Not sure if it's narcissism or paranoia. Most recent musical listen was my latest mix. It's in the bag and posted for the world, but I'm still checking for glaring fuckups.

Non-musically, I've listening to some oddball give testimony/interview to project camelot in the background. Pani's never seen any of the interviews, and had me pop in one of the DVD's...

I was sorting and reorganizing my cassette tape collection last night. I still have about 200 cassettes. Even though the sound quality isn't the greatest, it's still pretty damn good. There's no way I'd ever thrown them away.

Of course I was listening to some of them whilst sorting and reorganizing ("Hmmm... Let's see... OK, Genesis should go in this case with the other English prog rockers... and Power Station goes over here with the 80's music... and... huh? Who does Tom Waits go with? Damn you Tom Waits, you've fucked up my whole system!") Anyway, some of the gems I was listening to last night were:

The Replacements: Don't Tell a Soul
Eurythmics: Revenge
Nazareth: Hair of the Dog
Neil Young: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

All you guys that don't want your cassette tapes anymore, keep on giving them to thrift stores, and I'll keep on buying them. I love it when I find a gem in something like a giant tub of old cassettes, it usually goes something like this: "Look! Skynrd's Street Survivors, with the original flames cover! For a dollar! Fuck yeah!" The way I figure it, I'll gladly put up with a little tape hiss to get some new music for $1.
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

I love my old cassettes.

I'm listening to sprinklers, robins, aspen leaves, a tractor every 10 minutes as it rounds the hay field and flying insects as they make a wrong turn into my front room, a harley off in the distance. ...and my fingers on my keyboard.
blow.

You can get studio quality cassettes very reasonable from the people that make them for mass production.
You might want to stock up, if you use them.
I always prefer analog audio formats.
I have found BASF high end 30 cents to a dollar each.

Wow! People who still love cassettes. Power to you. It took me over ten years (after) to cozy up to CDs, but I have. Even if you prefer tape and or vinyl you should back things up on CD (as in, "my player ate my tape").

I'm listening to Stevie Nicks as I write. Her voice lifts me every time I hear it. After 30 years on the music scene she is still #1 in my eyes (and ears). I love her like no other. DL "Beautiful Child" if you don't know it (by Fleetwood Mac, BTW). Her vocals are amazing in it.

I like going in mom n pops record stores and finding gems. Like the one at the foot of K St. in Sac.

Peace, all. Mikey

PS: Music is the greatest form of art, imho. I'm biased. I'm a songwriter.

Analog to digital always degrades sound quality.
I use hifi videotape for recording music if I need a duplicate.
Vinyl will last forever if you don't damage it.
I have records a hundred years old with great sound quality.
Cassettes fail when and if they bind.
Videotape is highly stressed due to the rotating heads.
Some reel to reel tape has held up for fifty years, though it isn't something to bet on.
I recently got new Maxell broadcast svhs tapes for $2 each.
Last year's race car.

Right now, Lou Reed.....

You know, that women never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes
And that, you know, children are the only ones who blush
And that life is just to die
But anyone who ever had a heart
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who's ever played a part
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and hate it
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane, sweet Jane ......

Here I Go Again...

Post by Mad Mikey » Sat Jul 12, 2008 5:43 pm

Here I go opening my mouth when I should probably keep it shut. I'm no expert on technical things, but I keep my eyes and ears open. It has been said for years that digital repros of analog musical works degrades, what, the high ends? I believe it to be true. The thing is, if you are listening to popular music (rock 'n' roll, hip-hop, country) it is going to be near impossible for most people to detect the difference. I mean, 1/2 the people you know say, "Huh?", when you ask them something. How are they gonna detect degradation in "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me" by CC in digital format?

It is up to the individual. Most people don't want to bother with things, and CD is easier these days. I use vinyl, tape and digital. Shit, most of the time I'm listening to tunes alone it's in MP3 which totally sucks for quality, but I don't notice it. The music I own is very important to me. I back everything up one way or another. We all should if it matters to us.

The hills are alive with the sound of music. Bullshit! Around here the hills are alive with crackling embers. At least the smoke in the valley is less today. The dogs are even outside.
Maybe you see the red balloon, but all I see is the coming monsoon.

I can easily hear the digital artifacts in cds.
Most people can if they have heard enough analog.
The higher rate of scanning in digital studio equipment is not so bad.
I don't have a problem with digital for video.

FM

Post by Mad Mikey » Sun Jul 13, 2008 1:03 am

It's amazing how many FM vids are available at YouTube. I've gotten over 200 from YouTube of them. Dating back to the 70's when Stevie was the rock 'n' roll Goddess in more peoples' eyes than just my own. Love it. I am a little aware of the band's roots and former members and some of their blues music. I did not know these songs you offer links to vids for. Thanks. I think they have found Peter Green somewhere in England, BTW.

