One of my roosters was very ill last week. Normally if they get that bad they die and become local scavenger food. This one is holding on. He's back in solitary as his brief attempt at general population made him go back to illness. He doesn't walk very well, but he is eating/drinking. Can't figure out how to post a pic from an iPad or I would.

My two dogs, Chairman Mao (left - 7 pounds) and Nixon (right - 19 pounds).

And then the Chairman in a sombrero, because it's a chihuahua in a sombrero.

I just secured the walls w chicken scratch bag fabric, and battened down the hutch for him. He's not healthy enough for general population.
I'm putting way too much emotional investment into this fucking rooster. But I don't want to outright kill him.

I got a couple hens that I thought we'd kill when they stopped producing eggs.

Instead, we have two hens that are now our pets ... I could never harm them! lol

That's right 48.
All of my 32 chickens are pets. The girls poop lovely tan small but very flavorful eggs. Good job girls.
The boys however wake me up at 4:30 in the fucking morning.
GET A FUCKING JOB!
I just secured the chicken coop for the impending storm today. They don't appreciate my efforts. Some edwinna bitch launched into hysterics while I was on a precarious ladder.

Oh.
All of my 32 chicken's names are Eddie. They are that imbred.

Well, it's a very small sombrero, perhaps better fitted on a squirrel than a rat-dog?

Robbidobbs - I LUV chickens. :)
We had a rooster, a bantam black cochin, which means a feathered black bowling ball with an attitude. He got sideways with something, and whatever that something was BIT HIS TAIL OFF. Of course, it took a couple of days to find him, and it was gangrenouos, and awful. But I cleaned him up, and threw him in a cat cage with food and water and forgot about him. Three days later he was ok. Meaner than hell - but well. He fathered many babies. :)
Let GOOD win!

Robbi and Sunbeam, A couple of weeks ago I found a banty hen in the street kinda chewed about the head. (My CRAZY next door neighbor has a feral cat colony.) This little darling was tiny but full grown. I took her to my friends with a chicken yard. Sadly, she didn't make it. Sometimes they are so tough and other times they drop dead from a loud noise. I've always loved chickens.

I have lots of chicken survival stories. Almost all roosters.
One year it rained roosters. We had a big rain storm, and the next morning there was a greentailed rooster on the front porch. Kinda ordinary, but missing some feathers. So I built him a cage, got a couple of hens from the feed store - this was before we moved out into the country. He was mean (as roosters will be). But protective of the hens, who were happy to have a MAAAAN in their midst.
My Dad is a veterinarian. Dad is the deadliest person I have ever met live. We never went hungry even tho we were pretty poor when I was a kid because Dad could always hunt and fish... I digress, but for a reason.
When Dad came to visit the next time after it rained roosters, a bout a year later, I asked him to check out the bird, because it walked funny.
So Dad reaches in to the cage and the Rooster gets all crazy and attacks. Very calmly Dad broke its neck. End of fight!
So, I have always been taught that if you kill something you eat it - makes killing people very unlikely. I plucked and cooked that damn rooster, thinking to feed it to the dogs.
When the bird was cooked and disassembled - it had a partially healed but completely broken back.
Tough old bird indeed (the rooster as well as my Dad).
Let GOOD win!

And your dog is a veterinarian? I'd worry if my dog (which I don't have) was squirming on the table he'd snap his neck too!

I'd wanted to post this news this morning with a commemorative picture, but alas I'm too dumb.
Anyway, Rooster is no longer with us. I gave him a flying funeral this morning into the berry bushes, as is traditional in these parts. He was a fighter until the end. He will be remembered for his singing, especially his solo Beatles covers at 3:30am.

Two roosters have been duking it out for a couple days. One of them looked kind of bad this morning, and not at all acting like a healthy chicken. So he's now in solitary.confinement until he heals up. The other rooster will just keep beating him up with all that blood on him.
Sigh.

My best buddy died on Christmas day last year and I was and am still heartbroken. Bucky was my buddy for 11 years. He died of intestinal issues and it came on quick.
Image

My house was just not the same without my tail wagging buddy waking me up in the morning licking my face and greeting me at the door when I came home from work like he hadn't seen me in years. I'm a dog person. I need to have dog hair on everything and chew toys strewn about the house.

Last month, I went to the Sacramento SPCA and rescued Bruno. He's a 5 year old German Shepherd/Lab mix. (German Shepradore) He was just days from being put down because nobody wants to adopt a 5 year old dog. They all want puppies. I saw his picture on their web site and went down to meet him. He's starting to bond with me now and follow me around the house. He has to be in the same room as I am all the time.

Anyway, meet Bruno!
