The climate on the west coast this year is much like 1998 was. 98 was a rainy year on the playa ...
The event experienced more moisture than many had seen at that time of year before. There was a drizzle of rain on several days, and Pepe's Opera was delayed for several hours until 3 am because of an afternoon downpour that left it difficult to move the sound system into place. On Monday afternoon, a light drizzled slowed the departure process as people left the event site. The rain didn't stop until Tuesday morning, and upon light of day those left in camp were surrounded by water. Very little of the surface was dry enough to walk on, and shoes/boots covered with garbage bags became the de riguer fashion. This weather anomaly delayed the cleanup process more than just the three days it took to dry the surface. We lost a huge number of people by the week's end, and all items on the surface became embedded as the mud dried. Clean up took almost 2 months. You can read Will Roger's report on the difficulties.

Think of clay ... that goes down 2000 or more feet deep. When it gets wet it gets soft and you can sink up to your knee if someone has dumped a lot of water in one spot and when it hardens it is like concrete. You DONT want to get the playa wet. DO NOT think you are going to dump waste water on the ground. It will be a totally nasty thing to do to the person that steps in it.

You know... interesting that you mentioned that...

I had this mental image of, if you could remove for a moment all of the gypsum, that it would be a great and craggy valley of black rock... as if the playa were very, very deep. I suppose that’s why they mine it just down the road, huh?

That is fine, but dont RELY on it working. If it is cool and cloudy or rainy have a backup plan to haul your water out. Figure on hauling it out and if you can reduce it with evap, consider that gravy.

It is deep, I think I read that it goes down several thousand feet in places but I can't remember the exact number. I picked 2000 because I know it was more than that. The playa surface is at about 4000 ft altitude and was the bottom of a lake for a long time. Possibly filling and drying over various glaciations.

Good night geekster and Msky... Happy day tomorrow

I’m leaving some of that ice cream on the bar if anybody wants some (digs into magic ditty-bag and pulls out four, count ‘em, four quarts of Chocolate Raspberry Truffle...)

Until we meet again...

I'm still here, Blue - just not feeling overly chatty tonight. Still recovering from the evil lung nasties. How are you tonight?
