I heard that BLM (Burning Lives Matter) will be protesting about vehicle passes, Serpa rights, & the new Zorb policy & blocking Gate road on Sunday & Monday causing an estimated 80 mile back-up. So don't even bother arriving until Tuesday.

God I fucking hoping so. I'm so over LEDs, and I'm somebody who does LED art. They have become so cheap that they are now everywhere and on everything. I think every bicycle I saw had about 50. One night I had the nerve to leave my camp with only 5 LEDs on my person and somebody came up to me and asked "Is this your first burn? Why aren't you lit up?" I was like "uh, no, this is my 11th, and I'm wearing enough light to be visible from a mile away."

I'm a big fan of light art in general, but I think that the majority of LED pieces in use on the playa are just way too bright. Is it unfair to call it narcissistic lighting?

I can totally see where it comes from, in the days before LED's were affordable your options were either insanely dim, or insanely power hungry. At a time when any kind of intelligent LED lighting was first becoming available, it was still ridiculously expensive (and so rarely seen), and even EL-wire was something of a luxurious item. Color and animation were achieved through multiple strands and specialty controllers, and greater care had to be taken in order to keep the lighting wire strands from breaking.

As LED lighting first started to become more affordable, it was generally a lot dimmer. But advances in both tech and manufacturing have resulted in lights that are super cheap, and much brighter than most people used to have access to. This year I saw pre-fab bike light kits that were as bright (or in some cases brighter) than a lot of art installations and mutant vehicles.

When those lights are used well, and maybe have diffusers or are part of a well-made lighting scheme... AWESOME! But more often than not, they're blasting and blinking away at the brightest possible level and with nothing diffusing the light. It makes for stuff that can be seen halfway across the playa.

On one hand, I was going "wow there are so many colors and lights out there" on the very first night after the gates... but that novelty soon wore off and I was wishing at times that there was a little less light pollution.

Back to the subject of rumors (and of course, mod hat off), I heard that the BLM doesn't want to be outdone by Nevada's 9% entertainment tax and is planning to introduce their own pork tax. It remains to be seen whether this will amount to a tax on bacon, or a per-officer fee to be charged to Pershing county.
