1500 block of Plaza Lane, 9:27 p.m. Wednesday A man in a wheelchair appeared to be dead. Police responded and determined he was not -- nor was he in need of medical attention.

700 block of El Prado Road, 11:44 p.m. Wednesday A person requested a welfare check on a friend unable to sleep.

1500 block of Trousdale Drive, 3:29 a.m. Thursday A female at a medical facility appeared to be lying about her identity to get drugs.

1800 block of El Camino Real, 12:50 p.m. Thursday A man in a wheelchair appeared to need help. Police responded. He did not.

Sad. Last night I stopped by my P.O. Box on the way home. There I saw a man wandering aimlessly around the Post Office parking lot, barefoot. Obviously mentally ill. So far as I can tell, there is zero help available to him.

On a lighter note.... A typical police log entry in this town reads something like this:

"Officers responded to call for assistance at residence on 34th Ave. Woman claimed her nephew stole her television. Then her son beat the nephew with a piece of firewood, and the woman is fed up with having to raise her grand-baby. Officers looked thru the house for the welfare of the child and found a meth lab in the bath tub."

Now.... There is a newspaper police log so entertainingly written that people all over the country subscribe just to enjoy the police log. These logs have also been gathered and printed as books, which sell well. The newspaper is the Arcata Eye in Arcata, CA, and the wordsmith is Kevin Hoover. (*raises glass to Mr. Hoover*)

And the local Lake County Record Bee sometimes produces a pearl. A recent example: "...(the arsonist) appeared in court yesterday to tell a judge what he thought of the charges against him."

I just have visions of this poor man in the wheelchair wandering the streets of Burlingame looking for a place to have a nap.

Homelessness is a horrible thing, and a blot on the honor of our society.

also, it was some sort of comic relief after the horror of the elevator story.

As it is, it reminds me of a Norwegian phrase; "Good day man, axe handle". This comes from a fairytale where a chap is walking along a rural road and encounters a woodsman at work on a small piece of lumber. Unbeknownst to the traveler the woodsman is deaf, but has a pretty good idea that most wanderers first ask what he is making. But this pedestrian is just a tad different, and he simply greets the woodsman with a cheery "Good day, Man!" Whereupon the woodsman blurts out "Axe handle."

They arraign from the jail with a low quality video image, not an easy way to defend yourself.

I was presuming everyone had seen this ubiquitous pretense of allowing defendants the right to face accusers.
Presumed innocent is so laughable at this stage in american justice I won't pretend they even fake that any longer.

Her crime was picking too nice a neighborhood.

Regarding the Memphis squatter and her equally deranged accomplice, as reported in the abc24 story.... One of the most difficult challenges facing our society is establishing the line between criminally liable and mentally incompetent -- or if it should even be a line, or a spectrum.

Other complications of society may well have driven these people to such delusions and behavior, which suggests we have even deeper issues we ought to tend to.

Blah, blah, blah.

Funny thing is when I give a simple example of what seems clearly outrageous to me, someone calls it cryptic.
Exploring these complex issues deeper, which is necessary when you try to be specific, the same people call it too confusing.

Society has a great deal wrong with it, which people ignore until they face that almost unlimited power themselves.
People unable to see any other solutions, may be reacting in a way that does seem reasonable to them, or simply be desperate.
The average person doesn't even grasp how politics actually works, much less how rights are being stripped away.
Lack of access to the legal system has always been a big part of that.
Due process has never been available to all citizens.
The pretense that it is, is sickeningly deceptive.
Perhaps the reactions to a hypocritical society are desperate, but no less reasonable?

Even the clearest statement can be misunderstood.
You know you only have to ask, if I'm unclear enough.

I still hear people refer to the Jonestown Massacre as a suicide.

I do find the sovereign thing baffling though.
Don't ask me to explain that, anymore than the us public putting up with losing all property rights in the supreme court decision, and so on.

Not funny. It causes you frustration and it confuses your readers. What may seem simple to you; obviously outrages you, but the way you relate it to us is not in simple English. Sorry if I sound like I'm harshing on you, It's just part of the frustration and confusion I feel sometimes when encountering your comments. and to show you I mean no Ill will, and have no Ax to grind. I have found something you might Like; The Wiki Game. A game where one tries to connect two random Wikipedia topics in the least amount of clicks. Gyre, my friend, you bring up some good points and issues here. And frankly, I am not competent to analyze much of it. Maybe one item at the time.

Methinks there is a reason why society is so bedeviled with unfairness and dysfunction. It seems that human intelligence has evolved to such a stage of ability that we can invent very complicated affairs, but we have not yet evolved to where we can successfully manage such complicated affairs. (Albert Einstein is supposed to have originated this concept.) To this, of course, I can suggest no solution. I suspect we are not even competent to influence our own evolution.

So I am trying to accept that the world is imperfect. This is difficult, since I seem to be a perfectionist at heart -- no doubt I picked that up from my father, the well-meaning fool.

You used the phrase "unclear enough". No comment, which might border on cruel, except that politicians perhaps tend to live by this concept.

As for Jonestown, I would not be surprised to find that Jim Jones is living high on the hog in Argentina -- with David Koresh next door.

So, I'm guessing that that thread on the blatant fascism/groupthink of the mods is in quarantine. Unless, discussing that subject at even that level is forbidden and it's been yanked. I'm a little sad, because, well, it looked like such a lovely opportunity to beat up on someone... But I guess it also saves us some ugliness.

Anyway, I wanted to notice that thread's passing, because it had some meaning for me. Some small meaning. And it was kinda a shock to have it end that way. Shouldn't have been, but there's always that feeling that I've run off a cliff when something like that happens.
