Effective Online Communication
I wonder if there's some kind of visual cue on the new eplaya that tends to create hostile, territorial-aggressive type responses. Each posting is placed in its own little visual box separate from all others. Very unburner-like. Each post in its own cubicle.
It also tends to break up the flow of communication, instead of scrolling smoothly down the page the postings are kind of fenced in.

i dunno. i don't think it's the font or text boxes or colors. on my screen there are these words that appear from time to time that seem to cause the flare-ups.ramen wrote:I wonder if there's some kind of visual cue on the new eplaya that tends to create hostile, territorial-aggressive type responses.

I agree with antron that at the core it is people creating any hostile
posts you see, not technology. However i've definitely been finding that
my frustration with the overall thread hierarchy here rises noticeably
during any prolonged browsing of the forums. I now only read through
the threads in short spurts or i begin to feel snappy.

Aside from the philosophical symbolism i think you are definitely on
to something about the boxes and lines separating text. They seem to
make it more difficult for the eyes to track down the page.

Haven't checked email or lists since I've been back up here. Frankly, I wouldn't know how to explain the whole scene to anybody who wouldn't already know exactly what I was talking about. Jeesh.

BM Internet Radio Station
I think an official BM internet radio station would be an effective way for the burner community to keep in touch with what is going on. I'm in the midwest and its rare that I hear about anything. The only time I ever feel like I am a burner is when I'm on the playa.
Has Larry thought about setting up a BM Internet radio station.

Re: BM Internet Radio Station
Where are you at in the Midwest? There are several regional groups that you might be interested in that can give you a small taste of the BRC experience even when your miles away. I know that KC and Chicago have groups and there are others scattered about. Give us some details and we might be able to help you out.chengwahkuo wrote:I think an official BM internet radio station would be an effective way for the burner community to keep in touch with what is going on. As for the radio station, the org is pretty busy as is, my hunch is any radio type efforts would be better handled by us instead of the org. If one of us set something up they might adopt it as an unofficial home and make it the de-facto station of sorts. So if you like the idea, do some research into it and consider making it yourself. You get lots of valuable experiences and you are giving one hell of a gift to the burner community.
Beware of the RIAA though...everytime I find a good Internet Radio station, that ugly royalty rights monster shuts it down. The RIAA sucks.
I've found that the first step towards remedying a situation which you find needs changing or a niche that needs filling is to do it.I think an official BM internet radio station would be an effective way for the burner community to keep in touch with what is going on. So, when are you going to start on this project?

getting started...
I've never set up an internet radio station... i think i could do it but I dont think i could be on 24x7... anyone out there willing to be some on-air talent? i would hate to make something and have no listeners... do think that there would be listeners?
Re: BM Internet Radio Station
When in need of information, I never seek it from a broadcast medium. I can speed-read; I can't speed-listen-to-the-radio. For information I strongly prefer a book or a web site. I mostly use radio for entertainment purposes when performing a repetitive or time-consuming task that requires little thinking or analysis. (Fixing machine, radio is on. Designing machine, no music please. Flying cross-country in nice weather, CD player is on. Driving through a construction zone with fast nighttime bumper-to-bumper traffic, silence please.)chengwahkuo wrote:I think an official BM internet radio station would be an effective way for the burner community to keep in touch with what is going on. I"d love a BM radio station.
I'd vote for a BM radio station, I'd even do a shift or two if I could do them remotely....

I'm not a big radio fan, but i think a year-round burner-run newsletter
could be helpful. A "by the people for the people" kind of thing to
distribute information, publish opinion pieces, run burner/theme camp/art
piece profiles and stories of interest to our community.
Anyone know if something like this has been done before? Any blatent
reasons why something like that wouldn't work?

yep it's been done for a few years now. it's called the "burningman" website.
just funning. i just think that a few things need to be added to the burningman site and chengwahkuo has a point. out of all of the art that burningman has on it's site there is not an offical webcast/broadcast/radiostation.
especially with all the artists that like to listen to all types of music and burners that like to physically listen to internet radio. it would be nice to hear a burner radio.. i myself have a few internet radio stations i like to listen to like "the ministry of sound" run and owned by boy geroge.
burningman can be at the forefront in this field with all the awsome engineers and awsome artists and webdesigners surrounding them. it would be wise to take advantage of it a.s.a.p.

BR Radio
Last fall, Dusty Balls (anyone know where he's gone?) set up an internet broadcast of tapes from various playa radio broadcasts from past years. It was wonderful! Nothing quite like fixing dinner in your own kitchen while being reminded about porta potty etiquette and impending dust storms.
I don't know the current status of the project. That internet broadcast channel is no longer available though.

Not quite the "by the people for the people" sort of thing i was talking
about. The burning man website and jack rabbit speaks newsletter are
understandabley biased and don't necessarily represent everyone's
burning man experience.

Much of burning man is still run by volunteers. Have you considered
doing some research on what it would take to start this radio station
yourself?

girlie, i'm liking this idea. sort of a year round version of piss clear.
questions/problems i kind of have wrapping my brain around it are:
- how much editorial conntrol do you (or whoever publishes it) exercise?
- how do you go about getting a readership? advertise though jrs?
- in attempting to avoid the llc bias, would you necessarily introduce your own?
i think it's an idea worth pursuing. i'd even be willing to help out, i think. but i don't think i have the temprament, or lack of bias myself, to run it on my own effectively.

>> - how much editorial conntrol do you (or whoever publishes it) exercise?
There are standard editorial ethics that provide suitable guidelines for this
sort of thing. I'll do some more research on this. I would imagine that
the editor would need to have some measure of control, if only for quality
control issues.
>> - how do you go about getting a readership? advertise though jrs?
Advertise through JRS, the Regional Lists, print out copies to hand out at
events, etc. I imagine it would be more cost effective to initially just run
it online, and then move to print if there was a budget (or subscriber base)
for it.
>> - in attempting to avoid the llc bias, would you necessarily introduce your own?
I think journalistic ethics would cover this a little, but there'd definitely be
some risk of bias. It would depend upon who the editorial staff was.
>> i think it's an idea worth pursuing. i'd even be willing to help out
I've been brainstorming a lot lately about BMorg/burner communication
issues, and have had it in the back of my mind that i want to start some
sort of project this year with those issues in mind. I’m not a writer or an
editor, but i’m a good manager, and have faith that there are plenty of
skilled folks that could be brought on board for this. Let’s talk about it
some more. If anyone else is interested in discussing the potential of
this speak up – maybe we could get something going.

well chengwahkuo you may be right.
i understand what you mean. still text/journal seems all that most burners want. they dont want music i suppose. so maybe next year the idea will catch on or burningman will perfer to do it without me, but if you need info on how to do it or if and when you get something going and run into compications your welcome to ask info from me.
any platform. and just so you know which i'm talking about, pc, mac, sun and any software you decide to use.
anybody want to flame me that's ok. i'm just sendin info to those who want it and to whom has asked me.
in fact nothing to flame about.
