have any of you seen Body World ?

We just opened the Body Worlds exhibit at the museum, it was weird walking through the shop and seeing a naked gymnast with out her skin on doing a routine on a balance beam,... The Germans touched up the bodies as they came out if the creates. We got our free walk through on Friday before it opened to the public. I still don’t know how I feel about it, anatomy is kind of interesting but it does still feel a little like a cleaned up freak show. Kind of like when they took David what’s his name the Elephant Man from the side show to put him on display as a medical oddity.

cadavers? well yes and no, the bodies where of people who donated them to science for the process and show and some of the original material must still be there but the plastination process replaces the tissue with different kinds of plastic.

PLASTINATION: A technique of tissue preservation invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in Heidelberg, Germany in 1978. In this process, water and lipids in biological tissues are replaced by polymers. The results are a dry, odorless and preserved specimen.

The process requires four main steps

Fixation - Involves the specimen to be fixed in a 10% formaldehyde solution, this stablises the tissue and prevents autolysis. Specimens can also be dissected and blood vessels injected with a coloured medium to highlight desired structures.
Dehydration - Biological specimens have a high water content which must be removed for plastination. This is achieved by a process known as Freeze Substitution where the specimens are placed into a cold -25°C solvent such as acetone. Then, over a period of 4-5 weeks the tissue water is slowly replaced by the acetone.
Forced Impregnation - The dehydrated specimens are submerged into the liquid polymer and placed under vacuum, hense the term Forced Impregnation. The vacuum draws out the acetone from the specimen, leaving the polymer in its place.
Hardening - Next, the polymer filled specimen is placed into a sealed chamber where it comes into contact with a curing gas. This gas hardens the polymer making the specimen dry to touch in about 48 hours. Curing is complete after several months.

yeah that's how I would describe it, and the presentation of the bodies is really pretty good about remaining clinical enough to maintain some respectability , many of the bodies are in dynamic posses that show off particular muscle groups and such but there is only so many ways you can dissect a body and its still creepy.

I don’t know about Immortality either, I guess I don’t place much of my identity in my physical form (maybe because I’m an over weight bald out of shape 50 year old guy ) Not that I’m apposed to leaving a body behind but to me the immortality of a Tutankhamun

is far superior to being an anonymous plastic cadaver

I wonder what the best form of preservation would be to preserve tattoos , freeze drying works, the “Ice man” had tattoos that can still be seen so did some of the ancient bodies recovered in Mongolia and the Russian steps . I think a few of the bog people bodies from England also had tattoos. But I don’t know if any of them had different colors.

It’s supposedly a science museum block buster that breaks all attendance records ,.. we’ll see I just don’t get it,.. I’ve got to hope it does well, my job might depend on it,.. being the institution is gamboling so heavily on it

I can’t help but think it has something to do with the other venues the show has been at though who ever decided on going for it wanting to feel like a real world class museum by the company we keep.

( I wonder if I felt compelled to talk about this because I called in sick on Thursday and went home early on Friday,.. some sort of work ethic guilt)

though it does prod the discussion of art as a means of immortality as apposed to preservation
