MSJ, nice to see you. I agree it’s a new burn, a changing style. I wonder if it isn’t like the blind guys describing an elephant, and I got stuck hearing the giant generators for air conditioned shift pods, and feeling ebike crashes, and plug and plays. I’m hopeful that there is much that remains awesome and mind blowingly fun.

hey bar. I joined an led fb forum to see if I could get away from the newcomers asking how to take care of themselves, right above posts answering it all, over and over. They are not asking how to make diddly squat, unless it involves a power system, or an air-conditioner. I wanted some interesting ideas, to see what people were making and designing. The LED emphasis, I figured was in my wheelhouse for low voltage simple wiring. On a cursory glance at some comments, I knew a whole lot of people already there. A little burner hideout. I wish they'd come back over here. We have an index!

yeah, little "real old time burner" hangouts... sigh.
I think the monotonous political and social posts here drove many away, along with the lack of the possibility for polite disagreements. Bullying and megalomania are just no fun.
Also the existence of so many media options for communication. Way back when social media was not so big or varied, people came here for shared interest, advice, and spirited (mostly respectful if not intense) conversation.
Sigh, too bad, IMHO.

Good points, ygmir. The information on social media is so poor. I’m seeing the strategy, people are admitting that it is simply their intent to create a cloud of information for themselves, even if it is stuff they already know, by NOT asking specific questions. Then they sift through that because it’s smaller than the entire internet, clean of ads perhaps. Bad information is swallowed and regurgitated by people who don’t even know what they are saying. (My favorite: “you’ll need a marine battery.”) I wonder if they know the joy of a good reference book.

Then It’s salvo after salvo, not really discussion. We don’t even acknowledge we are speaking to each other. I don’t think it’s a subject problem, it is a style problem. I admit I get caught up in it. Speaking, shouting, into what seems to be an uncaring void, I substitute friction for connection. It’s not a good feeling. Perhaps using a name if I’m answering somebody would improve my tone: “Yes, I see you, tell me more.” I also miss the utility of easily posting pictures here, our collective sense of humor was a lot more evident, and our discourse much friendlier with laughter.

I hope everyones prep (whomever is going) is going well!! I recall the days of panic about now, since I'd have normally been leaving this Thursday for the playa, and be there a little over 2 weeks....
I'm glad to see the MnG being hosted and looks like it might be a good turn out!! Many of them were so much fun!!!

Nice photos ygmir, so familiar and a happy time.

I decided to dip into the portion of burning man that is available to me all year long… make stuff! If I divided my all year devotion to burning man from the past, and remove the two or three weeks of event, pack, and unpack, I still have a good chunk of time and activities that I did really enjoy. I don’t have to pack or unpack, go up and down stairs with a cooler and gallons of water and EVERYTHING.

One toolbox stereo completed, a set of powered drive in speakers in progress. It’s a little something something, without the payoff of showing it off on playa, but it’s going to be clean for a while.

Pack wisely, ticket wallet keys.
