There seems to be absolutely no professionalism at all whenit comes to anything IT and Burningman, be it ticket sales online, this forum, or anything else I have ever experienced having to do with BMORG and IT. Unusual for an organization with a $16 million budget.
There should have been regular updates to all end users keeping them apprised of the situation, and it appears that the mods are not even kept in the loop.
We update our clients hourly on anything that might effect their service, and so does every other tech company I have ever worked with.
Pathetic, really. Even for volunteers.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

From an IT Manager's perspective this is a fucked up upgrade that has already failed due to a serious lack of end user communication. If the people doing this upgrade were in Nevada and worked for me I would be preparing write up forms and most likely a box with a handy flash drive containing instructions on how to file for unemployment benefits with Nevada Workforce. In our market I would find replacements and have interviews lined up in 30 min or less.
Seriously, there is no excuse for what we're seeing here. After doing this sort of thing for almost 2 decades now, it's quite clear this rollout is seriously fucked up.
It's ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION and TRANSPARENCY. It doesn't matter how fucked up it gets to deploy this thing...someone has to fucking communicate.
And don't spew the volunteer bullshit either. Volunteers can follow best practices and industry standards and roll out upgrades correctly with minimum fuss...I've been there, done it, and will do so again. I look forward to hearing someone explain to this community why it was handled so badly. And yes, an explanation is certainly due. And while AntiM is awesome, sending her out to do the explaining ain't gonna get it done either.

Delays, problems and issues are to be expected when doing an upgrade like this. What's not to be expected is the total lack of communications and respect for this community by not letting us know what's going on. I don't think these people are volunteers. This organization is a real business, with real people and real payroll checks. Some incompetent IT slob needs to have his ass booted out the door.
There is no excuse for inconsideration here! Someone needs to wake Larry and let him know what's going on with his organization.

Get a grip on yourselves. All of you besides Jkisha, I mean.
How often have any of the techs communicated *anything* on the eplaya in the last eight years?
Maybe the brief brownout here yesterday afternoon in the heat wave delayed things. Maybe they're mourning Ryan Dunn's death. Maybe they're arguing about khaki versus olive drab.
Maybe you lusers should check your entitlement issues.

Are you sure you didn't mean to say "undeserved sense of self-entitlement issues"?Bob wrote:Maybe you lusers should check your entitlement issues.
It's way more insulting. Just saying. . . .
I do find it funny that first people were complaining that "the world is gonna end." and then "the world didn't end on time." It just proves that people on this board like to complain about anyeverything.
May Shai-Hulud clear the path for you.

I strongly disagree. This is a community with thousands of hours of time invested into it. It's not just some simple online forum. It's an emotional minefield...that can't be changed.tiredofbeingnice wrote:Wow it is actually hillarious that anyone would give half a shit about this.
"Total lack of communication" - LOL. No one owes you any communication whatsoever. Seriously. Eat some mud.
Taking it a bit further, if you run any kind of an IT shop there's certain expectations that come along with it...and a key one is you communicate with your customers. This upgrade represents the chance to turn over a new leaf so to speak, to learn from the past and show that real change is on the way. Yet here we sit...same old crap, same old way of doing business. Yeah, we've got the right to bitch.
Bob, with your engineering background you of all people should be aware of the value of communicating changes to the people you're technically working for.
I sit here thinking the IT team is missing a golden opportunity...and I have no problem telling them as much.

And I should take it that you find it hilarious that we would be expected to follow any of the BM principles? Or to even worry about mooping up after ourselves on the playa this year?
People tend to give back what they get. So since you don't seem to feel anyone owes us any communication whatsoever; I then don't seem to feel I need to follow any of the ten principles including mooping. Hey, I paid for my ticket, I'll just go ahead and do as I please. To hell with anyone else.
I'll just spend my time making a mess as I am eating mud.
Attitude is everything my friend.
Now fuck off and crawl under a rock you idiot.
I'm tired of being nice too!

man, cant win for nothin
HEY!? i worked the org and this place over it hard for quite a while, dork and i gave far more feedback from direct personal involvement more than anyone in the history of this place! and when we didnt, it was only because we couldnt from the org side.Bob wrote:How often have any of the techs communicated *anything* on the eplaya in the last eight years?

this is nothing. its minor bitching to what i had to put up with from people here, especially during those auto-spammer months. entitlement issues have abounded here for years. not that they dont have a point though about the lack of communications, but its not the mod's fault. in fact the mods dont want much to do with it because of things like this.Maybe you lusers should check your entitlement issues.

great way to show you care about them.
Holding out on information is to ePlaya what 'Private party art cars' are to the real playa.

mods are not really doormen to a private party. most of the tech stuff has to go through, or come from people on the org tech team who have their own internal communications and volunteering issues to deal with.knowmad wrote:Holding out on information is to ePlaya what 'Private party art cars' are to the real playa.
mods tell you what they are told in the absence of cat herders. so go volunteer for a manager position thats in-between the community and a few different org groups, and you will see and learn what it takes to get things done.

There is a strange, inherant cockiness from nearly every IT guy that I've done business with. They speak cripticly and down to people with a bizarre knowing arrogance, based on a printed certificate hanging in their cubicle.
I have mastered the art of stroking the egos of these trekkie/geek/nerds, and just love to watch them puff up with pride when they hit the right buttons.
I'm sure that's not the case here, but I am just saying that's what I've seen other places.
