Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor....thanks Isotopia.

I don't have time or the patience to be an admin, but someone needs to do simple cleanup so the admins can work on enhancements like the plonk button. That's all I want to do, and I don't want to do it alone. But if no one else will, I'm willing to give my time to the cause.

To reiterate. It's to moderate ONLY. No admin role, no booting people, no censoring, just advising people you might want to post that over here, maybe move something where it gets more visibility, and help the new people take advantage of our knowledge for their first burn in 2004.

Anything else bites into my mountain bike and kayaking time. Those take a back seat to nobody. Also...I asked the admins to make it provisional for a while so if anyone has complaints, they can say it's not working and off I go. Hopefully that will put the concerns to rest a bit.

May I butt in with a few semi-informed observations?

Being a moderator on an active board, even in a very limited capacity, is surprisingly challenging. Even if moderators here are not called upon to enforce terms of service and herd discussions along, they'll still have quite a job on their hands.

When they are wearing "the mod hat", moderators MUST not be emotionally involved in any way with the decisions they make. Moderators must be completely reasoned and dispassionate and technical to a fault. One cannot be impulsive and be a moderator. In the grand scheme of things, I guess it's a pretty piddly job -- say, compared to Alan Greenspan's -- but it requires a head so cool that you could keep a side of meat in it for a month.

I know...and that's why if people don't like the idea of me doing it, then I hope they step forward. What we all want is for this place to be cleaned up and having a team or more to cover things would be a start.

K, if I may speak freely, I don't see you as a moderator. I am glad you're here, and I've greatly enjoyed your enthusiasm and spirit. I just suspect that you're a wee bit too quick to react to make a solid moderator -- at least you are now. It is a learned skill. (I have moderated a couple of now-defunct boards, and I know of what I speak, I think.)

If the eplaya mods, if ever there are any, are only called upon to put discussions in their right place, I'll concur with isotopia and say you'd probably be fine. As far as more delicate matters go, I'm not so sure.

If you're intersted on how to do it right, take a gander at http://www.iidb.org . It's an atheist/secular activist board. Even if the content of the discussions isn't interesting to you, the moderation over there is the best I've seen. I've always taken cues from the Infidels; they do a damn good job.

Clandy, both you and Isotopia have given me some good stuff to look at. It's not like there's a school for this stuff, you have to learn it.

Also last time I checked this was a community....not a monopoly and the admins have taken a hands off approach. That needs to stay pretty much intact or it will kill the board and we all know this is not an ordinary board. I don't see other boards with avatars like PJ's, or such a wide cast of characters. No matter who steps into it, it will always be a work in progress just like BM itself.

Again to address the concerns, that's why I proposed the provisional part. Nobody will hesitate to speak up if I make a mistake. So if I go the wrong way, the admins would know fast and I'd be history. I expected similar comments so I tried to think of ways to give whomever gets the slot, should it open up a learning curve yet give the admins an out...it's all been given a lot of thought. But you have to admit...it is getting kinda crazy in here.

Now back to Google for those torque specs I needed....

As it stands now, I'm hardly "Here" anymore either.

Yeah, I think I PMed you over thattaway, and asked if you were the RebA! from the eplaya. No response -- I figured that you were an ordinary infidel, coincidentally named, minding her own business, who had no fucking idea what I was babbling about.

Hey, it doesn't have to be one or the other. You can protect yourself and still not hurt others. And not hurting others is not a weakness, but being too accomodating will eventually eat you alive.

I'm glad this thread has calmed down. It was a stressful thread to see my brother get ripped apart by.

Am I supposed to have a reaction to it? I love the colors...and she seems nice. End of story?

FWIW, I apologized to Alchemy....as I did step out of line. I constantly learn things on here, and I'm not afraid to admit I screw up alot. But you can't push the limits if you don't take chances. So I toss out my comments...and see what happens. So far...so good.
