Oh yes!! It's been uber quiet!!
I actually have cereal and milk last longer than 2 days!!
I don't have to cook an entire flock of chickens, I can have just a leg or both!!
I don't have to cook an entire cow, Just A steak!!
All my tools will be put away nicely, where I can find them, and not in the flower bed or the pool!!
The list goes on............. I am so happy!!

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
Just came home from a family wedding on the West coast, on a small island off of Vancouver Island. The place had a "free store"! It reminded me so much of BRC and the boutiques people set up there. It was like a huge self-sustaining thrift shop, but everything free for the taking if you wanted/needed it. Mr. Fufa found a pair of shorts exactly his size, after he left his at home and the weather was sweltering. The place is run entirely off of donations, and sometimes they have so much stuff they need to forward the extra to the Salvation Army. I wish these places were more common.
The odd thing was (and a good thing too) that even though we could have walked off with armfuls of stuff...we didn't. A pair of shorts, 2 gorgeous sarongs, a shrink wrapped never been opened Windows 3.1 OS pack and a book on bracelet making between 4 people. We felt bad about taking something just because we could. We truly only took what we really wanted and would have a use for. It was amazing.

in a strange (or not) way, Fufa, that sort of brings a tear to my eye.........
what a great thing! Thanks so much for sharing it.
yeah, it would be great if that could exist elsewhere, without people getting greedy and stripping the place in 10 minutes.

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
I suspect that Fufa was visiting a small community where people know each other, and have a certain moral pull on each other. People act better because they know who they are ripping off, or who will have to clean their messes, and people who do get out of line aren't likely to be able to hid it for long. There used to be something similar in Albany Village, which was married grad student housing at University of California in Berkeley. I had a friend who lived there 25 years ago. And it was small, interconnected, maybe everyone had children. There were a lot of children, at any rate, and a lot of mutual baby-sitting. Even though it was in the middle of a conurbation of some millions, there was enough mutual assistance to give it a very different feel.

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
Oh yes, it is an island with a very small population, but also a tourist hot spot. The population triples each summer. Apparently they get a big chunk of donations from the Americans with summer homes that clean out their properties every spring and buy new stuff. So this place does surprisingly well for a place where most people there are visitors. We actually felt a little guilty taking stuff without leaving anything in return, so Mr. Fufa made a cash donation.

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
What is happy? She's been my mother-in-law since April, 1974 and I just met her for the first time two weeks ago. My 30 year old son finally met his 94 year old grandmother. Oh, yes we were happy. Still happy. She looked at my palm and said "you're a good man, but you'll never have money." She looked at my son's palm and said "much better! take care of your father."

Sounds like Sointula, BC, on Markom(?) Island near port McNiell. part of a group/network of community enclaves that stretched all through out Puget Sound; in Canada and Washington state, during the height of the Union Wars these were Havens for syndicated-unionist and is how my state became known as "the Soviet of Washington."Fufa wrote:Just came home from a family wedding on the West coast, on a small island off of Vancouver Island. ...

Actually it was Hornby Island. Denman Island beside it apparently also has a free store.knowmad wrote:Sounds like Sointula, BC, on Malcolm Island near port McNiell. part of a group/network of community enclaves that stretched all through out Puget Sound; in Canada and Washington state, during the height of the Union Wars these were Havens for syndicated-unionist and is how my state became known as "the Soviet of Washington."Fufa wrote:Just came home from a family wedding on the West coast, on a small island off of Vancouver Island. ...

Though funny you mention Sointula. My family is from Port McNeill! I know the area well, though never actually been to Sointula. Always got off the ferry the stop before on Cormorant Island where my grandfather lived.

Bellingham WA is still a haven, free stores, work/trade is common enough that it messes with tax projections for those counties.
I remember being up there when I was a teen, at a park(island reserve) called God's Pocket. I was on the water in a kiak when a Orca Pod broke surface around me. the water was like glass and I could see hundreds of feet into the water. Then beaching on Malcom Is, and meeting the people there. I felt like a honored guest, first by sutch a moving yet tranquil experiance, and then by the warm and genuine comunity we met. God's Pocket indeed!!

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
I am so happy that I got involved in the Portland, oregon burner community last year.
I've been getting so much word-of-mouth referrals for locksmithing, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and electronics repair, home theater installs, and now RV maintenance jobs. If this keeps up I may not have to go back to the default employment sector.
I even met a couple guys in the movie special FX / pyrotechnics business in the Portland area who are, surprise, burners.

Re: Time for a Happy Thread
We went out last night for dinner. She said she wanted to visit a place that I soon determined (despite her horrible pronunciation) was Harbor Freight. I said "wow, you really are a tomboy." She said, "no, I want to pick up this special soaker hose for my garden." We also cruised for a rototiller (another pronunciation challenge!). Then ramen and some blue moon beer, and lots of intimate conversation. Really getting to know this wench. Hope this one turns out all right. It's not complicated. We dig each other and there's nothing to get between us.

Good Luck UD - Glad to hear you are happy, but in my experience there is nothing involving women that is not complicated.
And ladies, before the attacks begin - In my defense, in 25 years of marriage I have yet to receive an answer less than 3 paragraphs for even the most basic yes or no question (such as are you hungry?).

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.
