Interesting to see where Iceland falls on that map... They're the ones who said FU to the IMF a couple of years back and now their nation is in the clear and financially stable.Simon of the Playa wrote:http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2011/ ... ef=opinion

i dont see how it being true or not matters the least fuckin bit...
lets presume it is real... so someone doesnt identify with the movement? they are telling us... who fuckin cares?
lets presume it is not real....... it makes people think about whether or not to identify with the movement... they might not, who fuckin cares?
i think the fact that people in this movement are getting their panties in a bunch over this and even "enraged" (as the person in the linked to thing says) is indicative of how truly horrible and stupid the whole fuckin thing is ...
the truth of the letter isnt important: all it says, true or not, is that there are some people who dont identify with you.
NEWSFLASH: THERES PLENTY OF FUCKERS OUT THERE NOT WRITING LETTERS WHO DONT IDENTIFY WITH YOU.
hey, deal with the issues (this letter isnt one).. instead of being butthurt that not everyone is gonna join your movement.

in other words: dont shoot the messenger.
there are people out there (whether or not the letter writer is one of them or not) who some within the occupy movement may identify as a 99%'er ...but, these people do not and will not identify with this movement.. they have opinions and experiences that are very much like (or very much not like) the letter above....... and for whatever reason they dont identify with the occupy movement
discuss that.. ponder on that.. thats the issue, thats the problem, whether or not this letter came from a real person who experienced it in real life is of no importance..
the important thing is: how does the occupy movement deal with people who dont identify with their movement

Obviously you didn't read the link from the beginning to the end. He addresses your arguments (concerns? opinions?) much better than I ever could.
But to make it easy for you--the scenario expressed in that letter is TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE in this day and age; hence, the letter is as full of shit as the person who wrote it. I'll leave it up to you to figure out their motivation for writing it. Duh!

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
so movement decides scenerio is unlikely cuz someone says so in an eloquent way and the real issue remains?
edit: and yes i did read it all before posting.. it just solidifies what i basically said..
and that is the heart of the problem right there....... the movement and its proponents are offended that someone DARE not identify.

Whether Sally, who tells us that she’s not part of the 99, wants to be or not, she IS.

youre missing the point..
the math doesnt matter, it doesnt matter if theres anything factual at all in that letter... it doesnt matter if someone can prove every point is false using stats from the college tuiting board.
the problem is this:
until you can get assholes to stop deciding who SHOULD be involved.. well, youre gonna spin wheels going nowehre trying to find out who is actually on your side..

I think your point and the point the author (and I) hold are like ships passing in the dark; as what you say, unless I misunderstand it, has no relevance in this argument.lemur wrote:youre missing the point..

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
That debunking is so absolutely hilarious, and just proves the point that the author of the poster is NOT one of those typical moronic 99%ers. The debunker must be though!jkisha wrote:Fishy found this link and posted it on Facebook. I'm reposting it here for all of those that tried to defend this piece of shit sign and it's original poster.
http://persephonemagazine.com/2011/10/d ... e-student/
Hey I'll debunk that guy's debunk with one of my own:
- Housing and utilities? Hey great, Sally shopped around, and $4600/yr is about the same cost as staying at the dorms. That is well within budget of even those pitiful incomes the debunker assumed.
- Scholarships and grants? Certainly possible. 90%? Damn. I wish I had that, but I did pretty well myself. She didn't mention anything about grants either--free money that isn't for schooling. Those sure were great. I only paid for about 1.5 years of my undergraduate schooling out of pocket (through those generous student loans), the rest was through grants, scholarships, and being paid to work for professors (sans books). One scholarship paid for my entire first year. I have a mere $8000 of student loans that I can pay for immediately from what I've earned--during school.
- Years of schooling? The debunker assumes 4 years (perfectly reasonable, but not proving evidence). Nowhere on the poster does it show how many years that "Sally" was in school, and for what degrees. After undergraduate degrees you ought to be paid to go to school if you're under an advisor. Either that, or you have access to TA jobs that pay for your tuition in addition to an income. You can even TA as a student, getting paid, and getting a tuition waiver.
- Jobs and side-jobs. Nothing is mentioned on that poster about the abilities of this poster-writer. Why does this debunker think that all 99%er students are only relegated to skilless shit jobs? I guess that's the assumption of a 99%er. Some of us had/have skills outside what we learned in school and made money on the side. I had some healthy income from my side jobs. What about internships? I got some damn good money from one of those.
- Wireless phone? Unmentioned in the post. I don't even know why the debunker would include such an obviously stupid assumption. I didn't have a cell until about 2007--way after I started. Even then--even now--$100/year, or $400 over 4 years (thank you T-mobile!). A far cry from $2160 he cites. I could've had it from the year 2000 and it wouldn't have cost that much. Maybe the typical 99%er is a dumbshit who pays $40/month for wireless just to get a "free" iPhone.
- Health insurance? Who even buys that as a student? I didn't. What a waste of money that would've been. Health insurance steals money from you in the healthiest years of your life (consequently why students should be against universal wealth-distribution healthcare). I only had health insurance in some of my graduate years because it was free. I only started paying for that myself these past two years ($1400/year) because I do more traveling, and I'm actually regretting it.
- Bus pass and car? Where did the poster say anything about having to buy a bus pass to get to school? I've heard they're included at that university like at mine. Anyway, I've been to the University of Washington. It is a nice place to walk. Wow, a student who walks to school? IMAGINE THAT. Maybe the debunker is the kind of idiot I see on my campus who sits in his car idling waiting for someone to vacate a parking spot.
- Food: $200 a month for food? That's pretty high living for a student. I could eat on that going to the restaurants near the UofW campus each day. I'd estimate $100 or less a month, especially if the student is dedicated to eating at home, and the other people in the apartment are as well.
- Saving since age 17? Probably means she had a job and connections prior and during college. That's right, people who do something with themselves in their spare time? Building skillsets and not depending on the standard-fare degree to count for skills? It certainly says a lot huh?
But hey, we all know you're going to roll your eyes because obviously Sally can't be a true Scotsman--I mean 99%er--because she didn't show her face right?

Well you know, it is hard to see who identifies with whom through the strawmen. After all, all that matters is that the person did not show her face, or that some silly finances debunk proves the message is false through math.lemur wrote:until you can get assholes to stop deciding who SHOULD be involved.. well, youre gonna spin wheels going nowehre trying to find out who is actually on your side..Whether Sally, who tells us that she’s not part of the 99, wants to be or not, she IS.

People are missing the point that the 99% is symbolic, not actual. Fact is that they are probably less than 1% in the streets right now. Doesn't matter. If it reaches even 10% in the streets, you can bet that politicians will be mighty nervous shitting their pants about when to leave office and run for the hills. This movement is an emotional reaction to years of BS generated by politicians and when it's time to pay up with the consequences of those actions they cry "lets be reasonable". Not gonna happen. It's only a matter of time before every country falls. There has never been a permanent state in anyone's history.

Re: OCCUPYWALLSTREET REINFORCEMENTS!
I got rid of cable tv years ago and this is a growing trend because of youtube, etc. So corporate leaders have been trying to figure out ways to curb internet access and to curb net neutrality through various bills such as an internet kill switch:
