diphthong ... what an excellent word ... don't bother with hawaiian or other pacific languages .
adding new meaning, or not, to "you can ring my bell..."

in Fijian they don't write two consonants together. I had difficulty with the consonants that had between/combined sounds. 'B" sort of has a soft m sound at the beginning. The missionaries when writing the language assigned the letter Q to the sound of ng... like si"ng" Try starting a word with that sound. Qamea. The letter C represents a TH sound. I saw a tv travelogue yesterday on the town I lived in... the host didn't even try to pronounce things correctly. He asked what copra was used for, and his "guide" said, ice cream. I love Fijian humor. The guy didn't do any research, and I bet he thinks copra makes ice cream. It also points back to what little we actually know about a place from such a cursory examination. And yet that information may one day be the only reference.

hey everyone............

well, back up after a quick little sleep............

I went to the Camp Isparatum decom party last night in Sac.

What fun........sevral art cars, fire displays, fire spinning, a fashion show........free flowing liquor...........

it had it all..........and, above all, wonderful people............

thanks so much to CI (and, Doc Pyro, who "invited" me), for great night.......

and, as I was being the clever, witty ( at least half), and socially appropriate fellow that I am, I now apologize to several folks..........

I even got hit up by a couple of seeming "frat boys", carrying empty liquor bottles, looking for "E".......hahaha, until they said "E", I didn't know what they were talking about..........and then they waddled off.......

*edit for frat boy story*
*and then spellign*

He wrote a novel called The Last Days of Pompeii. If sure it was the usual victorian silliness. I guess the main characters become christians.

Maybe that's why Finntroll sings in Swedish.

i find that interesting ... i agree that we can't really know what it was like, but ... for a scholar to say that? it almost undermines her profession, i think. why study things if we can't really understand them, anyhow?

i'm not criticizing, just musing over this.

i've always loved this terry gilliam bit:

i hope you make it to pompeii, pinemom ... it is fascinating. italy is a blast, a fun, crazy, gorgeous place.

fiji, elorrum? i would love to hear more about that! what were you doing in fiji?

Hey all!

she's a cutie

Anyway, just finished chores and am sitting here with a glass of wine, but the wine bottle is empty. OTOH the sake bottle is pretty full, so I'll be switching a bit later. Can I interest anyone?
It's going to be alright.

Well, we can know somethings. A lot of what she was complaining about is poor archeology. For instance there are three buildings in the Pompeii Forum that are believed to be temples of the Imperial Cult. One of them has a statue of Augustus, so that's alright. ONe is completely empty, not clue as to what it was for, or what happened there. Somebody made up a story because they wanted to have something to say about that building. And there's just oodles of that crap going on. Did Pompeii have more than 150 brothels? Did Pompeii have just one brothel? And her question is more like "How was prostitution practiced in Pompeii?" I'm not explaining it well, but it really is a good book.

i almost bought that book several months ago, but decided to save my money ... now i wish i had. pretty amazing stuff. there was a brothel in pompeii that was part of the tour, they had paintings, pictures of various positions, all around... and stone beds that were very small! amazing stuff.

those phallus things were apparently all over the place ... they believe they were believed to keep evil spirits away ... but that may just be an example of someone's imagination.

i wonder if sputnik finished the sake yet ...

I wonder what they drank in Pompeii? Probably wine.

Back home now from my adventures in Woodstock. Time to prepare for Canadian Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. Turkey with the fixings, pumpkin pie. Spiced cider to drink.

Definitely wine. Often mixed with water. Cause that was water you didn't want to drink "neat."

Hmmm.

Brothels in Pompeii....sounds about right...but sexuality was so much more open in that era...there really wasnt anything taboo about homosexuality...you just loved.