It's nice to see a fan of theirs here. Mick & John have held up as the backbone of the band.

I have an odd question to ask. Not really odd, I guess. Have you ever seen the current members play in concert? I am asking because I have since 1979, and for years just before they would come on stage the same song would be playing over the sound-system. I have always loved the song and have wondered if it is one of their old songs. It's a very moody, dark, instrumental song that I would love to find and have. The last time they played it before their show that I know of was 1982's Us Festival. In 1987 and since I have not heard it when I've seen them. Boo hoo.

I can't actually remember if I've ever seen the later Fleetwood Mac play.
I've met Clapton and Mayall, of course, and I probably met Mick and John. at one point or another.
Someone on one of the music forums is bound to know what the song is.
I don't think I ever worked on one of their shows.

Thank you for the tip to ask on a proper forum. It truly is a long-time wanted song of mine. I have met Mick, Lindsay and Stevie briefly. You would think I might have asked one of them. But nooooooooooooooooo!

Also, from all I have heard of the band's 1970's shenanigans, they and everyone around them was pretty toasted from 1975 to the end of the decade. So it is wholly possible you were there for EVERY show and have no recollection of it.

I should have included this. I am listening to the breeze rustle the leaves on the big maple tree outside my window. Also, a mockingbird nearby who thinks 1:30am is a great time for showing off every night around here, which is totally interfering with hearing myself think.

I love these folks, the Hobogoblins.
Very satirical, they are to blues what the Grateful Dead were to country music.
Songs range from traditional blues to goblin drinking songs.
I never heard accordion, trombone, violin and tuba combined before.
A really annoyed dj called them a psychedelic hoedown.
Most of the stuff online doesn't do them enough credit.
I don't know if their new cd is on samples.

It's a band you have to see live to experience.
They encourage audience participation.

Third Week In the Chelsea

Post by gyre » Sun Jul 13, 2008 4:12 am

Sometimes I feel like I am leaving life behind
My hands are moving faster than the movement of my mind
Thoughts and generations of my dreams are yet unborn
I hope that I will find them 'fore my moving gets too worn
If only I could live to see the dawning of the dawn

So we go on moving trying to make this image real
Straining every nerve not knowing what we really feel
Straining every nerve ending and everybody sees
That what they read in the Rolling Stone has really come to be
And trying to avoid a taste of that reality

On an early New York mornin' a mirror in the hall
Showed to me a face I didn't know at all
Lines were drawn around a pair of eyes that opened wide
When I looked into the mouth there was nothing left inside
So I walked into the little room and whistled like a sigh

As dawn light closed around me my head was still in gear
Thinking thoughts of playing more and singing loud and clear
Trying to reach a friend somewhere and make that person smile
Maybe pull myself away from that old lonesome mile
That often comes to haunt me in the morning

All my friends keep telling me that it would be a shame
To break up such a grand success and tear apart a name
But all I know is what I feel whenever I'm not playin'
Emptiness ain't where it's at and neither's feeling pain

Well now what is going to happen now is anybody's guess
If I can't spend my time with love I guess I need a rest
Time is getting late now and the sun is getting low
My body's getting tired of carryin' another's load
And sunshine's waiting for me a little further down the road

The Homogoblins

Post by Mad Mikey » Sun Jul 13, 2008 10:33 pm

Hey, Gyre, looking at The Goblins they remind me of the movie A Mighty Wind. If you have seen the movie, are there any similarities in the music? I was not anxious to see the flick, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. If someone asks if I like musicals my inclination is to say no, but some of the best films are musical in nature.

In a related topic, was the film On The Bus ever released? The last I knew it was postponed and I have not heard anything since.

I haven't seen Mighty Wind, but I don't think so.
They do straight versions of things like St James Infirmary, the original one.
I first saw them in a play where they made half mocking comments about what was going on in the songs.
That may have been written in, but I doubt you could have stopped them from doing it if it wasn't.
They have some great drinking songs and want the audience to join in
I think the band was formed with the idea of involving the audience.

Are you talking about this On the Bus about burning man?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330720/
I'm not familiar.

If anyone is interested in being in an mtv series about the music business, $5 Cover is casting this week in Memphis, open call.
Craig brewer is doing it.
He is supposed to have creative control, so it may be fun.

Mocking bird. When I lived in Santa Monica this bad ass mocking bird would sit right outside my window and sing through the night. The best part is that he mocked so many different sounds but the ones that kept me up laughing were when he'd go into his car alarm series. he'd go through the whole thing. hilarious.

leaves and birds here too.

A village in UK had a blackbird move in recently.
Very loud and he did cellphones, sirens, car alarms and other city sounds.
There is a video.
I can't believe it all came out of that bird.
