Hell, I don't know what all those lines, and little flags mean that they put out when you call them.
except 811 only locates public lines, they (here at least) won't locate anything past your meter and shut off, as far as water lines go.
I always call if there is any chance they'll locate. I just know, in this case their location would help not at all.
and I know where the propane line is, having put it in myself, and power is all over head.

found a truth about pvc glue, I had always been told, but never had a failure, till now: if the glue is like jelly, it does not hold........
fixed the breaks, let it sit the required time, and longer, returned pressure and blew two fitting apart. (80 psi water). So, no water tonight, gotta go get new glue and such, tomorrow.

good think there is cognac.......

I guess I could do the usual Bay Area thing, and accuse the southern California people of not knowing how to properly name a San Francisco edible, but I don't want to score those kind of points against Ratty.

Joeln, Sometimes I can't tell the difference between ham and turkey if there is a lot of other tasty stuff on the sandwich. In spanish turkey is juajalote. pronounced wa-ha-low-tay. Not to be confused with ah-woe-lee-ta, (grandma). Jamon is ham and pavo is turkey. I've never heard the word pavo before but I looked it up.

Yes and yes. All my first 25 years. I'm 62 so unless you are older than I would guess, our paths didn't cross. Maybe I went to school with your parents. I assume your parents grew up there because Pico Rivera is a nice place to leave.

You have a few years on me, I'm from the class of 77. My parents are from the east coast originally, dads from New York and my mom from Pennsylvania. They moved to PR in 1961 when I was around two...from Montebello.
I left PR in 1989 and haven't looked back, although I would like to see my old stompin grounds, south of Washington Blvd and between Passons Blvd and the San Gaberial River, which was always dry. Went to Rivera Elementry and Rivera Jr. High, kindergarten at Maizeland elementary.

Maybe the guy wasn't mistaking the turkey for ham, he was telling you he'd rather have a ham sammich over turkey?

Burros and burritos (the smaller lunch-sized siblings whose name became more popular) are a fun little concoction, with the weirdest fucking backstory to it. There are nebulous reports of them in the 19th century, then they kind of come into prominence in the early 20th century during the mexican revolution. A very little known influence on all that was, oddly enough, the Cornish Pasty. A pasty is pretty much the same deal, but with a pastry filling, that's been around for centuries on the other side of the Atlantic. Cornish miners who were coming over to bring advanced tech and run mines in Mexico in the early 19th century brought the dish... and let's face it, an easy to carry self-contained meal is pretty perfect for any jobsite, especially the ones below ground. From some BBC docu I'd seen a couple years back, over time the pasty evolved. Doing the british pastry dough was difficult with local resources, so instead a larger tortilla was used... a culinary legend was born.

Dammit, Bill, now I can't stop thinking about burritos! Oops, wrong thread. Burrito night will have to wait, we've still got a bit of leftover shepherds' pie, plus more of that ridiculously awesome corned beef. I've got fixins to do a nice dim sum night, but I'm holding off on that til we get further through the pub grub.

Today was a crazy struggle with technology, man am I glad I got it resolved. My sweet darling ordered a new laptop last week - it was due to arrive tomorrow but managed to get here early. I was able to clear the schedule to start getting it ready for her, installing all the stuff she wanted on it, transferring files from the old machine, that kinda stuff. Alas, there was a hiccup in one of the file transfers and the drive needed to be wiped and re-formatted in order to take care of the problem. Only problem with that is that it's a bleeding edge new design, and some of the drivers for the stuff inside it don't officially exist yet. D'oh! Man, talk about first world problems! Fortunately I was able to connect with a couple of the engineers who designed it, we determined the root cause and also a couple possible solutions that didn't require me taking it to an office. The hiccups are done, and now I'm babysitting the installation and configuration of all the stuff. Gotta make sure my sweetie's all good to go, of course!

Of course, no need to be sober while I babysit.... drinks all round!

Yum... You had to remind me of pasties. My great-grandmother was a Hungarian immigrant, initially living in the Michigan upper peninsula and related Wisconsin turf, so pasties were a standard one of her (and her daughter's) dishes. Mmmm, mmmm, good! Alas, I never got the original recipe (using real lard in the pie crust) from grandma before she passed away. I've been trying to reverse-engineer it, but not much luck; I guess I'll have to give in and ask my sister for the recipe. :P

I lived in Grass Valley for a couple years and there was a good pasty shop downtown. They brought in a lot of Cornish miners for the deep rock gold mines up there... @Ymgir - I imagine you have been to this joint.

yeah, Joeln........well depending, I know the owner of the original "King Richards" pasties, here. pre dating the shop you refer to.

well, water line held the night, so yay! not to attach the original drain connections I was going to work on, and backfill..........

When we moved to Utah in the 70s, there were two Mexican restaurants in Ogden. One was the fancy El Matador and the other was Taco Time. Both were wretched. I only knew about the Taco Time as a teen, the only burritos they served were deep fried. I am a Californian at heart, so that was freaking weird. El Matador is still around, my cousins decided to have a family meal there. Food was so salty I could not touch it.

When I moved to San Francisco, there was a grocery store which had a Mexican hot deli, and they took food stamps. I could make a fat foot long burrito for a buck, big enough for two meals.

@apavlin - Try this recipe on for size (it uses lard in the pastry) modify it as you see fit.

I can sympathize, AntiM. As a little kid in Michigan, all I knew of the cuisine was Taco Bell and that Ortega stuff in the supermarket. A little later on (around 12 or 13, I think), I lived in Dallas and we did a broke-ass summer vacation road trip down to a couple border towns in Mexico.... holy crap, what a difference. Even as a picky kid who only ate tacos and none of the fancier stuff, it was like a whole new world. Then later on, living back in the mid-west... it was gone. Chi-chi's was the closest I got to authentic for a lot of years, then finally I started coming out west for trade shows and business trips when I worked in the tech industry. I couldn't get over how vastly different it was in different areas, it didn't dawn on me for a few more years that they're a whole country with a lot of different regional styles and varieties of making stuff, just like the US (or any other country, for that matter). Even though I've got it pretty damned good here in SF, I still miss that tex mex style sometimes (everyone here skimps on the cheese hehe).

As a kid, my family would go to Kansas every few years to visit relatives. When my sisters and I were all in our teens we took our cousins across the tracks to the mexicatessen. That was the only place to get tortillas or anything else we needed. We taught them about tacos and burritos. Also how to dress like a hippy.
