Re: The Car Thread
My first car was a 69 vw bug. It was a total pos.
The only way a 4 door even looks good is if is pre 1953.
Any chevy can be turned into a convertible fairly easily, as long as there was a convertible available in the same model line. The Buick im building started life as a 2 door coupe. A suitable rag top was sourced, and the conversion was done. You absolutely cannot tell it didn't roll off the line as a factory convertible.

Re: The Car Thread
We did exactly that to a '57 Eldorado. When I'm at my computer I'll post some photos.
Not to generally disagree, but just to mention a few rare exceptions - the '60s suicide door Continentals, especially the convertibles, were cool 4-doors.
Trucks maybe shouldn't be included in this discussion but I like 4-door "crew cabs" especially on a duallie.
I've seen people get away with building pretty cool 4-doors but they must be hardtops and not post sedans, although in all those cases it would still be better without those rear doors.

Re: The Car Thread
First cars
Bought it in 1979 for $300.
1967 Impala, straight six, three on the tree broke and a previous owner cut a hole in the floor for a shifter that sometimes jammed.
No back seat so I put in plywood covered with orange carpet.
Was hit one time while parked by a drunk - barely bent the rear bumper but his car had to be towed.
Ahh stories...

Re: The Car Thread
To be absolutely technical about it, my first car was a '69 Impala, bought for $300 in late '77. 327 Turbo-Fire with automatic. Always had a problem of one sort or the other that was one step ahead of us. So it was constantly under a wrench, which is why I don't count it as my first car 'cause I didn't get to drive it much.Joeln wrote:First cars

Dad was driving through a questionable part of town one night after a gig, turned a corner and the damn thing completely died. No idea why, just not one sign of life in the fucker. He walked over to a bar, called a 'we buy junk cars' number, and drank the money they gave him.
We bought the Mustang shortly after.

Trying to figure out some designs for the 58. The one on the left is going on the trunk, the one on the right goes on the good. Both designs will be done in two colors, Aztec yellow and off white.
Still need some ideas for the quarters and fenders....

Oh, and captain you are totally right about the continental. The baddest 4 door ever!
Pre war 4 door posts are cool. But yes, sedans are better if you go with the extra set of emergency exits!

I love impalas. In my parallel fantasy life, I will own one of each year, from 58-76. 1970, is a great looking car, and the 1976 glass house is the epitome of a 70's lowrider.Tin Halo wrote:To be absolutely technical about it, my first car was a '69 Impala, bought for $300 in late '77. 327 Turbo-Fire with automatic. Hmmmm.....glad I'm not the only one who bought their first car for $300. Mine was a VW squareback, a '67 Type III (air-cooled engine, no radiator). Continue, all...........

Re: The Car Thread
My first was a '71 Pontiac T-37 doorpost sedan (a pretty rare car, essentially the cheapest version of a Tempest/LeMans) with a Chevy 250 six cylinder and a three-speed, originally a 3-on-the-tree but it had a Hurst floor shifter.
My friend bought it "because it already had mag wheels and paint". They were Keystones, and it was a nice blue.
But he wrecked it, crashed it in the front. I bought it for $200 but his dad wanted another $200 because he'd just put tires and a clutch in it. So it was $400. I drove it crashed for a while. We called it The Nuclear Stack Mobile. ("Stacking" was our word for crashing, as in "He stacked it into a wall")
One day I walked into a local wrecking yard and there was a complete front clip sitting there, a 1970 GTO front clip, nose hood valance and fenders. The absolute coolest front end you could put on that car. I think I paid $400 for it. That front end is rare and valuable today, all of it is '70 GTO-only, different from Tempest/LeMans, but I put it on that POS T-37. It was gold and the car was blue, so one day - actually overnight in the garage immediately after running from the cops - I decided all one color of grey primer looked better than mismatched parts.
I managed to go to jail with that car, lose my license twice, and get in all sorts of trouble. I'm glad I didn't start with a real GTO!
I meant to keep it forever,so that someday, like now perhaps, I'd still have my first car and could restore it. It would be a pretty cool car if properly put together. I did keep it a long time but it was really a piece of shit, and it was just lying around outside for years. I finally got rid of it.

Re: The Car Thread
52 chevy , had a blitz beer sign painted on the back , and a orgy scene on the roof ,the front bumpers were striped. The doors were welded shut, and there was no starter. So you had to push it ,and jump thru the window ,and dump the clutch to go. It had a 235 six that wouldnt die , the trunk ,and hood were held down with wire, and once the hood flew up at 60 mph, and broke the windshield a bit. Got it from a Hippy for 5.00
also I was 15 ,and no permit so I never parked it at home ,and just used for the weekends

Re: The Car Thread

This was in Norway.
One day I drove too fast on a bumpy dirt road and bottomed out, damaging the crank-case and the exhaust, causing leaks from both. The oil went on the ground, but the exhaust seemed to come right inside. So I drove home with my head out the window, stopping frequently to add oil.
Swapped in a junkyard engine.
I hung out with some road-racing guys, and I served as flagger at a track in Sweden. When the track was not in use, we would sneak our own cars out there. One day I rolled the DAF. We never figured out whether the swing-axle rear suspension folded under first, or if the wheel-hub broke first. But the car dug in and tumbled into the air like a rag doll, witnesses told me. I remember watching the back window pop out. When it stopped, I walked out where the windshield had been.
The track manager was less-than-pleased with the gouges I made in his track surface.
I sold the wreckage to a local junk dealer and took the steering wheel with me home as a souvenir.

My first car was a 53 Crown Vic. Anniversary model. Most of our cars cost $25 but this one may have been $50. It had bling and was a beauty. Then I had some year two-tone buick with fake holes in the front quarter panels, a 3/4 ton GMC pick-up, the 65 mustang and all VW after that.

Holy shit.
When we moved into this house, I would occasionally find little things here and there left by the previous tenants. One of them was a piece of 16 ga steel, with a design very much like one of these, painted on it. I have never been able to figure out what the hell it was...until now.

The designs on the left is supposed to be a Mexican gangster. Like from the early 1900's.
It's not my creation. Apparently it's been around for years, and many other pinheads have changed/modified it. I got it from my instructor when I started striping years ago.

Ratty, Buick had portholes on the front fenders for much of the 50's. Prior to the fenders they were on the lower corners of the good. It's been a Buick "trademark" for a long time.
