Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
I accidentally stumbled across videos and material from the Flat Earth Society people.
I keep trying to tell myself it's all performance art, that they aren't really serious, but they sure sound like they believe it.
If you let yourself start thinking these people aren't doing very, very dry schtick, you very quickly get worked up and disgusted with how stupid people can be.
It's just chain-yanking, right?

The current issue of AutoWeek has a story on the refurbishing of Daytona Speedway, now approaching finished. A sidebar relates that the grandstand is almost a mile long, and the designers had to compensate for the curvature of the Earth to the tune of 7 inches.

Yeah, I saw that blog post... it's looking even more amazing than I imagined.
Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Looking at two of the illustrations, I wondered how they will keep him upright in the wind. But a third illustration shows an axle thru his middle, supported by an A-frame. That will take away quite a bit of the visual impact, but I still like it plenty.

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Oh that sounds awesome. I drove through there on my way across country when I moved out west in 2002. I didn't have very high expectations, I figured I'd pretty much drive straight through save for maybe hopping out for a quick photo opp at the lowest elevation point... but wow, that place was stunning and beautiful. The artists palette is possibly the most colorful and amazing geology I've ever seen above ground, and I think I wound up spending most of a whole day exploring. One of these days I'd like to get back.
Last night was nothing if not interesting. It started off wonderfully, I went in to HQ for a dinner with a bunch of folks from the tech team. There we talked about the ePlaya upgrade as well as a bunch of other technology projects that are going on, and on my way out I caught a glimpse of a couple of my art theme posters up on the wall. Getting home, I checked on the progress of a pet render project... a giant 1 gigapixel fractal. What is a gigapixel? Where 1 megapixel is 1 million pixels in the image, 1 gigapixel is 1,000 megapixels... or 1 billion pixels. In this case, the image resolution is 31,625 x 31,625. It was coming along nicely, just taking a while even on my beast of a computer. Then in the middle of the night, I awoke to the sound of gunshots - somebody was emptying a clip rather quickly. One of our two cats jumped out of her skin, and strangely enough the one who's normally afraid of everything barely flinched. We joked that it's because she's from Oakland (she was rescued off the streets of Oakland before we adopted her). Anyhow, finding myself suddenly wide awake I went upstairs and tried to look out for any signs of activity on the street. Within a minute, several cop cars turned up. None had their flashers on, but they all drove extremely fast and with a sense of purpose. Once they got to our corner, they started branching off and using searchlights to try and find someone skulking in the shadows. After combing our immediate area several times 6 cars came together across the street and the cops went out on foot with flashlights. After a good 20 minutes, there was some activity on the radio and they all piled back into their cars. 2 went slowly up the freeway ramp, and the others headed back in the direction of the station. With the excitement over I headed back to bed, noticing that the render had finally finished. I'll flight check it sometime later today when I get a chance. I don't have a very regular sleep schedule to begin with, but last night's excitement definitely threw me off - I need a nap!

The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.

Hello (((((((((all))))))))))) I am happy to be at my favorite bar on a Saturday night.
I am thinking that lots of our friends are at a party in Reno, and wishing they would post some pix.
*pours a round*
BeeWeeDee, congratulations!

And now we take you to Reno Nevada with this late-breaking bulletin.
Filling in for Sven Svenson who is busy at the moment in his garage, is your reporter, Kerry Kincaid.

Good evening, I'm Kerry Kincaid, filling in for Sven Svenson who is busy at the moment out in his garage. Earlier today the Amtrakathon arrived in Reno Nevada amid widespread celebration.

There are reports of crowds of people gathering downtown and mass hysteria as the excitement was building toward their arrival.

We hope to receive further updates as they become available.

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
Woohoo for Amtrakathonians, new campmates, and bay lights!!! Burning Man's very own Dave X killed it in the fireworks department, they fired off 4 barges of 'em for the event (even more than were used for the golden gate 75th anniversary, I think). It's good to have the lights back on the bridge at night, it's a great piece of art and feels like it fits the city beautifully. Thank you, Blinky!
I hope everyone's having a good weekend - cheers!
