I remember one of those rounds of the "Only people with American accents should teach English in our schools" movements. Some guy from Boston wrote in to the New York Times to object to that line of thinking, saying that when he was in elementary school back in the 50s, his Boston born-and-bred teacher used the following words as examples of homophones:

I so agree. I live in CA , but in Nevada City, Nevada county.

This is my favorite map of American English Dialects. The only thing that drives me crazy (as someone who grew up in the Southwest & now lives in SF) is that the map-maker assumes "Don" and "Dawn" are pronounced differently, while to me they're pronounced the same (D-ahn). I can't figure out how they would be pronounced any other way.

English - honetly and no I don't understnad everythin Geordies say and use the eyebrow technique.

What is the eyebore techniques, well for startes it's good for Scotts and the irish too and you watch eyebrows :
Up = good - nod and agree
Down = bad - shake head make noises of disapproval
no movement = unsure shrug noncomittaly or run away

I used to teach ESL, a lot would depend on the parent language. I worried less about accent, and more about communication basics, and when warranted, written academic skills. You never know your own language well until you attempt to teach it.

l have a friend from high school who lives near Columbia, Missouri. That's Missouruh, as opposed to Missouree.

l get the chills when l here someone say Neh vah duh, like they do on the Weather Channel. How Jen Carfagno said "Ee lie, Nehvahduh was -41 this morning" in one sentence was beyond me, as opposed to Ely

, this past winter.
