Quitting smoking. This really blows.

Hmmm....I was gonna start a thread about quitting smoking. Then I was playing around here and decided to go to page 18 and here it is. I am seriously contemplating giving up the nasty habit, but those anxiety attacks I get first thing in the morning (I have found) can only be gotten rid of if I have that first smoke. Ahhhhhhh.....

I've tried quitting before. I did it on the patch and it worked for me, until I went to a bar and thought, "I can smoke just one." Yeah, right. I have tried since then with Wellbutrin (made me nuts too). Didn't work. I guess I'll go back to the patch or try the gum or lozenges. Yoga helped my friend Kelly to quit.

Niacin, how are you doing? Are you still smoke-free?

I quit 5 years ago. It wasn't easy Donita. I started smoking organic tobacco first... then I gave that up. Someone told me the chemicals in commercial cigs are just as addictive as the tobacco it self, so I figured it might make it easier.

It did. 4 me.

Plus it's a pain in the ass to have to roll your own.

I've done it repeatedly......the last time being several years now. I just told myself the world had become a giant theater and I was not allowed to light up anywhere. I never had a problem with lighting a cigarette in a theater no matter how bad I wanted one.

The best way I quit (among all the methods I tried) was when I decided to try not making a big deal of it and instead of the huge quitting drama, I just recognized that this smoking thing between my fingers was KILLING ME, and just flicked it away and stopped.

Not Quit, just stopped.

That one seemed to go easiest for me.

Not sayin I haven't slipped, but when when I think about smoking now, it's always with the awareness that it's just slightly healthier for me than jabbing a knife into my face.

And the fact that food actually TASTES, not just tastes better, is a big deal. So is being able to make love to my wife without wheezing like an old man.

Hope that helps.

My sympathies go out to you. I quit three years ago, but it was "easy" for me - because I had no real choice. Taking a shower in the morning, with the steam coming up, I was hacking so hard I was literally almost vomiting. Plus my throat hurting all the time (cough drops didn't help), my nasel passages burning, noticing how badly my clothes, car, & apartment smelled... well, let's just say I had to quit :D.

I chewed a truckful of gum (non-nicotine), & since that time, toothpicks have been my constant companion. Personally, I was breathing easier the very next day. Hoping the best for you.
