Just got an email that broke my heart into tiny pieces and confirmed I will not be moving to San Fran as planned next year. This sucks. I feel really betrayed and gullible right now. I just want to curl up in a ball and cry.

Thanks, gyre...that was me, as if you didn't know already. It happened on my way back from the playa in '08. The whole episode changed my life forever, because I found out that there is a time and place in the world to make your actions count towards standing up and being part of a community. There were no fire vehicles there for another 10 minutes, since it happened on a rural interstate. It took the highway patrol 45 minutes to get there. Kicking the windshield out was easy since it was already toast from the accident - safety glass 'crazes' and forms a spiderweb of fragmentsheld together sometimes by plastic inserted between two layers of glass. True, I did step into a dangerous situation. But I planned for success...my buddy 'ironic' stood with me and held my fire extinguisher nozzle pointed at me and ready to discharge in case it was needed. I got him out, and the cab of the truck went up in flames three minutes later. The fire department got there shortly after that.

What do we do when there's no help for someone who needs it, and government seems unable (or is due to some time or legislative constraint) is unable to provide it? The answer for me was to step in where I could do the most good. I got the idea from Burners Without Borders. They did it after hurricane Katrina.

My sweet doggie (Shaffordshire Terrier) has partially torn her ACL. Vet says surgery is inevitable... Fuck - it'll cost $1600-2200! Who has that kind of money just laying around?!? Not me!
