nice bar BVB, thanks!
12 days with no power, internet or much cell reception.
we had an unexpectedly heavy, wet snow storm, knocked pretty much the whole county off line and out of electricity.
glad I was prepared....

At times like that, isn't it wonderful to be able to go to our burner bins for all the lights and cooking stuff? Before the Burn, I already had all those things, but just not quite as organized.

Hey Patsh, nice to see you! Glad you like the bar decor. Hope things are going well out your way.

...and I noticed that I hadn't seen you stopping by lately ygmir, and knew there was a lot of snow out there, but didn't put it together. Huzzah for self reliance!

We got our first snow of the season today. Just two or three inches, but pretty cold too. I wouldn't mind, but it slows progress on outdoor projects.

Hi BVB!
The wonderful bar you made us, well, I nominate you as official "barkeep"!
Bar threads have a lot of history, and some controversy, over their history.
I sorta "broke in" having a ton of fun on the bar thread of the moment, and when "the great split" occurred, on both.
The plethora of accoutrements that have appeared over the years, was fun, too.
The characters, discussions, arguments, jokes and romances that have evolved and been introduced are legend.
There are pure golden posts at times, and some poignant missives and responses, from dear patrons who've crossed the veil.
Some took their toys and went home, too....
Anyway, thanks so much for what you did, and the reminder this is a good spot to sit.

*wanders in, starts ECM*
Hiya BVB, thanks for opening up!
we had a "snowpocalypse" a couple of weeks ago, now, temps in the mid 60's and sunny, for the near future. the plants are confused....
Sure was a wake up, for many people. Many live insulated, feeling comfortable is reliable electricity, natural gas/propane, fuel, open roads, internet and phones (cell and hard wired).
They had no backup, even though it's common knowledge that here in "the hills", things can go sideways.
Most were new immigrants from urban areas, who moved "to the country", for a myriad of reasons.
But, are lulled into false confidence, by "city life". Many had no tools or skills to deal with issues. Chainsaws, alternate heat, like fire wood, water source, or stored food. Many lost a lot of food, because they didn't think of putting stuff out in the snow to keep cold, or, filling the bathtub with snow and putting their stuff in it.
Power is almost fully restored now, but it's been 16 days for some, and most were out for at least 6 days.
I don't write this to disrespect those folks. Most, just had no clue, and no education related to these things.
And imagine if you have an electric car and the grid is down....tough to store some cans of electricity or go get a can from the neighbor. Let alone if you are stuck in said EV in a snow caused highway shutdown, which can last for hours, in frigid conditions.
I hope it's a good wakeup, for folks to "be prepared", for natural and human caused calamity, that can isolate individuals and communities for days and weeks.

wow, crickets. Anyone around?
We've gone from 30" of wet snow, to spring. narcissus, are coming up, camelias are making a few blooms, and grass is sprouting everywhere.
I sure hope winter is not over. We need a big one to catch up on water reserves.

:coffee:

Hi yg!

Yeah, things here in the bar sure are a lot quieter than days of yore.

Winter has set in here. It must be unsettling to have plants blooming out there this time of year. What were they thinking anyhow? I hope you get more rain/snow of some kind soon.

And to your point about electric cars, they do seem to have a few inherent flaws in their nature. I read that there are quick charge types of devices that a road service like AAA could provide, but I don't know just how viable that is practically speaking. And that does nothing in a 'stuck in a blizzard' situation. I'm pretty clueless about electric vehicles though; perhaps someone else more knowledgeable would have more insight. I read an article a day or two ago where Elon basically wants to take almost all human interaction out of 'the car', and in that pursuit, sees human input as unnecessary and an error in the system. 'The car' should know better.

Meh... As for me, thanks, but no thanks. I still see my vehicles as tools and fun conveyances, not babysitters.

In fairness, parts of his vision probably have merit within a big city commuter framework.

In an interview I saw a few months ago, he (Elon) suggested that gasoline driven cars will become the equivalent of how horses were seen soon after the Model T (and other automobiles of the time) became prevalent. They will still be around, but more for novelty and fun rather than utility. Time will tell I guess.

Meanwhile, here, I'm making some shop infrastructure improvements as time allows, one step at a time I suppose. Currently building some more custom shelves. You can never have enough horizontal space to put things on it seems.

...not to say that there isn't a need to move away from burning fossil fuels recklessly. I think that it's an imperative to do that. Just that there currently remains issues to resolve as the transition takes place. Meanwhile, I, personally, want a vehicle that offers me control, rather than it trying to know what I want at any given moment. If I want to dry out my gloves using the defroster on the dashboard, I want to be able to do so with a simple flick of a switch, not roam around a menu to override it's sensors, for example.

HI BVB!
yeah, I agree about the electrics. Perhaps one day, the battery technology will be such that they can run for very long extended periods, and or, charge fast(er). At that time, maybe internal combustion engines will not be as necessary. I chuckle, though, thinking about the long off road camping trip in the electric SUV, and carrying a generator and fuel, so you can re-charge after an all day drive to your spot...
Good for you, shelves are always great to have!

on EVs
https://hackaday.com/2022/01/19/longer- ... e-horizon/
https://jalopnik.com/getting-stuck-in-a ... 1848393538

The snow storm bit is interesting. ICE vehicles stuck in that recent storm were left at huge lines to get gas once that clog got unstuck. EVs were few enough that they had no problem - and enough charge left despite heating themselves during the clog - getting to an available charging station. Stories out of the Texas Freeze where people could run things in their car off its power. Others were left with an EV that couldn't get charged and couldn't go anywhere. Newer EVs with larger ranges/battery-packs are starting to offer high current sockets for using it's power for your house, camp, etc..

For an EV as daily driver, there's an angle I hadn't thought about that people are reporting. With charging at home overnight with enough range for your daily tasks, they no longer have to drive to, or go out of their way for, or stop at a gas station. Takes that trip/stop out of their tasks. And significantly less time lost, compared to taking an ICE vehicle for maintenance. (This last one is going to be a disruptor for dealership revenues. In some places, dealers are marking up to doubling or tripling the cost of replacement battery packs to cover that...)

A friend who lives well out of town went to an Air Source Heat Pump for central heating & A/C from propane furnace & a window A/C, ditched the propane water heater, stove & oven to electric, and ditched the ICE sedan for a Volt hybrid that he charges at home (plus one to two tanks of gas a year - covers a not quite enough battery range for his round-trip commute in winter with heat use). So he lost the propane bill and the gas commute bill. His electrical bill went up, to a total that is less than what his gas commuting bill was. Plus he lost the ICE sedan's maintenance costs.

Currently, going long distance to BRC by EV would be a pain. And risky. Although there are a few in Australia running around in EVs with trailers with extra batteries or diesel generators for those long trips. Still a pain. And cost.

Hi Canoe
I wish we could still link youtubes, I always liked coming in and watching a cartoon on Saturday mornings. sigh.
We're having a pretty good "wind event" here at the moment. With all the trees down and or weakened from the last snow storm, I'm hoping we don't lose a bunch more and lose grid power. again.
