It is the power of God that puts chills up and down my spine.
It is the power of God that keeps me warm.
It is the Power of God that makes everyone take two steps back.
It is the power of God that makes them come back for more.
It is the power of God that makes buildings fall.
It is the power of God that will destroy us all.
My God is Fire....wanna play ?

All was beautifully perfect and balanced in the beginning.
How can you explain how all we see throughout history is decay and destruction. Evolution teaches a progression of biologic complexity. The geologic record demonstrates great diversity in the beginning. As it began, the Earth was perfect. As time goes on, it gets less perfect. Death and decay is all around us. The world is decaying. Biologic diversity is smaller not greater.

I know it works for me.
I know, through real examples of what I list, I've experienced things that make me believe as I do.
I know I don't care if anyone believes me, or, accepts my beliefs.
I know I tend not to share much of it, publicly, due to skepticism and the unending need to address it.

First off:

Pretty close to my thoughts...
If God exists, and has an influence over any part of our life/consciousness then everything would be fate and planned and wouldn't matter. This also cancels out "Free Will".
If God created everything then stepped back and takes no other role, then it doesn't matter if He exists.
As for why....That may be a loaded question,I'll do my best...
I was brought up Catholic, and forced to get confirmed against my will, this i think turned me away from the church. I started to figure out what i believe and what made sense to me. I do not think that after we die we are going to have the same consciousness. Not like an "Oh, I'm dead now" moment. and because of that I cannot say it actually matters what happens after we die because it may be beyond human conception.
I am Agnostic Through Apathy.

the incredible vast wonder that life is .......unjonharley wrote:So far,A few of you were happy to tell me what you believe.
No one has told "why?" they beleive in god.
no matter how far you go into science, there always seems to be something created out of nothing. quite a lot of something. everything, in fact, when you get right down to it. and there is far more that we do not know than what we do know.
i have to say it ... religions do a lot of good, as well as bad. we just never hear of the good, and there are a lot of people who do not want to hear about the good ... but that does not mean it isn't there.

There's something in us and in everything, diggling around, moving DNA to and fro, making sure electrons fly in the right orbit, exploding galaxies gloriously and ensuring that a sunset over the Grand Canyon is suitably breathtaking. It gives us the last gasp of an old man, and a baby's first cry. It also doesn't care if we comprehend it or not.
Dougly - I agree.
Being out in nature is church for me. Birds and bugs.
I believe in a Creator, whether that be science or magic doesn't matter for me.
As ygmir says, it works for me. Which I do believe is reason enough since it's supposed to be a personal relationship.
My church is also one of the places that I am mindful of the present.

I can conntrol my god, but I have seen his wrath when proper respect is not shown to him.
I know that my god will take care of me when I die, and I respect him for all of his power and beauty.

And I always wonder about people who have to question & mock others beliefs- I see it happen from the die-hard Atheists as well as the super-religious (Dawkins, anyone?) To me the need to deny someone else's belief always seems to show a weakness in your own. I don't care how others believe as long as they don't use them to legislate how I must act & think- something that is done all too often.
I study history and am fully aware of the evils done in the name of religion. I am also aware of the beauty created in the name of god(s). I am fully aware of the evils done by atheists as well, but I don't see as much beauty being created by them- yet.
Active (open) atheism is still quite young in the scheme of things, and brings it's own baggage to the table. Most of the really vocal atheists I know are acting against religion more than they are towards their own (lack?) of beliefs. I also know many who are very quiet and fulfilled about it and don't see the need to question anybody else.
Even a large number of scientists are religious- just because you believe there is "something more" doesn't mean you lack the ability to reason- it means you have the ability to imagine.

Yes, there is beauty. and things that are beautiful are beautiful for solidly logical reasons. And I don't know what you are referring to when you say "defies logic." You're not just "asking a question". You're challenging people for believing differently than you. Why are you so insecure in your beliefs that you can't allow people theirs?
There is a big difference between trying to understand what people believe & to learn and grow from that and just challenging everything that doesn't agree with your beliefs.

I just believe because I do. That's like asking why I do burning man.
OK, maybe doing the Burn is a little less esoteric than that. But seriously. That's why I do. Why do you love?
The funny thing is... people somehow equate "God" and "Religion" with "Judeo-Christianity"... what did people do 10000 years ago, before either of those (Judaism and Christianity, or even Zoroasterism, which begat them) existed? we KNOW people had a belief system... we also suspect they had a concept of a deity (or deities). To me... well... I can't tie the 2 together. *The* Deity (however or whatever it is) and a specific offshoot religion.
It's as if someone started a religion around, I dunno... Burning Man. And in 6500 years it was the only common forbearer of, heck, the whole JudeoChristian Tthing... and all the others (like most religions before) have faded to myth... would that mean al those other deities didn't exist either? Just curious...
BUT... as long as we're being curious...
------
We had an interesting conversation the other day. What if... the essence of life, being a chemical and carbon base... is Oil? I mean, it has all the building blocks to make life, in certain circumstances it is reactive... hell, even fire is said to be alive, and life is said to be a combustion process of sorts...
Theorem. Oil exists here. Life exists here. Neither is presently known to exist on other planets.
Now this is awful simple... but aren't all truths simple? Which leads to the following - We burn oil. What if it were put here to generate life? What if by burning it up we're killing off the planet - quite literally?
Maybe that's the secret - that oil is the literal lifeblood of the planet?
Now... to expand on that... who put the oil there? Was it God? Maybe. Maybe God is some group of Geoligical Offering Decoction... where they make this chemical stew, and send (or sent) it into space to land on planets, coating it, to see what happened?
Maybe not... who knows... but if you follow the general theist theory that God Is... meaning everywhere, everything, everywhatnot, is of God, ois a product of God... and pretty much all we see (with the exception of certain geologic rock formations which are the core rock of this planet) is a product or byproduct of a few billion years of this life stuff, from trees to dino bones to the dirt to youse and meese...
And life is a byproduct reaction of a long-ago chemistry experiment of the right amount of radiation and the right amount and type of atmospheric and geologic chemistry...
trails...

I believe in an unseen something. A force, a sentience, an activation energy outside myself. My puny human self calls it God. There was something I needed to do, that through numerous attempts was proved impossible for me to to do. I asked for help, and then I was able to do it. Whether it was a trick of my mind, or not, either way it doesn't matter to me. It is my experience, and I call it belief. It's personal, not something I need to defend, or wish upon others.
