shows the flooded playa, water on the playa does a great job of smoothing out man's remains, but makes it hard to drive on.

I'd like to point out once again that it's the BLM who insist that the event stay in the current site. It would probably would have less impact if it moved around the playa more (preferably farther out), but the feds have put it in the same location since 2000.

By the way AZ, I shake my finger in your direction for ressurrecting this thread. Let it die.

I don't believe it's ever going to happen in Aug/Sept (maybe Oct). If it does rain remember rule #1 - stay put, don't try and drive, wait - the playa will almost certainly dry out the next day.

Last year I was caught half way across by a sudden rain shower at dusk - rather than pop in the 4wd and brave it out (I know better, I've seen the results from those who didn't) I pulled over into the serpents (figuring anyone who's going to be bowling along at 90 will be avoiding them) rolled out my sleeping bag in the back of the truck and waited 'till morning - by 10am the playa was as hard as ever. The wind and sun soak up that moisture amazingly fast. On the other hand driving in mud is a disaster waiting to happen (I once saw someone who had let their wheel wells fill and then been baked by the friction with the tires - the tires were burned down to the belts - but amazingly still inflated).

Well, they created its own entrance as I understand it. The powers that be may have decided that having a single high impact site and saving the rest of the playa from the intence usage made the most sence. I imagine that there are arguements to be made on either side, even if I don't have the knowledge to debate intelligently about it.

umm ... I was responding to a scenario of cars having to be left on the playa for the winter because the surface had become too bad for them ever to drive off - indeed if people don't wait for the surface to harden up after something like '98 the playa will get horribly trashed and ripped up - and we'll all have problems getting out - but if we all wait a few days for things to get a bit better rather than panic and all try to leave at once we'll be OK
