Whether pounding a nail or driving a screw, pilot holes can save much grief. If there is any question about splintering the wood, bending the nail or fucking the hole,,,, drill it!

Yeah, but I have taken to nailing the screw in just a little bit, to obtain a starter hole - especially when drilling holes into painted wood with a hand drill. Keeps the drill from wandering.
