ha!
so we hooked up the stove.......all went so well:
179697_539911239377257_195442656_n.jpg
the fire was burning, the ovens heating, the smoker, smoking:
1013805_539911126043935_224712552_n.jpg
and then a sudden downdraft.....and of course, I have no chimney cap yet. So, just to show all things don't work right the first time:
1013708_539910989377282_68883506_n.jpg
needless to say, I gotta get a chimney cap, and do a little research into down drafts and chimney pipes.
As I looked at the terrain, in the direction of the wind, I could see how the strong winds today would "roll" and as they come up over the cliff on that side of the Hof, create a super downdraft, and go right down the chimney, smoke and all.
It wasn't a vortex coming from the wind going over the roof, it was (I'm convinced) just the way the wind rolls up that particular direction. It didn't happen every time the wind blew, but, when it did happen, it was coming the same direction.
and it was a damn impressive back draft!! fire even came out one of the air inlets once!!

dang, if only I were a chimney expert.
well, I'll learn fast......I hope.

With as much chimney as you have, I expected the opposite!

I though the draw would be like a blast furnace eating wood so fast that you would have to restrict the flow somehow.

Backdraft?

Off to acess the damage.

@ Yiggy: Looks like chimney on south or southwest side of Hof? Southwest wind flow builds pressure on that side of roof and with doors / windows open on other side of Hof creates vacuum as wind goes by. Sucking down the pipe. You probably need a longer pipe, to stick above the roof. And maybe a directional draft cap so that the wind always creates suction on the end of the pipe/chinmey/stack

thanks MS........well, you're welcome!!!

FJ: yeah, my thoughts, too.
as I went outside to see WTF! and scanned the topography, it seems the it's related. it's a very strong "downdraft", and directly related to wind speed.
and since the chimney pipe is at the edge, facing wind direction, it's not vortices spinning off the roof somehow (and a conical shaped roof shouldn't do that anyway), but more the wind "rolling" up the steep face of the hill.
I gotta do some wind chimney cap research.

yeah E.D. tried with all combinations of doors and windows open and closed, thinking of that venturi effect, all closed, all open, one side and then the other. seemed sort of random and related to specific wind direction and speed.

I am going to look into the "weather vane" style cap, that turns with the wind, creating vacuum on the down wind side.

Re: Work in Progress 2013

Been making little bits of progress here and there. I posted some pics over in my camp thread on recent progress. I'm up to 640 pieces cut on the project, another 60ish to go, and will hopefully get those knocked out this week. I also need to cut parts for a couple bike racks, but we'll see how that goes. After being cut, all the parts need to cleaned up with a router or sanded, then either get finished up with painting and clearcoat or just clear-coat. So even though it's almost "done" on cutting there's still a long road ahead.

Design-wise, I've finally gotten to the point where I'm able to start working on the designs for the various parts and trim. I've worked up a few dozen ideas, but will muck around some ideas to see what fits the themes I've got going for each of the panels. And in addition to the graphic elements, there are some bits that are essentially just words and phrases. But in cuneiform, which doesn't really have any easy way to translate.

I'm also getting to the point where I'm able to start thinking about my own contributions to our museum/visitor's center. Inspired by a word cloud graphic Bravo from the placement team put together, I wanted to make a physical version of the word cloud that people could hold in their hands on the playa (it seems like a fun piece to spark interactions and conversations). The one I've made has a camp name cloud on one side, and a description cloud on the other, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There are also a couple pieces I made for previous projects that I think will work really well with this, I need to get them out of storage and dial up a new paint job on one of them. Other campmates are also hard at work on their pieces, I've seen a few pics of what they're coming up with and I'm really blown away. Pandorra's also making progress on a washing-up station she's making for the kitchen. She decided that rather than using off-the-shelf funnels and pipe fittings for the drain, she's going to use the project as an excuse to hone her 3D printer skills, and make a custom piece or two for it.

Busy busy busy you are!
I'd love to see pics of Pandorra's 3D pieces when they're done! That technology fascinates me.
So many possibilities... they're even printing prostheses for people.

I recently built a small trailer for my car and I thought I'd show it to you all. I built it from scratch with new metal, five pounds of 7018 rod and a hitch and axle I had lying around. I cut the axle down to the correct width to track right behind the car and trued it up a little bit with a pipe bender. A fun but hurried project. I had to skimp on quality plywood and wait to paint it due to needing it for a vacation to Idaho but paint and good plywood can come later.

Ever considered a single wheel trailer for fuel economy?
They have other advantages if you can use one.

The directional cap is a good suggestion, Ygmir.

I seem to recall there were some potential drawbacks like excessive draw.

Still no cap at all in place now, correct?

nope, no cap in place,
I think it may be multiple issues, too.
I'm taking parts up to the Hofparty this weekend, and with all the brains that will be up there, I think/hope, we can solve the issue.

Nice one, Motz!

I had another busy day cutting parts at the workshop yesterday, then a run to the store to get more paint and clear-coat, plus a bunch of 2x3's for additional internal support on the Ziggurat. I'd rather err on the side of overkill and the structure be completely safe than risk anyone getting hurt (or me stressing out worrying about the remote chance). I'll get the pieces cut to size tomorrow after I finish with the big tools. Today my computer's chugging along working on a big-ass render while I work on other (non-playa) projects or maybe do a little painting if I get a breather. Tomorrow, if all goes to plan, I should complete cutting all the parts - the next couple months will be about painting and coating, plus of course all the other art.

The other night I got out of bed around 11pm due to a rare case of insomnia.
I went out to the shop and built a propane fired water feature; The Bucket-O-Fire.
It's basically a 1 PSI regulator on the tank to a needle valve going out to a loop of perforated tubing in the bottom of a bucket of rocks filled with water.
The silicone tubing is for prototyping only, will be upgraded to the good stuff.
BoF01.jpg
It's a nice little campfire or tabletop heater. It heats the water up real nice like :)
Thinking of twisting up a heat exchanger coil to use the wasted heat to warm dishwater or bathing water on the playa.
Also could be an adjunct to the evap system (clean cooler meltwater).

The guts are simple:
BoF techview01.jpg
I'll be working on a bigger one soon. Thinking of an old washtub or even a washing machine drum...
