The Wall Street Journal had a nice article about it some months back. Over the years they have had to change toes. Once it got swallowed, but much more often it just sorts of turns to nothingness over time. The health inspectors tend to turn a blind eye way up there. I guess they have better things to do.

Yggy my dear, that talk about cameras-for-school has really illustrated for me the difference between East & West coast universities. Out here on the right coast, expensive equipment is found at the school. Anxious parents of new students ask: what computer/camera/chainsaw/particle accelerator should we get for Dear Junior? And the answer is: None. Don't spend your money now. Our lab/library/studio has state of the art stuff for students to learn on. Save your $$$ to get the next-generation stuff Junior will want when he graduates.

Totally true. And it's not a public/private school thing either, cause the private schools around here supply your daggone pencils!!!

In any society most of the money will generally be where most of the laborers and consumers are. In addition, the North-East is where the pale-faces have ruled the longest, building wealth.

Out here in the western wilderness we enjoy more unspoiled nature -- in an agreeable tradeoff.

I see cameras were a recent discussion. I myself am a recent grad from art school, majored in photography. I own the 5d MKII, and love it dearly. Self proclaimed camera geek, and sold cameras during my college days at a big box electronic retailer (hint: Worst Purchase) So i am more than willing to help with any camera related stuff.

If not, than i will sit here in the corner, drinkings heavily, snapping pictures.

Actually, the school has a huge lending/renting library. Not sure about basic cameras, but super big ticket items, right up to HD movie cameras in the 100's K value, and two full on sound stages, even used in Hollywood movies at times.
But, the suggestion is to have this camera, for your own, so as not to find none when you go to borrow, or, that it's screwed up.
But yeah, your gig there does sound sweet.......and with the tuition here, dang.

CBC has a great ring to it, i could get used to it.
My school had what we called The Cage *dun dun dunnnnnn* where we could rent equipment, exactly as you described. Anything you could want from a basic camera, up to high end studio stuff. Something to take advantage of for sure, the gobs of $$$ you pay for the schooling, pays for that, so USE IT. Where else could i get access to Hasselblad cameras, i used one that was retail $30k+. Added that to my resume.

I am more than willing to offer help on understanding cameras. One thing to remember, the camera is only as good as the user (i hate when people say "wow what a great shot, you must have a nice camera", no one ever says "wow what a great novel, you must have an awesome pen"...)
Lenses are always a better investment/upgrade than a camera body.
So dont feel like you need to invest a lot upfront. It takes time to learn and understand how it works, and what style of photography they like. My first camera for school, a nikon d50, i sold 2 years later and bought a canon 5d.

Have to ring in with more backup to MDF about the school being the best start-up for any student
but West Coast schools
the ones where Lucas and Spielberg donate the use of their stuff and encourage new energy to begin
Almost dropped my personal passion study choice to take up on that
