Is it over?
So, who thinks Burning Man will never recover? I think the ship is taking on water and going down.

I am trying hard to stay optimistic. It's getting harder to do it.
If this virus is still around in January, it will continue to flair up.
How do you keep people and infrastructure together if 2021 doesn't happen?

BMORG is addressing the fact there may be no BlackRockCity in 2021.Captain Goddammit wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:59 amSo, who thinks Burning Man will never recover? I think the ship is taking on water and going down.
Today, Lollapalozza said probably not 'till 2022.
This fall, I need to move to a smaller warehouse space and thinking all BM stuff should be Marie Kondo-ized.
If there is TTITD in the future, I can do what I promised myself I'd never do: rent an RV... on the other hand, just the thought of it makes me think I'll never carry out that sacrilege.

Captain, I have been thinking the same thing. BMORG's rainy day fund will be gone, and gatherings of this sort are the most risky way to exposure yourself to covid. My neighbor doctor says 'three years' of this new way of life.
It may not be gone, but is sure will be different.

Re: Is it over?
I'm not sure I'd be all that upset to have been part of something so unique. And to have been there for the last year of TTITD after Larry had passed and had a chance to say thanks and goodbye is a good memory for me.
I wanna go back. I'd love to go back. But I'm old enough to know now that nothing last forever and that everything changes. And that's not such a bad thing really.
Heck, isn't that what burning man was really telling us year after year? Burn it down and build it new? It's the moment. Not the journey or the destination that really matters. It's where we're at now and the people around us that matter.
I'm really just trying to convince myself that covid is like a whiteout. Just hunkering down and waiting for it to pass!

I think the Org will go bankrupt, and no matter how out of touch with normal reality I think they all are, without the Org handling all the red tape and hassles involved with having such a large scale event, it just can’t happen.
That’s why I think it’s done.
I suppose eplaya will disappear too.

I wonder how long the burner culture and social circles will last, after Burning Man doesn’t exist.

I doubt they use bankruptcy as a tool unless they have long-term contracts or leases that need to get out of.Captain Goddammit wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:20 amI think the Org will go bankrupt, and no matter how out of touch with normal reality I think they all are, without the Org handling all the red tape and hassles involved with having such a large scale event, it just can’t happen.

Too much equity with Fly and other properties they own to risk that path.
The LLC can be pared down to the glitterati managing the few viable non-profits like BWB and the likes with a dozen or so folks left to survive on donations and whatnot.
Pretty sure they can all get day-jobs and work a skeleton operation on weekends for the foreseeable future of The Rona crisis.

Besides, I’m the same FKO I was in 2000, maybe even more so.

Over until there's an effective and affordable vaccine available in quantity.

Re: Is it over?
I sure hope not but I’m doubting it will re-appear. I wouldn’t be surprised if it morphs into another event in a different location. The BLM is creating headaches for BMP. They really need a reality check. Hopefully a couple of years without the revenue stream will open their eyes.
I think people need a getaway like this event to wind up to unwind.
Let’s hope for a vaccine by 2021.

Re: Is it over?
I don't know Captn. This will be a test of the BMORG's radical self-reliance. If they want to extend the length of time before cash runs out,. then relocate to a cheaper place to live and support. Talking the ORG itself.
Even if the full time staff fails it all, I think there are enough volunteers to man the helm, for nothing. It might be the best thing to happen to the BMORG.
I know I am looking at it optimistically. It certainly could go the way of the dodo. If it does, it will be due to dodo's. There are many ways to keep a non-profit afloat without cash.
Don't forget the state of Nevada will be missing a large cash infusion in that area. I think the businesses in the area missing that annual infusion of cash are going to be a noisy group.
Then again, I could be full of poo.

Get to the core of what's important? A boat, within a boat, within a boat, and a flying submarine. You'll survive. There are alot of great minds in your arsonal. Don't let them go down with the "Titanic." Have we learned nothing?

I don't see how a party that raises over $10 million in two hours during the Main Sale can't rebound from a year off... just gonna make 2021 that much more epic.
And society will stop pretending this virus is scary once we have vaccines...

- Resolved (D & R) 2,882,126
- Resolved Fatality Rate (Deaths/Resolved) 5.76%

- Expected Fatalities from Active (5.76% of 2,369,320) 136,472
- If no one else catches it (dream on), that's 302,664 expected Total Deaths - so far.
(Big Hint: when there's news, go find the scientific paper that's behind it to get what is really going on. 95% of Covid-19 related papers are not behind paywalls.)
With 5% of the world population, the U.S. has over 25% of the world's cases, which for the U.S., makes this the Trump Pandemic: economy decimated, permanent company closures, jobs gone, education seriously interrupted, looking at an upcoming 30 million becoming homeless, fewer with health care (more sickness & deaths), U.S. war ships affected, various supply shortages, profiteering, long term medical (hence financial, hence economic contribution) consequences to many Covid-19 survivors (including some male sterility), ...
Nothing scary there.
