Got any ideas for website hosting?
Geocities is closing down.
Do you all like GoDaddy? I maintained a site through them for a while, takes a while to climb through all the ads to get to the place where you can edit content. That's a crazy waste of time, I shouldn't be looking at that many ads if I already paid for product.

Any good sites for web hosting?

I've been on GeoCities 10+ years. No idea they were closing up shop, maybe because I abandoned using Yahoo's crappy email years ago. Have a free site parked at sites.google.com, but haven't uploaded anything.

Fuck the web, I should just sell my content in dirty comix via craigslist.

I may just go back to scribbling on bathroom stalls.

The sites that try to make it "friendly" for non-HTML users sometimes make it unfriendly for HTML users.

I use goDaddy for my "vanity" web site. I don't use their tools, I just make up the HTML and use FTP to maintain my site (I always have an image of it on my computer). It's crude but effective.

For pix I also have an account on Flickr. Also pretty low overhead, no fancy image effects.

This is kinda interesting;

05/24/09 - Musopen - free out of copyright music
Musopen created a warehouse for music with expired copyrights. With that, it contains mostly classic music from the past centuries. "We want to give the world access to music without the legal hassles so common today. There is a great deal of music that has expired copyrights, but almost no recordings of this music is in the public domain. We aim to record or obtain recordings that have no copyrights so that our visitors may listen, re-use, or in any way enjoy music. Put simply, our mission is to set music free." When you enter the site you first need to select a way to access the music collection. As (regular) music, sheet music or shuffle. Shuffle will give you a random piece. Selecting music as your point of access, you can browse by composer, performer, instrument, period and form, then play the respective tunes or download them. Using sheet music you can browse available music sheets by composer, instrument, period, form or instructional type and view the sheets with Scribd’s iPaper. - Source
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

another question for you -

I have a shit tone of files that are duplicates and they are scattered everywhere.

Same files or pics, or music in different locations.

Is there a utility in Vista to remove duplicate files? between restoring this laptop and erroneous movemements I bet I have 25 GB of duplicates - really muddles up the works.

you guys rule - thanks again fer your help.

Here ya go

http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+remove+duplicate+files

Although I cannot comment on any of the programs since I have not used them. I suggest you always backup everything before doing a deletion. And remember, deleting files is how you fragment your drive, if you delete alot, defrag after.,,,

any IT pros in the house?

Post by Bluemandrew » Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:53 am

So I've been tasked with becoming the security expert at the small consulting business I work for. Actually "in house hacker" was a term bandied about.

The head cheese is big on certifications, but there's something like 10,000 security certs to choose from. I currently have just a Vista cert, but I'm really not a M$ kind of guy. I'm the linux guy at the office too, but we're mostly a M$ house. (Gold partners actually, fwiw)

What does anyone recommend for a security cert? Hopefully something I can get quickly, and then one that's actually worth getting.

What certs do you currently hold. That should guide you on what your road map will be. Path your training to match your customers needs. Training in your business in ongoing, ever changing and never ending.

Between Hp, Compaq, Apple, Microsoft, Novell, Citrix..etc I had a bunch (embarassed to think how many)

The head cheese is big on certifications
(head cheese...oooooh, kinda like toe jam) tell him I said that!! :)

Well, I currently only have a Vista cert. My boss had originally wanted me to move down the MSCE path, but during a conversation Friday decided that Microsoft is not really my gig. Awesomely enough though, my boss is cool with that. We're a Microsoft gold partner, but I've been given the official/unofficial title of "Alternative Technology Expert" -I'm a linux guy, and get stuck with anything that Microsoft doesn't make.

That being said, most of our customer networks are MS-centric, and usually Cisco firewalls. Boss doesn't want me to do Cisco either though, since we have a Cisco guy already.

I was thinking about keeping my security certs vendor neutral. I should probably start with Security+ since it's the most common, but I'm supposed to end up doing pen-testing in the not so distant future, so I'm not sure if that's the right way to go.

I went for the 4 year networking degree option when I graduated high school. Didn't learn much except how to drink and convince teachers who weren't as smart as me to pass me with shitty grades though. I wish I had gone for some certs instead- I'd be making a bunch more money lol

There is a special hammer for hitting the any key. In a pinch you can use any available hammer. Sledge hammers seem to work quite well.

low tech guestion:

If I flush out methanol barrell with water then allow to air dry, can I then use it for water storage ? I'm concerned the old wood alcohol residue will poison me. Will plain water breakdown alcohol or just dilute it ?

