There is nothing wrong at the root with the idea of virtual currency. It's managed every day with the SWIFT system. The days of gold as currency are gone. Paper money is pretty abstract in itself, but is built on a world economic system with checks, balances, traceability, and public data managed by the Federal Reserve in the US, and the equivalent in other countries.

The country banks issue currency. Crypto currency is anyone can issue currency.

The devil in the details of crypto virtual currency is the implementation. The problem with Bitcoin was the end limit of coins which built in inflation. Many coin systems are a get rich quick scheme, and gambling on coins is the game after.

The real issue is corruption. Either boosting the coin of the minter in this case, manipulating the coin, or blocking tracing crime by following the money. It all would make a great dystopian novel or movie.
