Just dropped in out of curiousity, we are 12 posts into this page, and the page counter still seems to be working correctly. I think I will add a post, drink a beer, add a post, drink a beer, .... just to see where the page screws up.

Post 13 was still good, and if I were to place a bet, I would think that number 14 will be fine also, but number 15 will do the trick.

Now for the moment of truth, 14 worked fine, but I am betting that this one will encounter the bug and screw up the counter.

I guess it is a good thing that I did not bet the farm, here goes number 16 with 15 still working fine.

No I think you hit it with 15 because now the no posts exist for this topic page number is there.

here is your beer.

That was a bingo. IF by chance anyone is looking into this bug, post 1 through 15 on a page come through fine, post number 16 is the one that breaks the bar. I guess that makes sense since there are 30 posts per page, it screws up as soon as it is past half way. This sounds like a common round-off error, but not having access to the code, that is just my guess. Anyway, my curiousity has been satisfied.

You were right Stargeezer. But as the poster of the 15th post you do not notice it. The 15th post makes the no posts exist page appear. I was wthcing as you ran your posts.

Very interesting, post 15 appeared clean to me, but my next post there was no doubt. I hope this does not mean I have to give back one of the beers I drank!!

Nope. We do not serve used beer at the Bar.

the peep who posts the 15th post cannot tell. But that is the one that is pushing th blank posts over the counter. So the next poerson who either posts or tries to log into the thread gets the no posts error.

I think I have an idea as to what might be the cause of the problem. Every time you open a reply box I think that it creates an index. the actual index point is not set until you save the post. But if you change your mind and go back or otherwise leave the thread it leaves a floating point waiting to be set and continuaslly being pushed ahead of posts that are being completed. Eventually the spill over becomes big enought to create a new page in which there are no existing topics.

As long as it is not used beer, can I have another.

So as far as the bug goes, am I correct in assuming that all of the necessary data is available, but there is no time or interest to fix it. Times sure change. When I was programming, if there was a problem in my code, I did not sleep until I got it fixed. This must be code of someone that is no longer available for whatever reason and the support staff just does not want to dig.

Thanks much.

At least this has been an enjoyable way to spend the evening.

I would offer you a beer, but I have never looked into how you guys post those pictures. I will have to play with that sometime, just for grins sake.

Very enjoyable indeed. I am sneaking away from work to do this but it is a bit slow right now.

Sneaking away from work is always fun. With just a few more posts, we will have the page counter back working correctly, at least for a little while. I guess there is more than one way to solve the problem, maybe we need a rule that bar peeps cannot sign off if the page counter is incorrect. Any excuse to stay at the bar sounds good to me.

Does my above posted theory make any sence? I could just be blowing smoke you know. :D

Your theory is a good possibility, but if that were the case, I would think that all threads would have the problem. We would have to do more experimenting to confirm the problem, but my suspect is that there is a number conversion problem that deals with the total number of replies. It would be interesting to know when the problem occured, but I would suspect that it happened soon after post 65536 and there was an automatic number format change that introduced the round off error. In interger math, a division drops the remainder, but with floating point math you get a decimal fraction and anything over .5 gets rounded up when going back to an integer. That is why I expected the error at 15 posts as with 30 posts per page, 15/30 gives half a page, with integer math this would be ignored, but floating point it would add a page. Not seeing the code, this is just a guess.
