I'm going to be a pirate for Hallowe'en. I just picked up an old brown leather coat to make some leggings from. Yes. Should be good. Need to find a pirate name. And a sword.

For those of you for whom one day will never be enough, try this

the sidebar missed my favorite (with the possible exception of Stevenson's ur-text) Pirate Novel.

(Powers has written some other killer books, including one on Las Vegas.

Tell me how you say this one: Ymir

It's my new town, and unless you are from around here or are familiar with Norse mythology, you probably don't know how to say it. Or spell it.

Oh, my guesses would be:

-War-ches-ter

-Beaut as in beauty, although I prefer butt

-La Jol-a jol as in doll. Probably not right. My other guess, if it's in the south (close to Mexico...I don't know where it is) would be La Joy-a

Well, my metric goes by the greatest number of mispronounced (or dropped) syllables. Arbitrary? Probably.

What should be pronounced wor-chest-er is woo-sta.

La-Joll-a is just La-hoy-a, and at least makes sense in Spanish.

Dunno about Butte... "butt" ?? "byoot" ?

Ymir ("eee-mere" ??) is beyond me.

Anyway that's how I see the world. YMMV. :-)
