Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Afternoon All !!
Last day of a three day weekend. Took the dog for a walk to the Frisbee park a few blocks away. The dog ran around while I scrounged for aluminum cans. Found about a pound. They don't pay anything here like they do in California but in the end it's still a few dollars extra.
Lucky says it's snowing in Reno. Just been gloomy here in Dayton with occasional light rain/wet snow mix at about 40 degrees. Wish we had at least a pellet stove.
Hope everybody has a nice day

It's great having Elorrum here for a visit. She is out exploring Abilene today while I am stuck at work.
She will probably learn more things about Abilene than I have in the last 9 years!
Happy Monday!

Happy Monday back at ya, Sadie! Glad Elorrum is with ya. Before she departs, will you teach her the words from "Abilene"?sadie wrote:It's great having Elorrum here for a visit. She is out exploring Abilene today while I am stuck at work.

"Abilene, Abilene, prettiest town I ever seen....
Women there don't treat you mean in Abilene, Abilene......"
George Hamilton, Buck Owens, and Willie Nelson all had that as a hit at one time or another....
You could also give her the heads-up on Cross Plains. That's the birthplace of Robert E. Howard, the author and creator of 'Conan, the Barbarian'. The library there is THE repository for Howard's works. And no, Conan never did look like Ahhhnold.......though in the first movie they DID stay pretty close to the intent of the stories.
And, if she gets down towards Brownsville, clue her in on the final battle of the Civil War at Palmito Ranch. Fought three days after Lee surrendered at Appomattox, it was a Confederate victory.
In all of my experiences with the people of Texas and things Texan, I've found the people to be fiercely independent and charming. The rest of the country wants to know, though, why all of your oil wells are registered with.....the Railroad Commission, and why, in the tradition of the greatest oil well firefighter of all time, Texan "Red" Adair, you put out oil well fires with dynamite.........

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Well, tonight I find myself in Lubbock, Texas ...mom had a hair -raising emergency trip to the Heart Hospital over the weekend and I am here to help her settle in when she comes home tomorrow. Sadie, I've not had the pleasure of meeting Elorrum, but a West Texas welcome is available to her (and anyone else eplaya) that finds themselves up this way in the next week. Lubbock ain't interesting, gawd knows, but the hospitality can't be beat!

You don't need to crawl here. Wanna go cook chicken pot pies?
Yo, tin halo, the reason they use dynamite to put out oil well fires is that the size of the explosion robs the oil fire of its oxygen, and without oxygen it goes out. It works well, but there is a small problem of getting it close enough to do the job. Nowadays, they use a liquid nitrogen-filled recirculating pipe to place the explosives. "Red" Adair came up with that method in the Gassi Touil fire in the '60s. that fire was known as the 'Devil's Cigarette Lighter', shot flames 450' in the air, and burned up about 550 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. It made Crude Awakening look small; John Glenn was able to see it from space aboard the Mercury mission Friendship 7 That particular fire took only 550 pounds of dynamite to put out. Five months of setup time.
'Red' Adair had a reputation of having big brass balls that clanked when he walked after THAT job. A true American-style hero.

Good to see you back around here, moonrise!
Hoping things go well for you there.
Another 'missing person' is Box Burner...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Box Burner, wherever you are!
More weather coming into Arizona, and just as welcome as ever, unless it keeps us from being able to ride the trike when Elorrum gets here. Anxiously awaiting word on when that'll be. (secretly hoping there's another stop or two on the way, so the sun will be back by then...)
Meanwhile, a glass of wine is in order, since I can't eat anything. Lost a molar at the dentist's today, and the novocaine has finally worn off. It was a gold crown, (heavy, too,) and I get to keep that, at least. So, I guess all is not lost.

OK, you probably won't believe me but that is exactly the second idea I had originally typed, but thought it over and realized that I wasn't sure if the explosion would consume enough oxygen to kill the fire, so I deleted it.^Rhino! wrote:

I don't think it "consumes" it, so much as the expansion/concussion evacuates it, as in creates a momentary partial vacuum in an area around the actual blast.Tin Halo wrote:OK, you probably won't believe me but that is exactly the second idea I had originally typed, but thought it over and realized that I wasn't sure if the explosion would consume enough oxygen to kill the fire, so I deleted it.^Rhino! wrote:
