Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Hey all! Good to see so many familiar faces still here! Sorry I've been a non-event on this forum for quite a long time.
Trilo, thanks for the kind words. We were really thrilled to have our piece on display for 2.5 months. We figure it was seen by between 250 - 500k people either day or night. It sure beat having it stuffed into a storage container for 2 years! Here's a shot from Lightscape at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. We've offered the Temple as a plaza centerpiece once again. We'll see what happens! xxooxx

Edit to note: it's been too long and I can't recall what it takes to share an image here, so here is a direct link to it.

A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

very nice BBD! congrats!!
AntiM: yeah, I get what you say. I just like to throw out ideas and stuff.
Elorrum: I don't quite follow, can you elucidate, please?
Svenghouli is on tonight! I love it, old sci fi and horror films. most pre 1970, many still black and white film.
it's right after two hours of the 3 STooges! How much better does it get?

One of the best songs ever.
Ygmir, Just a Swiftian observation, nothing personal. I know you work to craft interesting and comfortable homes for your tenants, and have a flexibility that allows the contract to continue uninterrupted. Property management interests need to show growth and increased profit over time. That harvests the renter community relentlessly and those who can’t keep up, fall off into homelessness. The demand is high, so, no worries. Individual landlords ride the market up without complaint. That dynamic I experience from the tenant side and it is difficult to hear and know how many landlords view their tenants as a morally bereft, and lazy class, disrespectful of property, and then as roommates, all of the above, and a necessary evil in their homes. It’s very hard to accept. But it makes sense. How could you do that to somebody you saw as a peer? It’s easier to view them as failures of some kind, by their own fault. If they weren’t so stupid and worthless, they’d own their homes. How? If they have maybe a hundred bucks a week left over for all expenses after rent and work 60 hrs a week? What happens when they don’t have adequate health care, get sick and can’t work? What Losers! Renting used to be a regular way to live, and not the evidence of poor life decision making it seems to be now. When the number of hours that I have to literally work for my landlord increases every year, I do not feel like a valued customer. I’m seeing it more as a pimp/whore relationship. My two cents.

yes, I very much understand what you say. And from your perspective. I'd say it's complex, landlord/tenant dynamics, but that's simplification, really. For me, I'll refrain from generalizing either side, knowing humane are so very, variable.
So, I default to:"do my best, and do what I think is right", and hope the cards fall well for me.
They don't always.
I fight cynicism and generalizations, but being human, do see them as a constant.
there are plenty of targets, for finger pointing. Landlords, Tenants, and government/laws. It'd be nice to find a balance.

*waves*
Happy Monday!
Yeah, the landlord/tenant dynamic can be... complicated. I've had a few bad landlord experiences, but looking back I feel like most worked out well. I'm old and lived through stuff, plus lived in a bunch of towns, and it always feels the hardest when demand is bigger than supply, and when inflation is hitting hard. It seemed like the last few years we were in the bay areas were the worst, but talking to campmates in LA, Chicago, and even Arizona... I think it's been tough all over. I'm hopeful that supply catches up to demand, inflation settles down, and supply chain constraints ease up (it still boggles my mind we had to wait 2 months for a door).
All that said, the last few days have been crazypants busy with yardwork. Dirt and stone and irrigation systems, oh my! I've got half the stuff I'll need for my work table sorted out, but haven't yet gotten a chance to start building it (or taking pictures). Seems like every time I finish a thing, two more things get added to the list... tis the season, I guess.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
well, and being a landlord here in california, there are added stresses, owing to the state being very, very, tenant friendly, to the point landlords have to be very cautious of who they rent to, because if it goes bad, we can't just "evict" someone, it can take months, and in that time, no rent, and probable extra damages. Add to that fire insurance. Mine went from 2400 per year to 7300 this year. ugh. And Liability, we're even compelled, if we allow pets, to exclude certain breeds and cross breeds.
it can be a real mess...
well, dirt, is good clean work! refreshing, IMHO, to just dig and move and fill and water. all that stuff.
Two months for a door? Hhmm, I know many cabinet shops will make doors....

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Oh, there are tons. But the housing market is so insane right now that they have pretty much bought up all the capacity of anybody that does that kind of work. In our case, the door itself was less of an issue (we were just doing a standard garage entry fire door, nothing special), and more for the normally simple part of a custom sized jamb. Reading a local report recently, it's something like an 11-16 week wait for home builders to get something so simple as a garage door.
Anyways, my week's plans got waylaid by a sort of good news/heavy lifting news opportunity of sorts. At the weekly burner happy hour on Monday night, our regional contact said she'd heard from a generous donor who had an event in town recently, and was offering to Burning Man the chance to come get a bunch of supplies and materials. She and a friend had just gotten a vanload, and she said there was loads more if anyone could act quickly. "How quickly?" "They need to clear out their site by Wednesday." Fabrication Division to the rescue! As it happened the site was only a few miles from our house, and Gray Matter (our Sprinter van) is ready for action. Man, they were not kidding... loads of really good wood that they used for their event, good on them for reaching out in the hopes it can get upcycled into art or camp infrastructure.

