My cousin was a police officer and never used his gun, but was able to disarm a knife wielding suspect many times with very minimal martial arts training. Hard to make a judgement on this without all the facts, but if true it doesn't say a lot about the training of police in LA.
I don't know why they didn't just taser him... then we could have re-lived the whole 'don't tase me bro' moment and we all coulda gone back to arm-chair-quarterbacking something else.
