Definitely not a San Pedro. It may be the night blooming cereus.FIGJAM wrote:Looks like a trichocereus also known as a San Pedro.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Greetings all.
Went back out to the Black Rock Desert today. We ended up at Trago hot springs, on the south side of the playa. It was kinda windy, but the dust was so thick, we could only see about 100 yards. We headed back towards Gerlach and dust thinned out a lot, but the wind was blowing even harder. The closer we got to Gerlach, the wetter the playa was, less dust. The area where Black rock city was looks super dry still, and very dusty.
We made it to Gerlach and had a nice dinner at Bruno's.

NOT a San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) - the one in the picture has more and longer spines than the St Pete.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
you may note, I was arguing granite can and does contain water, in my above statement related you your first shown here. "discuss" meaning we'd have to talk about your original statement^Rhino! wrote:Hmmmmm......looks like I've created a stir.
Ygmir, you COULD use the Carrera marble.
.....................
Granite, on the other hand, has interlocking mineral textures. No place for water to get into. Feldspars and quartzes GRAB each other and hold on tight. Ferromagnesian minerals (hornblende and augite, for instance, and biotite mica) tend to weather quicker, and are not good. The granites I use are co-magmatic (same magma) and are low in ferromagnesian content. The BEST is Graniteville Granite, known by its trade name as "Missouri Red" That granite has been quarried since the Civil War. They use HUGE extrahot oxyacetylene jets to cut out blocks of it. Those blocks are then lifted for cutting by cranes to make tombstones, countertops, and the like. Missouri Red takes a high polish.

Hi gang!
Thanks Rhino, I feel better now. I thought the Carrera marble, or the like, would be ok.
I might discuss, though, granites don't, or can't, contain water. It does soak in . I can leave a cup ring, on most any granite counter (unsealed) with a simple cup with water under it.....it does evaporate back out, but, the water will go in. I've heard of experimental water filters, using granite, as well. Acknowledging, some are far more porous than others.
Heading down to hopefully have lunch with Magic Marty today, then meetings all weekend.
someone else may have to take cartoon duty!! unless there is wifi, and I'm doubting that.
*scurries out back door*I beg to differ with you, though, that granites DO contain water. It's in the neighborhood of a quarter percent or less molecular water. This is from elemental analyses that determine everything in the granite, from Silicon (loads) down to the rare earths, or lanthanide elements. Magmatic water and a few other 'volatiles' are what give andesitic volcanoes their explosive power. Sudden release of pressure from hundreds or even thousands of atmospheric pressure to 'normal 1 atmosphere pressure is like putting a pin in a balloon. Boom.

No we're not rumbling, but I'm just sitting here in total awe of a mountain that I got clued in on today. Called Sinabung, it's an Indonesian volcano that blew on Feb. 9 with a pyroclastic flow that created tornadoes in its wake. What a one-two punch!AntiM wrote:![]()

Consider it my geology gift to you all today.
P.S. The composition of the ash is andesitic, median between basaltic and granitic. That means it's explosive a la Mount St. Helens.

Thank you Figgy, Yes that is my kind of Volcano
Although my family always grumbled because I made them go look deep at each one
And payback to me is that my 5 year old grandchild likes nothing better than volcanic eruptions.
Fabulous weekend of music !

*chuckling, trying to imagine that encounter...*
Well, I finally found out what the cactus is... Echinopsis Candicans. Yes, night blooming.
The picture I posted is a few years old. Now, there are more and longer arms, and sometimes, there will be more than 20 blooms at once. The blooms last one day.
*looking for a more recent picture*
Same plant, looks like 23 blooms, with more getting ready to open.

My San Pedros have never flowered, but I've only had them a couple of years. They have fewer and much shorter spines, and fewer ridges (5 to 7), and grow taller and skinnier than that one in the picture.
