Is 68 degrees warm? I can never remember what farenheit stuff means...

Sorry to hear about the stress... my day has actually been pretty wonderfully chill, which just means I'm not trying hard enough :) I'm here reading for another little while if you wanna share..

68 is decent. For my own tastes, I kinda like it upper 70's to mid 80's (what am I doing up here?)

Nothing I can really do about it, I just have to wait and see how things pan out.

Ah, sounds lovely.. up here we've been having weather that changes every 3-4 hours. Rain, overcast, sunny, rain, hail, sunny, snow.. (okay, that was up home in Williams Lake, which is in the middle of BC, Vancouver doesn't actually see much snow...)

I'm hoping to get in some outdoor hooping tonight that DOESN'T require a parka and gloves... yick.

Hey, random prep question: how much lamer would my first year experience be if I didn't have a bike to get around? I'm pondering going via Greyhound if I don't hook up with locals, and am thinking about packing stuff...

Ahh, the bike question. This one has many answers that would seem to contradict each other at times.

Pretty lame if you don't have a bike, you will be shunned.

You don't need a bike to ride an art car. If you have friends with rickshaws, you'll never need an artcar, either.

It sucks to get stuck way out past the temple and have to walk 2 miles back to camp.

Sometimes it's fun just to go ride waaaay out.

It sucks to have your bike stolen.

Shall I go on?

Personally, I bring several, so I have whichever one is appropriate to the situation.

Hm... can you define "a lot"? Aside from hiking to and from wherever our camp is situated.. are the other things-to-see-and-experience hugely far apart, or can you sorta amble in one area one day, set out to another area the next...? Or is it a half-hour hike between camps and installations?

I don't want to be shunned.. but I'm not going to be renting a vehicle to get myself there <sigh>

The city is just over two miles across, and there are art installations way out in deep playa you may not see if you have to walk. If you're bussing, you can bring a bike, and it doesn't have to be a full size multispeed to do well on the playa. Find a kids 20" at a thrift store, see if you can get the seatpost to come out far enough for you to be comfortable. If it's too short, take the old one to a bike shop to get one the same diameter in a longer length.

You won't be shunned. You might have to walk everywhere. BRC is a mile or more in diameter. So lots of walking. Probably easier for you to get a ride on an art car than it would for me if I was alone.

you won't get shunned,,,And there are camps jammed right together. Some are WAAAAY COOL, others are just people camping. You can meet a lot of people walking around.

But after a day or so exploring your neighborhood you will want to go further. Or after walking a while you want to go back to your camp to eat/nap etc. then continue on where you left off, then a bike is handy.

Kinda like downtown in a big city... some 'hoods are neat but a ways from the next one, so you have to cross the 'burbs.

My first year was without a bike. Though it was fantastic, I never saw 3/4 of the playa. Did get a couple of rides out to art, but there is soooo much. Recommend you hook up with a bike (good idea to lock it up though, some peeps like to 'borrow' more than they share).

I didn't have a bike either last year. I saw a lot, but never really got to explore the other side of the horseshoe. I probably walked at least 10 miles a day. My feet KILLED, but I had a couple really good foot massages. One guy even washed them off with whiskey first - that was all he had to get the dust off. I need to have a bike this year!

Howdy happy campers, Brewski time

X did my first year without a bike had frigging great time but I did not know what I was missing.
Now would not go without bike even if only for ice runs but I like to go out to Temple and Airport both of these really require a bike to make decent time.
Get an old beater well lubed with good rubber, blinkie lights, basket and a lock.

I'm still working out the details of the rickshaw thing, but I may have one for personal use the entire event. These are powered by two people so can move up to five total (two pedal, three ride). Can also be used to do major ice runs, recycling runs, and for taking a well-stocked bar to distant burns.

here are some links.
http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/Fi ... ist_05.htm

http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/05 ... ill_1.html

first one is last years theme camp location/addresses

next is their write-ups in the guide you will eventually receive

find a map on the website. then you can see where things are that interest you.

Then you can see you will be doing a lot of travelling.

People have met others, like passing ships in the night, and forgot where their bikes are though..........
