swallowed whole by boas. AND, I'm not even including malaria, yellow fever, typhus, plague, hanta, ebola, or any variety of pathogenic microbes out there. We are a fragile species to be sure.

you have a nice day, too! :D

I use the line "The planet is not engineered as a support system for humans" quite often here in Lake County, CA, where our local water supply -- Clear Lake, which is bright green with perfectly natural algae much of the year -- is also a natural habitat of cyanobacteria, which generates cyanotoxins -- which are among the most toxic substances known to humanity. The lake is actually officially posted toxic -- do not touch the water, do not let your dog drink.
(Dogs have indeed died.)

I just kind'a figure people can benefit from keeping the big picture in mind.
And I have been wrong before.