I was gifted two 55 gal. methonol barrells. I can use one for gasoline, but I'm wondering if I can use the other to haul potable water.

Anyone out there use recycled methanol barrells ?

Steel drums, on second thought I'm not going to risk it. I'll use the blue one to hold graywater from my washing machine. nonpotable...

I'll haul the black one on my trailer for gasoline. I still need to find a handpump and hose to refuel my Geo. I dont need to carry smaller gascans, just one big one centered over my trailer axle. I'll need to screw down some 2x4's as sliding stops on my trailer deck and rig chain tiedowns. Tying down camp gear around it will help secure it also.

53 mpg X 55 gallons = 2,915 miles 8lbs./gal X55 gallons = 440 lbs

$3.00 X 55 gallons = $165.00 or $0.05660377 / mile

My internet connection was really slow these past few days. Normally a 11 to 15 mbps connects slowed to 500 bps. Most likely from visiting a lot of sites that open scripts and add them to your registry.

This might be happening to you.

A simple resolution was to reset the browsers under Internet Options under tool for IE.

Worked like a charm and I'm back up to over 14mbps.

Now the browser is once again FAST!

Your Internet Host can give you a recommended site to check your connection speed.

Do you use you computer as a stand alone machine and not hooked up to other computers. What to speed it up without unnecessary services running in the background.

Disable both Workstation and Server services under Administrative Tools< SErvices.

Both are unnecessary and can be exploited.

And always disable UPNP service!

Sooooo... if you used Mozilla Firefox would your "internet connection" have been faster? The browser does not control the speed of your connection. It's all magic really

and I sure hope no website can edit my registry, all I take is cookies. (cause I like cookies)

I use archie as my browser, procomm to connect though a d battery conection.

The browser can open connections and that can slow down your internet. Firefox worries me since theyre mirrored sites have been hacked into during the past.

I'm noticing that I keep getting "logged out" while on eplaya......I'll try to post or search, after a fairly short "idle" time, and, it says I need to log in again. Sometimes, this is happening while I'm typing a post, even.

anyone know about this?

It screws up my "posts since previous visit" search feature.........

thanks

I don't know the dynamics of ppb but if you drop the connection you will be logged out. I doubt if anything else is going on. Have you tried another browser just to see?

http://www.mozilla.org/

I promise it will not hurt your machine.

if you wonder if your machine has things going on that might hurt it, press ctr, alt, del and go to task manager. google any tasks that you have questions about. If your machine is running bogus software you will see it here. a search will tell you what that task is doing. You can find out what the task is associated with and perhaps uninstall it.

so, what os are you running? Since the connection is dropped (my assumtion) while you are using Mozilla, have you tried IE?

Whats you connection to the internet? Firewall? Network? Wireless?? Antivirus, privacy, type stuff running>

It is probably all on your end. Perhaps a sleep function, when you are typing a message, it's as if the machine was idle.

and since dork said to check your computer time and date, change your time and date to something else just to see if that has an effect. Also can you predict when you will be logged out? 4 min 30 sec? 10 minutes??

(I found this on another forum. "Don't be embarrassed. There's a reason why checking your system clock/date is the first thing we suggest when there's a log-in problem.")

I'm hoping it'll be better today.......I did a "hard shutdown" last night, and, cussed at the machine......

hopefully, it's learned its lesson............

clock is correct, no "certain time" for time-out......I'm thinking I'm having an issue with the DSL outside my machine........couldn't get pages last night, but, could get email........

What you pulled the plug? thats not gonna fix anything. nor will the cussing, you'll just make the computer mad at you and it will get even.

my recommedation has always been to not let the computer sense your need. If it thinks you really need it, it will fuck with you.. so when you sit down act all nonchalant, whistle a little, pretend like what you are doing is not important, then it will work just fine.

Did you try IE?

here is a thread, sounds like your issue.

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1478395

and finally, did you change the clock ever?? not just check it but change the darn thing.. maybe don't go forward (explanation available), just set it back a couple times, then set it correctly. Mentioned in a lot of threads.

at the bottom of this page you are reading is the link for phpbb help.

Try a system restore from about a month ago.

When you log in, you are putting a checkmark in the little box that keeps you logged in, RIGHT ?