Even with a couple teamsters, it took a couple hours to get the van loaded up. After unloading, I headed back for another. Originally the plan was to let them know if I could come back the following morning, but they were under pressure from the venue to vacate the site by 8pm, which meant go back now or many thousands of dollars worth of supplies would end up getting hauled away.

I'm coordinating with the regional and a couple people so far, hopefully they can save a few bucks on materials for their projects.

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
I'm glad to have had the opportunity. It's also working out as a way to meet some more of the local burner artists, and to reconnect with old friends I haven't seen since we all lived in different towns.
I finally got everything unloaded this morning. It was already well into the 80's here by 9am, so felt a little like unloading gear on the playa. Frequent breaks for hydration. I still have errands to run, otherwise it would have been beerdrate followed by jumping in the pool... that can come later. And fuck yeah, tonight is another First Friday shindig in the arts district. They bring in a gaggle of food trucks and set up several dozen artists and vendors to showcase their works and wares, galleries stay open late, and then plenty of happenings at the restaurants and bars in the 6-8 block district. The first couple we went to were small, but moderate turnout. Last month's was probably 10 times as many people and ridiculous fun well into the night.
It is a little bittersweet though... this weekend is the UnSCruz regional campout for Santa Cruz. We got tix in 2020, with its theme of Hindsight... and then as things in the world got weird they just rolled it back a year, and then another year. We love that event and really wanted to go, but the 10ish hour each way drive was just a little too far for a weekend campout. Pani's work has been a little crazy, so taking some time off to try and make it work just wasn't in the cards. I believe Killbuck and Nila are heading out to it, and I hope they have as much fun as we had when we went in 2019. Our new region does a campout in October that we're looking forward to, and we just heard something about a weekend shindig that they have at the same location in July that may be fun. Only an hour outside of town, I'm not sure if we can swing that one or not. Just knowing it exists and is nearby makes me feel good though, might be a thing to do next year. Have a great weekend!

sounds like you've not a nice network and group there in LV, Trilo. Good for you!
Curious: What made you decide to move there? Very different from the last space, just wondering. "None of your business" is a very valid and acceptable answer, too...

Re: Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Haha... I've always liked the town. I first started visiting in the late 80's and early 90's when I was in the computer industry (trade shows were often held there). Pani had also been to Las Vegas several times before we'd met, with a previous employer she'd built trade show booths. Answering the "what if we didn't have to live in the bay area" question that was always on the list. It ticks the boxes for within range of the playa, plus it's within range of Los Angeles and Arizona (where we've got some good campmate connections). I also like that since it's such a big crazy entertainment town, it's easy for campmates that live further afield to easily travel to.
Pani needed a bit more research to be sure. All her previous experience in town had been while working, and that was with all her waking hours spent in a convention center building a booth. We came out last summer in the middle of July so she could experience the peak of summer, and make sure it wasn't unbearable. She had previously lived in Tucson, plus we both put up with the heat of the playa, but a big decision requires big research... and it wasn't unbearable by a longshot. That and getting the chance for both of us to see the town outside work situations, we immediately dug it. Area15 is a bit of a burner Disneyland, plus the Container Park, Fergusons, the arts district, Chinatown, and all kinds of other things that probably don't make it into guide books just sort of clicked. To me the town is like Burning Man but in the default world. The main drag with all the resorts is like the Esplanade, and as you travel away from that you get to quieter streets and neighborhoods.

Powering up ECM. Happy Saturday. I am listening to The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack show, per usual, 9-noon. Broadcasting live from Foothill College on KFJC, streaming etc. Just listened to the theme from the Captain Satellite kids show, a real deep memory. https://kfjc.org/listen/
Getting out in the sun today, hopefully with hundreds of other community members also pissed off about awful representation on decisions of personal human property and privacy.

Glad you had a nice time at the Hof yg! I looked it up, and I'm guessing that the B2 was on its way from Missouri to the airshow this weekend in Fairfield (Travis AFB). Sounds like you spotted it in the wild!

Hi BVB!
Ah, that would make sense, as far as flight line. They must have been sight seeing, though, as they were pretty low it seemed.
yeah, the lunar eclipse should be a nice, thought early enough here i'd guess a little washed out by twilight?
I wish I'd have thought about it, and stayed up at the Hof for a couple of nights to see it from there. High elevation and no light pollution up there makes for some very nice stargazing.

Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Hi bar!
Going out to the playa this weekend for the black rock rendezvous, with a stewardship emphasis. Anyone else going?
Taking the big shade shelter. Good old North Pole Party Shade Shelter (NPPSS.)

Have fun, Elorrum! I've had great luck with the big SPPSS myself.

sounds like a good time, Elorrum! I hope it's all you hope for.
sounds like the weather should be nice.
HI Securicor! good to see ya.
I'm forming a concrete wall today, hoping to pour tomorrow and plaster Friday.... scheduled 2 weeks ago, of course it'd end up being the hottest days of the year, so far... And the additional challenge of it being at the base of a huge sequoia tree, with 6" dia roots, right where one wall goes....and we can't cut them all, fearing for the health of the tree, so have to form around them, leaving room for future growth and expansion so it won't lift or break the concrete at some point.
