What causes your BM flashbacks?

Post by ZaphodBurner » Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:31 am

Non-burner co-worker just randomly dropped his Oakenfold CD into our system. Suddenly it's a month ago.

Earlier today, I saw a vehicle in the ubercorporate parking lot covered with what looked like playa dust. As I passed, I saw that the INSIDE is covered with dust. Hmmm...

DEQed our playafied van on Tuesday and the technician who got behind the wheel smiled so broadly his eyes seem to almost tear up. Gave us a huge thumbs up from the driver's seat--we took it to mean we passed DEQ--but, like, why would a tech get so excited about that?

Then it occured to us...the dusty interior, the BM sticker on the window, the goggles hanging from the rearview mirror...the gas mask on the dashboard.

I've seen my wife burst into spontaneous, quiet laughter, do her little happydance at some random beat, some hideously flourescent object...I know part of her is still There. Does that happen to you?

I'm still carrying around my camel back and drinking from it at the office.

I spend a lot of time on the Eplaya and looking at Burning Man pictures!

Just put the big dome up again, for winter....Got all dusty! The last couple of winters, especially around the Playanox, I've gone out and slung the hammock, cracked a PBR and wished for a recording of the BMIR PSAs. (Sorry for all the acronyms, FWIW.)

Seeing the knowing gleam in the eye of the coworker I brought to Burning Man this year.

Last night I ran into a guy I know who I saw at BM this year. We both smiled wistfully and knowingly. Didn't really need to say much.
Friends ask "what's it like?", but you don't have to explain it to a fellow burner..........

Walking across the parking lot to my truck after work. Thinking "fuck it is hot today" then thinking "it was hotter than this on the playa, why am I so uncomfortable" then realizing "oh, yeah, it's all the clothing".

I put my dome up a couple of weeks ago and got playa paws again.....and so did my friend who helped me put it up but didn't attend. She said, "Were your hands like this the whole time you were there?" I said Yes.
Then I was watching Surface the other night and one of the kids on the show had a shirt on that said, "P is for PLAYA" (I taped it for proof) Made me grin! I'd like to know if it means Playa or player though and why they chose that shirt for the kid to wear.

In Cambridge, we have an infestation of cyclists. Many of them are students from all parts of Europe, with every culture's particular bad cycling habits represented. We also have a lot of pubs.

So we have students + unlit bicycles + alcohol...

Good Lord, now Burning Man reminds me of Cambridge.

I've seen those shirts at Urban Outfitters...WHOOPS- I mean, "I know someone who went into Urban Outfitters, and they saw those shirts." Yeah. That's what I meant. Playa means "beach", so I'm not 100% that they're Burn-inspired...but what are the odds?
I got playapaws putting up MY dome again, too....Considering how fast that dust attacks, it's amazing that we acclimate to marinating in it for a week or more!

I laugh when I go to Burning Man and people complain about the heat. Here we have that heat + the humidity. Burning Man is a weather vacation for me.

The smell of sweet sage and desert dust. Does it every time. That, and seeing any kind of BRC or BM sticker on a vehicle off playa. Like... well... you know.

Inflating the Walrus

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Fri Sep 30, 2005 9:42 pm

Sometimes I go into my garage and its like my own little decompression party. I tell myself I'm organizing but I just want to tweak and twiddle with el wire and give MiniMan a pedicure.

I get little flashes during my work day if somebody is ranting or being unreasonable and suddenly, briefly, I'm back at Burning Man where this conversation would be absurd because what they should really be worried about it inflating the walrus.

I like the ipod shuffle feature so songs can sneak up on me that remind me of the playa. I always like David Bowie even more after the burn.

Bike Ride

Post by griffin » Sat Oct 01, 2005 12:07 am

I'm going back to that first bike ride. Every year, the day we get there, we work on setting up all day, and when evening comes around, we put down our tools, and get on our bikes, and go see what else is out there. It's such a great feeling out on that first ride around the embryonic city (we get there the saturday before the event starts).

Hmmm... What triggers my BRC flashbacks? A Jiffy Lube sign. Using port-o-potties at night. When my neightbors play techno. Walking in our garage (where we store our GP medium). Any little random bit of strangeness that I come across, really...

OMG! Talk about burningman flash backs! Has anyone seen Barbarella a 1960's movie with Jane Fonda? It's soooo BM. The outfits, the set designs could be inside any art car, the space craft itself I pictured driving across the playa. I sware I even saw an exact art intialtion from last year in the back ground of one of the scenes. Plus it's a great movie. :D

Drummer girl " OMG! Talk about burningman flash backs! Has anyone seen Barbarella a 1960's movie with Jane Fonda? It's soooo BM."

The Mistress of the Galaxie [Jane] was quite beautiful before she became a buffalo farmer.
Another beautiful woman, Anjelica Huston plays the part of a very deadly swordfighter in the movie "Ice Pirates" It has a sequence of scenes with the characters scooting across a big empty "playa" in a VERY strange looking vehicle. It could easily have come from BM

It also has a robot who's much funnier than the robot in "Hitchiker"
It wasn't a great movie but it had it's moments.

My camper is still covered in dust.

I had a dream last night that I was working with the DPW, and staying in some weird bunkhouse on the playa....The playa itself was playa-patterned vinyl flooring, and we were all "skating" on the dusty vinyl in our socks. It looked like there was LOTS of good art, but of course that's when I woke up.

TV commercials

Post by playa_buddha » Mon Oct 10, 2005 7:45 pm

It seems like at least several times a week I"ll be watching TV and some commercial for cars or SUVs that was filmed on the playa (or at least a playa that looks like Black Rock) and I'll sigh and take a little mental trip back to my desert home.

that knitted scarf....one whiff and Im back. Ive kept a few things from the washbin, things like furry coats and scarves, just so I can go sniff it every few days.

and my pics are still in my digi cam....I still skim thru them on break at work.

Listening to the songs I had in my head that week.

Visiting with my playa friend who thankfullly only lives 4 hours away. :)
