when people ask me what kind of music I like my response is

'only the good kind'

I had a hard time with jazz while in school because all of these 'cats' who were studying jazz were all apeing the radical free shit. Problem was they did not know how to play. So, it took some time away from that environment to really be able to appreciate some good jazz. I will say this, I heart Bill Evans.

We sang at the Lionel Hampton Jazz fest a bunch of years ago. Had chances to sit in on some pretty good master classes. Talked to Dee Danials a bunch. ellis marsalis....

Ray Brown was amazing. My friend got lesson with him. We walked into Dimitrou's and he said 'i'm gonna get me a lesson with Ray Brown' And he did.

i'm still a sucker for Ella after all of these years.

de-phazz does this remake of 'Wait Till You See Him' with the original EF vocal. God Damn if it's not the best track I heard that entire year. The superlicious, ultra smart production on top of the untouched vocal gives me chills, gives me pause, then gives me tears.

i think my one of my favorite jazz memories was at the blue note in new york sitting smack in front of Fourplay. It was one of those perfectly lovely experiences where the musicians and the audience are absorbed in each other.

after it was over, one of them came up and thanked my for the smiles. hell, i i couldn't help it. i can hardly stay in my seat.

anyone bringing jazz on playa?

Yow! You all have gotten me fired up to put on some music. Maybe when the baby wakes up she'll have to grove to a little Stanley Turrentine's Blue Hour - on vinyl. Amazing player.

And once you've done that, why not go out and find your Squirrel Name?

I wasn't going to say anything about this, but... Remember the 'Space Ball' a few weeks back? That was the Flight to Mars fundraiser at the Seattle Center. Good times. They had several bands, of course, but here's the thing: the lead guitarist (and sometimes sax player) for one band was wearing, you guessed it, a squirrel costume. I couldn't tell if he looked more like Chip or Dale; it was that was fuckin' spooky. I couldn't take my eyes of that damned squirrel! Especially after he started playing his guitar through a talk-box like Peter Frampton. I'm tellin' you, it was very disturbing. I think the fuckers may be trying to learn to speak!
