Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
As an adviser rather than an active moderator, I think I can open this can of worms. I would like some input from the eplayans on what comprises a personal attack, where to draw the line with name calling, and which would be a better option: editing for content or public chastisement?
We do need personal attacks to cease, but we also need free range speech. Any ideas of how to accomplish this dual goal?
And yes, Simon, I just stole your thread. Thank you!

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
This board is enjoyable & informative because of the multitude of personalities that frequent it. All of them. Every single last one of them. I wouldn't trade a single one of any of the users on here no matter how I personally feel about what it is they have to say or how they say it. Even in their minor annoyances, there isn't a single person on here that I wouldn't sit down and say fuck yer day to while passing them a root beer float.neon tetra wrote:But when you have people like Simon & a few others, it becomes "their" playground. It becomes a place for all of their mental problems & their obvious need for constant attention. Which is fine, but not when it gets in the way of an otherwise enjoyable & informative board.
Even you!

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
i think a Bakunist methodology might be the best....if collectively, something appears over the line, the other eplayans will let that person know, and respond accordingly, therefore insuring that the STANDARD will be based on the community, and not some town in Iowa.
public shame works great, especially to those that value the Burning Man Community.
if someone is about to be stoned for no reason, i am quite certain that there will be somebody, if not many who stand up and demand that those with glass houses had better be ready to be judged for R- Value.
yeah, how's that for a mixed metaphor?
anyway, as yogi berra said, "i knows it when i sees it" and i trust the eplayans to do the same.
when this does not work, and only then, this is when the deux-a machina of the Mods should step in.

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
This gets tricky, I think, because people's understanding of a personal attack vary. And people's feelings of being personally attacked vary just as much. By that I mean, some of us are hypersensitive and some of us have extremely thick skin.AntiM wrote:As an adviser rather than an active moderator, I think I can open this can of worms. No comment on "free speech", or whether Simon raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.
But I do have a new avatar for his consideration:

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
I don't see how Simon's "stripper" comment, was a personal attack.
yeah, if someone says things about another, of a personal nature, like looks, disabilities, social status, gender, sexual deviations or, pudding preference, yeah, bad form. Ask em not to.
But, just being "offensive", seems part of the charm, here....off color, biting, derogatory stuff happens.
Of course, anything to do with personal info, addy and such, take off of the public view.
But, jeeze.........as off color as that statement was, it was not in any way (IMHO) slap worthy from a Mod.
Yeah, TG came back, with a statement, and, it was right, and well said.
And, others may well have come to her defense. Maybe not. Either way, I don't see the need to get involved from a Mod standpoint, in something such as that.
We can be, and usually are, self regulating. If someone is totally off base, one or more others usually call them on it, and, all is worked out.
No Big Brother, for me, thanks.

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
I'm in agreement with SotP. We don't need no nanny censoring. The huge majority of active players on this board are of legal age, aka grown adults, and if somebody can't take another’s snark, well, sorry for ya...grow some skin, or make a witty reply, or bail from the board. Nobody is forced to be here, but to be here people have to understand that it's not all hippy rainbow, unicorn, laughing forest, love, Namaste blah...It'll be sad if this board is censored to that point.
besides the fact that the censorship seems to be selective, since I just read a totally unrelated topic, where somebody said "you're a fucking dumbass" (or something very close to that) isn't that a personal attack? was that person not censored because it wasn't aimed at a newbie?
But, at the same time, I think the newberators are still in their learning curve though.

Not that I'm sayin' I do, but I'd probably be lurkin' for another 3 months before pokin' my head out.Bounce530 wrote: But, at the same time, I think the newberators are still in their learning curve though.

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
If this was about *that* thread, I thought our Iowa representative took a mild jab gracefully in stride. "Open Discussion" should not require the same pietous decorum as the rest of the eplaya.

Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
One goal is to have a useful board, where information is exchanged. In some forums, this has almost been reached, especially now Trilo has gotten the Q&A into sub-topics (something I could not do). I always considered Open Discussion to be fair game, as long as no one started user specific threads and flame wars were suppressed (hell, mine got deleted if anyone recalls). Still, if the eplaya were a BMORG volunteer, we'd be the DPW on a bender.Bounce530 wrote:I'm in agreement with SotP. We don't need no nanny censoring. Re: LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
And do remember, the board may seem like a democratic community, but it is not. Ultimately, eplaya is a tool of the BMORG, and has to follow the rules. Our freedom of speech here may seem open and free, in reality, it is limited. Never forget that little detail. I know I space it out of my mind now and then; it is easy to forget we are not autonomous here.
