Why camp out? I can walk out my front door on8/21/2017 and get nearly 3 minutes worth of totality. I'm thinking of doing an Addams Family number and catching up on my tan outside during the eclipse.BeeWeeDee wrote:Maybe this is too early - but maybe not.
Next year (Aug 21, 2017) has a total eclipse of the sun with about 2 1/2 minutes of totality streaking across Wyoming. Any interest in a pre-burn eclipse camp out followed by a dash to TTITD?

Ugh...have todo the grocery shopping for TTITD today. One of my most dreaded chores, that and figuring out the clothes box.
We should just wear our underwear and eat crackers. Simple

Long ago, in a land far far away, I had a volleyball career that lasted about 10 years at the top of my game.
Did some traveling and played various configurations. I was an avid player.
And so, I do love watching at times. And volleyball.

Well, a celebration drink all around. I sorted my clothes. The pile I left behind was twice as big as the ones I'm bringing. I marked those bins for garage sale next year. Some of that stuff has never been to the burn and never will. At least not by me.

You're doing better on the clothes front than I am, Ratty. Every year I say I'm going to pare it down and not bring the things I never wear and yet somehow every year I end up bringing more clothes than the year before. I'm sort of at a loss for how that works....

Elliot! I hope everything works out for you up there.
Nine days before I go and I'm UNPACKING my cargo trailer/kitchen. The floor is tongue and groove 2x6 that lets in an awful amount of dust when you're zipping along at 60 mph on the playa. It was a great weekend for a shakedown though. I have a list (when I find it) of a dozen or so things that I need , need more of or don't need at all.

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Hiya! Hope everything's OK out there for everybody.
My challenges began yesterday, thankfully none were insurmountable or unforeseen.
Piddly-diddly stuff, like getting a new 'proof of insurance" card, and activating the 10% cash back statement credit on purchases on one of my bank cards (Yes, I made damn sure I read the fine print before I did so.)
I did get an unexpected thank you note this morning from a gentleman in SW Missouri, whose work I review. I spotted a simple transposition error, and called him about it. Luckily, it was before the final report was completed, so no harm was done. In essence I stayed ahead of the ball game and he thanked me for it, because I clued him in on his error before it became an issue at higher levels. Illustrates the value to me of peer review.
Just joe, I feel for you, buddy. I bought an enclosed trailer just so I wouldn't have to deal with the dust. The outfit I bought from got me a 4' by 6' by 8' for $1500 cash.; came with a full-size spare, jack, and lugnut wrench. What was really surprising is the two free inspections you get with the purchase, at 1 and 2 years.
And the last-minute purchase and list season is now here. I have trips planned for the next week to three grocery stores, two department stores, the army-navy surplus and the outfitter store. Funny, the level of frustration may be such that another trip to the liquor store (THE ONLY AREA WHERE PURCHASES ARE COMPLETE) is justified, if nothing else to ease the pains of running around like a headless chicken.
The big news is that I nearly completed the rewrite of the Toby Keith song 'I love this bar' for use in BRC.
Included is the chorus:
"I love this bar.........
It's my kind of place
Just makin' fun of hippies,
Puts a big smile on my face.
Come as you are....
Or in your art car.........
mmmm.....mmmmm....mmmmm...I LOVE THIS BAR.
Methinks karaoke is in my future.

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Welcome back from meteor camp, Just_Joe!
Hey that reminds me, I need to remind myself to call the cc companies on the morning of departure day to let 'em know about the trip. On one hand it's annoying that they're so twitchy about unusual activity these days, but on the other hand I appreciate that we haven't had any bad guys breaking in and cleaning out accounts.
And.... wooohoo, my render finally finished! The final render took a little over 174 hours and 23 minutes (not counting all the trial and error to get the settings right). That comes out to more than 85 quadrillion (or 85 billion billion) calculations. Man, am I glad that one's done and that the machines did all the number crunching. That's the last piece of art in the bag, and on track to be ready for me to pack it with the rest of everything else this weekend. Drinks all round!

Someone help me here, but I've got to wonder if that one render doesn't amount to more calculations than humankind has done on paper, ever, since the beginning of time.trilobyte wrote: .. That comes out to more than 85 quadrillion (or 85 billion billion) calculations.

A power struggle and I'm sort of in the middle because I brought the new person last year
he is taking over the camp and kept all
but maybe this is a sign of our times
Put politics on the playa seem against all the principles to me so I will not engage

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Oh no, sorry to hear about the continued drama, Aurelia. Hopefully the new person hits their stride and people are better able to connect when everyone is face to face in the dust.
BvB, that would be tough to say. People use math in some way every single day of their lives (whether intentionally or not), and have been for millennia. It all adds up, as they say. I tend to buy into a more fractalized mindset, and believe strongly in chaos theory and complex system design. I think that nearly every step of the way, the use of tools (from fingers to abacus to paper and the early machines designed to calculate tides and aid with navigation) machines helped the humans that made them do far more than they could without. The funny thing is despite all that horsepower, man I wish it would have rendered more quickly

In other news, whew... I think merging all the seeking camp (and related discussion) threads into a single People Seeking Camps thread will help restore a bit of sanity to the Camps & Villages board.

Evenin All!
It's been a few weeks since I been here. Having a lot to do.
The last two days I've been working on SR447. Helping with a grind and pave project around mile marker 23, north of the sand dunes.
Today was the best. Got to see the 747 art project being hauled to the playa
. Actually it was parked along the highway across from the police station in Nixon with about 15 NHP vehicles parked around it. There were some low utility wires in the intersection. I don't know if that's what the issue was but that's what I gathered. It's gonna be tight for the truck driver pulling it when they get to the marble bluff area just north of Nixon.
A coworker got a picture of it on the road near the market in Nixon. It was two lanes wide. From one edge to the other. The truck driver was straddling the double yellow.
Beautiful sight to say the least.

It could have been because of the work we doing as well. Traffic was reduced to one lane escorted.
