for the rest of us that didn't know what ayurveda was...

Post by Simply Joel » Tue Feb 01, 2005 12:06 pm

Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद Sanskrit: ayu—life; veda—knowledge of) or ayurvedic medicine is a more than 2,000 year old comprehensive system of medicine based on a holistic approach rooted in Vedic culture. Its conspicuous use of the word veda, or knowledge, reveals its role in early Hinduism and describes its hallowed place in India. Ayurveda also had a tradition of surgery. Two early texts of Ayurveda are the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita.

The Charaka and Sushruta Samhitās are compendiums of two traditions rather than texts authored by single authors. A third tradition is that of the Kāshyapas. The scholarly traditions of ayurveda date back to the time of the Buddha, whose died (mahaparinirvana) in approximately [[[400 BCE]]. Some plant remedies of ayurveda are mentioned in the earlier Vedic literature 2nd millennium BC, but the formal doctrines of the three humours and other key ayurvedic ideas are first mentioned in the Buddhist Canonical literature. Both the Sushruta and Charaka Samhitās are the product of several editorial hands, having been revised and supplemented over a period of several hundred years.

The scholar Vāgbhata, who lived in Sind at the beginning of the 7th century AD, produced a grand synthesis of earlier ayurvedic materials in a verse work called Ashtānga Samhita. Another work associated with the same author, the Asthanga Samgraha, contains much the same material in a more diffuse form, written in a mixture of prose and verse. The relationship between these two works, and a third intermediate compilation, is still a topic of active research. The works of Caraka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata are considered canonical and reverentially called the Vriddha Trayi, "the triad of ancients"; or Brhat Trayi, "the greater triad." In the early eighth century, Mādhav wrote his Nidāna, a work on etiology, which soon assumed a position of authority. In the 79 chapters of this book, he lists diseases along with their causes, symptoms, and complications.

The vast majority of Ayurvedic therapies are herbal compounds. Some alchemical preparations start to enter the ayurvedic pharmacopieia towards the end of the 1st millennium AD in works such as those of Ugraditya (8th century AD)and Sarngadhara (14th century AD). It also provides therapies for the treatment of various vegetable and animal toxins like scorpion, spider and snake venom. It has a whole science of toxicology called agada-tantra as one of the eight branches of traditional Ayurveda.

The Ayurvedic idea is that the organism adapts to the environment and its food, climate etc. This principle of adaptation is called satyma. Through introducing small amounts of a food or medicine, the organism can adapt to it and learn to resist it.

Ayurveda became increasingly symptom-based, treating the symptoms of a disease rather than the root cause. However, it is important to note that Ayurveda was originally a consciousness based system of health care. Its philosophy, expressed in modern terms, is to strengthen the immune system.

Sure, monkeys don't eat bacon, but they also only live 40 years.

Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one!

I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, and I've never been into simulated meat products (i.e., "soy-sage", "tofu dogs", "to-furkey", etc.). It always seemed kind of silly to me. If you want to eat some meat, go for it; get the real thing. If you don't want to eat meat, then don't eat it; but why are there meat-free, yet meat-like, products for non-meat eaters? This don't make no sense.

Of course I have eaten most of this stuff, but I don't go the grocery store and think, "Oooh! Wow, look at this! This stuff is just like bacon, but it's not bacon! Awesome! I've got to have some!" I just think of it as soy products, that for some strange mysterious reason, has been made to resemble various bits and pieces of cut up critters.
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

Y'see, that's the way to go. I don't mind vegetarian food (I will deny this to my dying day SurlyTart- disclaimer: someone else wrote this using my machine) as long as it is FUCKING VEGETABLES. I would cook new things for my ex, as I love to cook, and she was a veg. I refused to use tofu or tempe. Instead, I would grill portabella - lightly basted with olive oil/garlic/pepper/basil for sandwhiches. I would create pastas with asparagus tips, pepper, Romano, and lemon lest. I would even abide eggplant when properly soaked in sea salt and water, then grilled after basted with lemon basil, olive oil, thyme, and a hint of balsalmic. I became creative and now some of the things are part of her favorite simple meal list. But nothing is trying to be something it isn't.

But tofu and its ilk have NO FLAVOR. Hint folks, if something has no taste- and you have to use other foods to give it flavor- then why are you eating it? There are enough things out there that ARE food. Soy beans have flavor, why are you doing weird things to them?

Ok, rant mode off. My tender gourmet sensibilities are offended by geletinous fermented soy squeezings.

I love how while eating at a vegan restaurant, it tasted 'good' and you enjoyed it.

Ever since then the quality of the Globe's offerings have become more and more insufferable, in your not so humble opinion.

Interesting.

Hey Rob, if i made you a shake with Bacon in it would you drink it? Hmmmm?

could slide if I had to doing vegetarian but no fuckin way for vegan. Without pasta the world would stop. Someone in another thread said you could not drink most wine because it was somehow processed with animal products as well. Without pasta the world would stop. Without pasta and wine the world would explode.

By "health food bacon" I was talking actual meat, but not factory farmed and not pumped full of preservatives.

OK, I'm ready to order now.

Yes, I'd like the grilled portabella sandwich - lightly basted with all that good shit that Rob puts on it. I'll also have a side of the asparagus pasta and one of the eggplant, once again with all the good shit. I'd also like a bottle of your finest Pinot Noir as well. I believe that should do it.

You did realize that you can get to Bacon on public transit from any town with only 6 changes of conveyance, didn't you?

New diet

Nine tribespeople who survived the December tsunami spent 38 days wandering through flattened villages on a remote Indian island, eating boars and coconuts, before police found them Wednesday.
Later in the artlcle they mention shoots too.
