This new public radio station 89.3 The Current. It's public radio and plays everything I just heard a Nirvana song covered by a jazz band, then it was some guy yodeling in bluegrass, now it's Leonard Cohen, and the other day I heard Dean Martin. This station fucking rules! Oh, and I'm listening to it on Winamp, cause it works a hell of a lot better than real player.

Look here if you wanna listen too: www.mpr.org

Is there any other way considering so many labels will not license for this?
any performance, live or canned, of a copyrighted work is covered via publishing royalties. The sampling and subsequent use of copyrighted works to create other works without consent is not.

So, me and BHA can get together and re-record the entire beatles catalog and sell it commercially without consent (we will have to pay royalties though).

Me and BHA, on the other hand, can not put out a mix album that contains previously recorded copyrighted work without prior consent of the owners of the work.

Radio, internet and otherwise, is supposed to pay publishing royalties to the artists for the use of their work in a commercial enterprise. Commercial venues of any stripe, be they retail, performance, sporting, etc., that use music as an enhancement of their environment must pay publishing royalties for use of the material. So, if you walk in to a gap and they are playing the latest r&b tracks the gap must pay for the use. If you are at a sporting event and they play 'we are the champions' they must also pay publishing for the performance.

I heard an amazing musician on NPR this weekend, but sadly left her name at home. Mozart/Beatles/punk influenced.

Sultry, bluesy ass R&B. Smoke is drifting out of the speakers just from the sax.

I just listened to "CSN" ("Dark Star" fuckin' rules!) and the classic "Crosby Stills & Nash" back to back last week while I was driving up to Virginia.

I have to say though, I have mixed feelings about Graham Nash's songs. Think about it - "Our House"? "Marrakesh Express"? [makes motion of sticking finger down throat]. Then again, "Cathedral", "Just a Song Before I Go", "Cold Rain" - not so bad [shrugs shoulders].
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

We're listening to Classic Rock in Xray today. (Don't know the artist) "Come On And Take A Free Ride"
(And one of the techs just gave me a Snidely Whiplash look, taking each side of his moustache and twisting them at the ends, asking me if I want a free ride....

How tempting...

Had the Sex Pistols ~ The Great Rock and Roll Swindle cranking in the truck on the way to and from some cold-water surfing today. The "Johnny B. Goode/Road Runner" cover is a thing of genius. Well, at least it rawks. Sid Vicious's "My Way" is pretty fucking amazing too.
