PS- Montana has its own oil wells and refineries so I'm not sure how much gas actually come from Alaska
I doubt that those proposed bike lanes would have made much difference. Depending on the location funneling those funds into buses or better yet light rail would be more practical.

kinetic, I agree with you. Rail is the way to go. Bike lanes are a good idea, but most people just aren't willing to change their lifestyle.

Like it or not, our petroleum economy will slowly, inevitably wind down.
97%? of our energy reserves are in coal.
At least with oil, you can extrract it without ripping up the whole overlying surface.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Green vs. coal extraction battles are far worse than Green vs. oil.
Vesta says that the whole U.S. could be powered from the wind in just Nebraska.
One of these days, Gov is going to get slapped in the face with CO2 emisions and global warming.
Once the whole eastern seabord is awash and wracked by hurricanes, they might catch on.
Wind, solar and nuke will win out because burning coal speeds up the death sentence.
It's going to get very messy, before "big energy" capitulates and allows rational decisions about transportation to be implemented.
I fear Alaska will suffer greatly before the carbon economy fades into history.
On old,old maps, the whole northwest of Alaska was referred to as the "Naval No. 7 Petroleum Reserve"
ANWR may be just the second battle in a long war.

I have to give credit where credit is due. General Motors was responsible for killing the "Red Line" transportation system in L.A. thereby ensuring no system of mass transportation. They killed the electric car after proving it was feasible. They were partly responsible for killing "Solar One" in Dagget.
May they all rot in hell!

With this thread, I was sort of predicting an assault on ANWR.
I guess they did an end run. They're ending the moratorium on coastal drilling instead. I guess that the upside is,,,when I take the little kids to the beach at night, we'll see more "fairy castles"
