I remember one of those rounds of the "Only people with American accents should teach English in our schools" movements. Some guy from Boston wrote in to the New York Times to object to that line of thinking, saying that when he was in elementary school back in the 50s, his Boston born-and-bred teacher used the following words as examples of homophones:
Orphan
Often
Orphan
Often

And can we please dispense with the word whilst?

Re: It's all about how you say it.
This is my favorite map of American English Dialects. The only thing that drives me crazy (as someone who grew up in the Southwest & now lives in SF) is that the map-maker assumes "Don" and "Dawn" are pronounced differently, while to me they're pronounced the same (D-ahn). I can't figure out how they would be pronounced any other way.
Large scale map (ie: legible) is on the site. Click the link or the image.
Prepare yourself, it's fucking technical insanity, with links to native regional speakers. Oh, for me:
Woost-a-sheer
May-o (who says the "naise" bit?)
keh-chup
Nahlins
vi-tamins
que-pon
Es-pla-nod (short "a" at the end - does not rhyme with lemon-aid)
All-monds

Moved from L.I. to Cleveland when I was 3. Not long after, I remember being downtown and ordering a soda and the woman behind the counter asked me what kind of ice cream I wanted. Quite possibly the most confused I have ever been.Eric wrote:As an added bonus - it's "soda", not "pop"\

I used to teach ESL, a lot would depend on the parent language. I worried less about accent, and more about communication basics, and when warranted, written academic skills. You never know your own language well until you attempt to teach it.
