Well, that was my problem going through the public school system. I think in many cases like this that yes, poor teaching is to blame. Why is that? Many reasons but I think that low pay and crappy training are a couple of the main reasons.

Ohhh, and by the way dvd, Fuck you.
F*ck again! Some of my teachers were great and some were hacks and some were in between. The support from the larger school system was non-exisistent and I just sat quietly and didn't do much or act out, so it was easier for them to let me slide than to intervene. My parents didn't know what to do, had troubles of their own and weren't the squeeky wheel types, so the more sophisticated parents were able to make the system work, but mine couldn't or didn't. LIke it or not, teachers are--and probably should be--the next line of defence. But, for 1000s of reasons it just doesn't happen.

Jesus Fucking Christ, this thread speaks to me tonight.
The 17 year old is failing 4 classes, mostly due to failing to turn-in homework...
and
FUCK! I'M TRAPPED, WORKING WITH MORONS!!! HEEELLLLLPPPPP!!
The kid, also 17, does not do his homework and homework counts a lot nowadays. When I was in HS I could ignore it as BS since it only accounted for 5-10% or less of the grade. BTW I have never told him this. Got a call at work the other day, "I don't understand it, Ian does not do his homework and still gets a high B's on the tests." (duh) "But his clumative score is an "F". He has a GF that who is trying to get him off his butt. I've got to get that girl something nice for Christmas; anybody know what 16 year old girls like? Err, other than 17 year old boys, she already has one of those. It has nothing to do with the teachers, it has to do with the twit thinking that childhood lasts forever, or at least wanting it to.

I work with idiots. Big deal, big meeting, "What are we going to do about this data?" Blah Blah, wastes my time and about ten others. I examine table, response, "Have any of you looked at the data with command line vs. your click and drool shi.. stuff? Your concerns are totally groundless!" New Director has to remind me later that he does not approve of me calling co-workers half-wits. One nice thing about the old director was that he was used to it.

Oh, and FUCK, had $1000 vet bill this month and cannot afford the parts to get my motorcycle running again.

Fuck, I HATED homework when I was a kid. Never did it. HATED it. Why? Take Social Studies, for example. I would get the book at the start of the year and read the entire thing cover to cover over a weekend. They should have just given me a test on the contents of the fucking book and give me the next one. Instead I spent the rest of the fucking year going over shit I got the first week of school. I loved learning but I hated doing shit over and over that I already knew. I was bored. I wasn't learning much.

Math ... go in on Monday, get what we were going to be studying that week. Maybe go to class Tuesday if I needed some practice at it, come back Friday and ace the test.

Public school is designed for those on the left side of the curve. I would bet you that if he was in a self-paced program and knew that homework was real assignments that could get him graduated from school sooner, he would be going for it. Instead it is pretty much just "busy work". For people on the right hand side of the curve, school is pretty much just "doing time".

Hai,
Public school is designed for those on the left side of the curve.
I believe that is why homework is so stressed now, you can know or learn nothing but as long as you do the homework you can pass with a good grade. Last I checked the kid was getting an A in math because his GF was doing his homework. I know he has to be failing the tests; he has the same math abilities that I do; none. The only A I ever got in any kind of math was college level set theory, now that makes sense.

LIke it or not, teachers are--and probably should be--the next line of defence. But, for 1000s of reasons it just doesn't happen.
Pardon my rant:

I have a teaching certificate; my training was pretty darn good, but my years as a sub were better. Teachers are tied down so many ways there often is little they can do even when they recognize a problem and want to help. You're strapped in by lack of funds, a state curriculum, standardized testing, strict equity for all students no matter what, and the ludicrous No Child Left Behind pain in the ass. Each year teachers a required to add more to the basic curriculum and given less time to accomplish the goals, hence the heavy reliance on homework. (Teach values my fucking ass!)

I knew one teacher that would only seat students alphabetically in case a parent complained; this guy used to be a good teacher and was beaten down by threats of lawsuits. I tried to help ESL students in a history class and got slammed for favoritism; all I had done was rewrite the test so the English was simplified for non-English speakers. IMHO, portfolios are the only decent way to evaluate an education, but no, the government, and many parents, adore those hard grades from a standard test.

It isn't that teachers love homework, someone has to grade the fucking crap; I can give dozens of valid reasons for various types of homework. And then there's the elusive illusion of "motivation" ... hah, find a way to administer THAT and half the education problems would dry up.

Fuck, I loved working with middle and high school kids, I really hated trying to teach in a public school. I'm actually glad I got sick and couldn't take a position locally.

My fucking 2 cents.

hey everybody, everyone of the teacher's were willing to work with these youngsters... the proof and effort is required of the young men.

i had good and not as good teachers... and i wouldn't have their job on a dare (at least, i wouldn't go through the Illinois Teaching Certificate process)

these two knuckleheads have to begin working on their school work as fervently as they play X-Box.

Fukin hell, thanks for the insight. I always forget the restrictions placed on teachers for one reason or another and tend to generalize education problems as being human and financial. Sorry.
I am going to stick with the fact that public educators DO NOT make enough money for what they do, nowhere close to it. Thus I feel that this may lead to a deterioration of motivation. If I am way off please say so...

Also, AntiM, sounds like you really cared about your job as a teacher. I hope you recover soon so children can benefit from that.

If it comes with the territory accept the responsibillity.

What kind of bullshit is it that you feel you just want some nookie but dont want to deal with the kids.

Imagine how the kids feel. Own up to the entire package.

I have had my share of relationships where all it took was a little bit of time to get the children off in the right direction. And some tough kids some of them were at that. I still see them to this day and they are doing great. That's the best feeling in the world in the long run. Sometimes it takes a little extra effort but that's what you gotta do in order for it all to work out. Nothing is easy.

i really hate to step 'tween the two of you, but i have to say, DVD, that Joel has posted a lot to the effect of the work, worry, and effort he's putting into these kids that aren't his, that he didn't ask for, but that he IS taking responsibility for. And he's only been at it for 2 years. I think the fact that he even WENT to the teacher conference says a lot. My kids actual dad's rarely do that...

said situations are rarely the same...

for instance... did the children in your situation get molested as a 7 year old by an unknown male suspect? possibly his father?

for instance.... did the father of the children in your situation own 8K in past child support?

for instance... did the previous adult male role model's conduct a abusive relationship with the children's mother?

so, your difficulty understanding is exactly that... your difficulty.

Guess it's the fucking same for Joel understanding me I guess.[/quote]

no, it isn't the same DVD/Tony/Coyote... while i don't claim to understand you... which is of no consequence to me... i weigh my words far more carefully than you ever imagined... attempt proper grammar and i use a dictionary too.

so, there is very little about us that is the same.
