Brain overload causes revealed!
From Computerworld; the rest is at http://www.computerworld.com/management ... =home98770
Too much to do, too little time, too few resources. If you're feeling that the harder you work, the behinder you get, you're not alone. You and your distracted, impatient, irritable IT co-workers may be suffering from a previously unrecognized neurological phenomenon called attention deficit trait. In the January issue of the Harvard Business Review, psychiatrist Edward M. Hallowell, renowned for his work on attention deficit disorder, describes the inner frenzy affecting so many in today's IT workplace. The author, founder of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, Mass., talked with Computerworld's Kathleen Melymuka about what brings on ADT and how you can control it.
What is attention deficit trait? It's a severe case of modern life. It's my term for what happens to the brain when it becomes overloaded with information, obligations and more data points than it can keep up with. You start to resemble someone with actual attention deficit disorder -- distractibility, impulsivity, impatience, restlessness, irritability. In an attempt to get everything done, you become less and less efficient, and that leads to underachievement and deteriorating performance even as you're trying to improve.
How is this different from attention deficit disorder? True ADD is a genetically transmitted brain trait. This one is purely environmentally produced -- simply a function of overload.

It snowed about 9 inches here yesterday! Pretty muched sucked. Today isn't much better. They cut funding for snowplowing. Can you believe that?! How can you cut plowing?! Idiots I tell you!

fucking a. i'm going to rant here for a second, away from the assholes who are making a mess of other places on this board.
asking hard questions - good. rooting throught things - good. calling people on behaviour that is felt to be hurtful - good. but how about letting the horse fucking die, huh? i mean, this is going beyong beating the proverbial dead equine, now the damn this has been resurrected in hopes that the beating will stop. i'm gonna go religious on all of your asses.
i cannot believe - well, maybe i can - what assholes people like jim and chicken are being. i understand the folks who stood up for cory, and i give major applause to geek and harriet for their contributions. i think i'm actually appalled - and i've seen a lot of shit go flying here in the past.
*shaking head*
it's a sad, sad day for the boards. i wish chicken and jim would go back where they came from . after today i'm pretty sure i never want anything to do with either of them. i don't know if i can keep an open mind about it anymore.
fuck this shit, man. just fuck it.

Re: Brain overload causes revealed!
Maybe you heard about the flooding in southern Utah. My dad's house (which I actually own ... long story) is at least 25 miles from the nearest creek (55 miles from an actual river). It is on a hellacious desert in the Escalante Valley if you wanna look it up -- bottom right hand corner of the state. I guess there was just too much rain. Dikes broke, roads were washed out, basements filled.
Anyway, here's what the house looked like yesterday. I asked him if he had flood insurance and he said "I don't need flood insurance, I live on a desert." Fortunately he has no basement and is still dry at this writing ...

Since the first day of demands and threats I bit my tongue and will continue to do so. My solution to it all is cut all art funding and let people host some bakesales and shit. Let them interact with the public and get off of the horses that have grown so tall. The art won't die off it will just make people more creative in finding ways to fund their art while also giving back on the community level.Rian Jackson wrote:fucking a. i'm going to rant here for a second, away from the assholes who are making a mess of other places on this board.

Just a few of my thoughts but there are threads for those.
How about a nice redbull and vodka? I need a pick-me-up. I am damn tired. I am sitting with a movie playing in the background as I try to work and just really am having a difficult time doing so.

Now don't you wish you had been at karoke night? George is the adorable one in the plaid, others are regular patrons at the bar where we are, coincidentally, regular patrons. (Kids meals: $1). It's the Brittania Arms on Deanza in Cupertino. All our Burning Man friends are invited for a rerun, next Monday.

I'll make you one Sandwichman but then I gotta run. I'll get myself one later.

mornin' friends...afternoon...whatever.
i just have to plunk down a couple cents on this one:
jeez, giggles...yer a single mom of THREE staring at a radiation box all day AND trying to juggle a hot affair...yer SURPRISED that your mind feels overloaded...??? it's perfectly appropriate for where you are in your life.
there isn't anything wrong with not being able to handle all the information we get...we were never MEANT to handle this much information!
i just feel really strongly about this one...

i really think it boils down to that: "It's a severe case of modern life". The problem isn't with anyone's inadequate concentration ability, but with the ever increasingly absurd expectations of our fast-fast-faster world. I choose to simplify my life rather than attempt to alter my brain or decide that there is anything wrong with me. i think choosing to see it as a personal 'disorder' is way underestimating our abilities as humans, victimizing if you will, and way over-empowering the current societal norms with are NOT appropriate to what we are naturally inclined to.Kristines wrote:From Computerworld; the rest is at http://www.computerworld.com/management ... =home98770

I'm with you, Tisha, in that simplifying life to manageable levels is the cure, I'm just not sure how to do that right now. It's hard not to *feel* like there's something wrong with me, though, despite what my rational mind tells me. I guess that's why I've (mostly) taken it easy with myself during this little episode of dysfunction I've been having.
Besides which, I've made some cool new friends, have something unbelievable to look forward to, and started making things and sending out gifts, all of which seem worth it to me.
Now, the electricity company may not agree.
{takes back the extra red bull and vodka and drinks}
Ms. Kristine, I have not sent yours out as I just made it today; I have at least four others to send now as well but have to figure out the packaging aspect (don't want them to be smooshed).

thanks, guin. it's all too much!!! makes me want to go sit and stare at a tree for a day. like people used to.
Giggs - i think yer doing great, babe. i need to be reminded sometimes, too, but generally...single moms that manage to keep the children fed, clothed, clean, and loved are doing a fan-fucking-tastic job in this world that does very little to appreciate/support us.
smoosh?? WTF are you sending us???!!!
(wanna sit in the non-tobacco section with me for a minute or 20?)

.....do you guys have Boddington's on tap? I could sure use one about now-I need a break from dealing with insurance adjusters, realtors and contractors. After the furnace fritzed at our old house, which we're still feeding the Mortagage Monster on, the hot AND cold lines in the shower burst....We were out of town for my grandmother's funeral, so there was a good week's worth of water (ankle deep) in some places, and the rest was transformed into a hothouse. It was raining in there! A rainbow of mold. Now I get to fill a dumpster, since ALL of the carpets and much of the panelling has to go. Sheesh.
....Aw, Man! A pint glass and everything! You guys ROCK. *savoring the foamy goodness*

yah - i got home last night after 14 straight hours of kids, work, errands, kids, social visit, kids, and had great plans of paying some bills, or doing some dishes, or even just reading - instead i found myself an hour later laying on the floor in front of the heater just staring at the ceiling in silence.
it was wonderful.
i stayed there for another 30 minutes before going to bed.

Beverages from me for all the single moms and pops.
You are very right Tisha that single parents that can provide just the basics alone should be praised. Here in Portland we have had major issues with children being abused and foster families neglecting children and here are a group of you that manage to keep your lives in order while the state fucks up so many more.
A toast to you all.

I agree with Jason. My sister did it for almost twenty years and managed to put my niece through the University of California, too... while working a crappy job... God Bless You All...

Must be nap time after lunch. Let me just leave these afternoon snacks on the counter. I know it is not much but most everyone likes cupcakes. And these yellow cake ones with chocolate frosting should make a few of ya happy.
I'll just grab this bottle of whiskey on the way out.
