It's most likely a Gullah folk song that become popular during the folk revival of the 60's.gyre wrote:Is Cumbaya actually a song, or just a joke?

Anyone knocks Joan Baez and I will hunt them down and injure them. I love Joan Baez, and she one of the nicest "celebrities" I've ever met.
edit: you can mock "kumbaya" all you want...

Jeezus, I'm embarassed to admit I actually liked some of these songs. Especially the old Dr. Demento songs. At least no Tom Lehrer songs were nominated. Yet. But we will have a piano at Barbie Death Village this year and I am learning again how to play The Vatican Rag, Poisoning Pigeons In The Park, The Old Dope Peddler, The Masochism Tango, The Hunting Song, Werner Von Braun, The MLF Lullaby, and of course Be Prepared. I can sing The Elements but just can't play it on the piano.
But can you play Lehrer's "Smut"?Jeezus, I'm embarassed to admit I actually liked some of these songs. Especially the old Dr. Demento songs. At least no Tom Lehrer songs were nominated. Yet. Savannah, yes Smut , Folk Song Army, and Pollution are also three that I know. I have The Tom Lehrer Song Book and Tom Lehrer's Second Song Book (autographed by him when I met him at a cocktail mixer in Sacramento many years ago, but I digress) and have to decide which ones to put my efforts into. I had the sheet music for I Got It From Agnes but it seems to be missing somehow. No matter. I almost certainly know how to play on the piano more Tom Lehrer songs than, I'm willing to bet, anyone else on the playa. Which then begs the question: Anybody up for a Tomlehreroff? I state that I am now, as of March 16th, the official champion. C'mon you johhny-come-latelys, try and knock me off my self-proclaimed throne.
