Yeah you heard right. I was born about 70% deaf. By the grace of the Gods I get by. What I do is about 30% hearing, 30% lip reading and 40% guesswork.

Never learned ASL. So you can teach me some. My hearing is getting worse.

Sure thang.... I did a year of night school, and then a year and a half of full-time college learning ASL and studying Deaf Culture (program included general linguistics and cultural anthropology, too).. and then got tendonitus in both wrists so bad that I was wearing braces 24/7 and crying at night 'cause I couldn't sleep 'cause they hurt so bad, so.. no interpreter work for me.. but that was over 10 years back, so I've lost TONS of vocab...

One of the sections of night school, I remember having a classmate who had something degenerative happening in his ears, so he was learning to prepare for eventually being deaf... smart to be planning, rather than denying..

.. but, even aside from ASL's normal function, its also GREAT for bars and clubs to chat with your friends without having to yell "WHAAAT?" over and over :) You prob function better at clubs than most, hm?

"guesswork".. yeah, when I was trying to chat with my instructors, and they were talking with each other, I'd prob catch about 60% of the content, and the rest would all be educated guessing from the context :)

Actually no. It's worse. But do-able. I never had hearing aids until I was 30. And then, beacause my hearing takes a dip right in the range of human speach, the hearing aids made it worse. They only worked for me in small groups.

Ah, another Vancouverite, or are you just visiting this fair city?

Box - that range is brutal! You get all the noise, but none of the useful content! Ah well... we'll get you signing.. and train Bar Campers to be lip-reading aware :)

I’ll probably let my mustache grow extra long,
It will help promote the idea I come up with intelligent things to say at least with one person, I’m sure you can deduce better things than I can come up with.

Funny thing is; I don't actually lip read. Go figure. But if I can see people when they are talking it takes out some of the guesswork. You know, I never heard a cat purr until about two years ago.

And in spite of all of that would you believe that used to play bass in a rock band?

My old Sunday night haunt was the Odyssey - gay bar, with a drag show on Sundays from around 10-11, then dancing after...

I think Celebrities (also a mostly gay bar) and Shine (a mixed but gay-enough-for-me bar) also have good Sunday night action.. don't know any other places to recommend, though..

I spent 5 years working in a cabinet shop working with a bunch of guys from Paraguay with Ukrainian backgrounds most of the time they spoke Ukrainian, the funny thing was I could understand them all a lot better when all the machines were roaring and you couldn’t hear what they were saying.

I know that I use a fair bit of lipreading skills, for talking while working in an incredibly noisy environment (swimming pool, medium-bad acoustics, through summer with 400 screaming daycamp kids.. but I was also teaching the staff ASL signs to use along with our regular vocab of pool signals :)

Ooh, and I used to use signing to help save my voice.. teaching swim lessons for 4 hours a day, 5 days a week through the summer, PLUS yelling during the busy swims before and after, would toast my voice.. signing would help that, and also actually get the kids to focus on me more.. they'd have little competitions to see who could correctly interpret my signs first :)

sounds good - I always enjoy a good gay bar (not gay myself) but always like visiting new places. Tug boats are pretty boring, once I clear the docks, and begin my journey south. i set auto pilot and watch a movie, and surf the internet on one of my screens. Always like the vancouver route - but its kinda boring at night. Cruise ship traffic is picking up today though so have to watch out for them.

thanks for the tips. we are going to the "red room" this evening apaprently. then who knows.
come down if your bored I will buy you a drink.

Thanks for the invite, but I'm currently procrastinating on (from? about?) my task for this evening, making pants to wear at my hooping gig tomorrow at the Children's Festival... got a custom t-shirt made today, though: bright red tank top, with "HOOP STAR" on the front and a row of five stars across the back, in fuzzy gold iron-ons... :)

Oh, Box... how did that bass playing go? Got any pics of you as a hard rocker? :)

just looking at your beads. Must take forever to make - I tried working glass in school, just ended up burning the crap out of my fingers as hot glass looks remarkebly like cool glass! gave that up for steel, wood.

Kids love signing. My wife tried to get me to learn it. My kids liked it tho. It is easy to make a game of it with kids.

box - saw that video it kicks ass, must have neem a hell of a ride for those guys!

Our company works in emergency management and various support services to government agencies. The US Gov and canucks, and Brits are concluding a major air / sea battle excercie just west of Vancouver island. We were towing targets for the exocet missile portion of it. and have recovery gear on board. If you live in vancouver come on down I can show you the boat.

I got ditched and am not making it out tonight.

I was thinking about a mega sized Margarita machine for BM, We have these glass vessels in our shop for making wine or meth? - 2-1/2 feet in diameter with tapered bottom, stainless cooling coil and closed top with little stainles door. Holds about 40 gallons. Was thinking of making mega sized margaritas, keeping it cool with a cooling coil, and making it slef serve?

Okay, when you're towing targets.. don't you get, uhm, nervous??

I just did the deed, called my mom... AFTER my dad called me to ask if I remembered to call her today... I told him that I remembered HIM calling me a couple years ago to remind me to call her, which isn't quite the same thing... SHE said that she and another mom hung out for the day and commiserated about how their children don't celebrate commercial holidays :)

STILL not doing the sewing job I'm supposed to be working on, though.. oops :)
