The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them....To tell deliberate lies while
genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back
from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one
denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word
one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie
always one leap ahead of the truth.

Within modern developmental psychology, two classic dilemmas persist.
The first is the problematic relationship between learning and
development. The second is the equally problematic relationship between
individual and societal development.

The first dilemma may be provisionally formulated as follows.

"The central question for our purposes is whether learning is identical to
development or, at least, whether development can be conceptualized as
consisting of some kind of accumulation of units of learning." (Baltes,
Reese & Nesselroade 1977, 208.)

Another way of putting the problem is found in the work of Ann L. Brown.
For her, development is essentially the process of going from the
specific and context-bound to the general and context-free.

"Basically, the problem is how does the learner go from specific learned
experiences to the formulation of a general rule that can be applied to
multiple settings. (...) How does the learner come to use knowledge
flexibly? How do isolated skills become connected together, extended and
generalized?" (Brown 1982, 107.)

"Qualia", singular "quale", from the Latin for "what sort" or "what kind," is
a term used in philosophy to describe the subjective qualityof conscious experience.

late 3rd–early 2nd millennium b.c.

The hero's muscular body is human except for the bird talons that replace the hands and feet. He is represented twice, once on each side of the ax,
and consequently appears to have two heads. On one side, he grasps the boar by the belly and on the other, by the tusks. The posture of the boar
is contorted so that its bristly back forms the shape of the blade. With his other talon, the bird-headed hero grasps the winged dragon by the neck.
The dragon, probably originating in Mesopotamia or Iran, is represented with folded wings, a feline body, and the talons of a bird of prey.

There is a kind of disease suffered only by presenters on television, a version of St Vitus dance. They are seized by it the moment they appear.
It is like convulsions, officer, but it goes with a voice. The hands make jerky movements, the chest heaves forward, the whole body buckles. The
head lurches towards camera and the mouth opens to such a grotesque extent that you can see the tonsils dancing somewhere at the back of the
throat. That is disturbing enough for persons of delicate sensibility such as myself. But then the voice. It cannot speak a sentence without exploding
at least twice, with words like FANTASTIC! STUPENDOUS! JUST LOOK AT THAT! BRILLIANT! No, it doesn't matter what order the words come out or
what the subject is. It is an earnest of enthusiasm.
